Celebrating six of our favorite Local Guides memories

January 15th officially marks six years of the Local Guides program. We love that so many of you remembered this and are already celebrating this milestone on your own! To celebrate with all of you further on Connect, we wanted to take a moment to highlight some of our favorite moments over the past six years. Read on to join us in a walk down memory lane.

Launched the Local Guides program

Local Guides have been helping others in their communities and around the world find the places worth going and the things worth doing since 2015.

Hosted the first Local Guides Summit (now known as Connect Live)

In 2016, we launched the Local Guides Summit which has since evolved into Connect Live. While Connect Live 2020 wasn’t able to proceed as scheduled, we are so thankful for the memories of years past like these.

Improved the Map through Map Your World Week and other initiatives

Map your World Week took place in 2017 and many of you joined us on this journey. You also helped us map India’s hospitals and improve accessibility on the Map.

Introduced a revamped Local Guides Connect

Our forum and blog got a new look in 2018. Enhanced with a new design and additional features, we refreshed Connect and have continued to make improvements based on your valuable feedback. (Remember, you can always submit new ideas for Connect on the Idea Exchange!)

Traveled the world with Connect Live (and Santa)

In 2019, we took Connect Live on the road and traveled to different locations around the globe including Tokyo and Hyderabad. We also went on a journey with Santa himself where he stopped at places recommended by Local Guides like you on his famous trip around the world.

Adapted to change and recognized our Guiding Stars who led the way

2020 was a year unlike any other and we are so appreciative of the incredible Local Guides who stepped up to help their communities in 2020. We launched the Guiding Stars program to recognize the efforts of 50 Local Guides who made it their mission to make a difference in 2020. We continue to be inspired by them and all of you in the community who focus on making the world a better place, one review at a time.

And this year, we’re looking forward to evolving the program further and continuing to connect with you.

Whether you’re new to the program or you’ve been here with us since the beginning, we want to hear your favorite memories, too! Share your favorite memories from your experience in the Local Guides program in the comments below.

Thanks @TraciC for sharing these great moments in the Local Guides history.

For me a lot of the best memories have happened this year, thanks to virtual meetups I was able to meet other mexicans,we created TeamTacos and met our amazing LATAM friends.

In 2020 I reached level 10 on my birthday  and I was selected as a Guiding Star, it was a good year after all.

I'm really proud to be a local guide and I'm sure we are making a difference creating a map that is useful for everyone.  Happy birthday to the Local Guides program and Let's guide!!!

I have loved being involved in Local Guides @TraciC (I'm pretty sure you already know that lol) and the growth since the beginning has been tremendous. I certainly appreciate being able to attend each of the Connect Live and original Summit events and being featured as on of this year's Guiding Stars. Like everyone I think I started out in the points game but came to realise its not about me, its about my community, both my local one with its small businesses and globally with all the people I've come to know over the years. It is amazing being a Connect Moderator and I look forward to dropping in here to see what people have shared.

Thanks to the entire Local Guides team for everything you all do. I know for absolute certain that you all go above and beyond your Google roles and truly share in our community.

Happy birthday Local Guides!! I'm so grateful for this program, it's so good to everyone involved and even people that don't know it exists yet!

It's hard to select my favorite memories here, but first come to mind fun moments at meet-ups, then each moment of realization the program gave me about how much I enjoyed photography, how important accessibility is, as well as the many, many, things I have learned thanks to the program related to all sort of things the world has.

And of course the amazing people I have met thanks to this, I'm particularly grateful for the community this past year and the amount of Local Guides fun we could have virtually.

I can't wait for more fun moments together, continue learning, and guiding, and to see how the program will continue to develop and become better each time 🧡

Happy Birthday Local guide program. It had been an amazing last year despite of the pandemic. These online meetups  allowed us to interact with each other throughout the world and learned so much as to how we can improve our communities through this simple program. The traveling was restricted yet we enjoyed our virtual tours to different places. And all the praise goes to the Local Guides who are constantly participating in this program and improving the maps. So once again cheers to all the Local Guides and thumbs up 👍for the leader @TraciC .

Level 7

Dear @TraciC,  Thanks a lot for sharing. Happy guiding anniversary

@TraciC Thanks for sharing these. It has been quite a journey hasn't it. And looking back, the Local Guides program really did give an opportunity to many local people including myself to help make the world a better place by helping everyone discover new experiences. Our Local Guides meet up programs also worth a mention that grew from just small gatherings to update Maps to now big gatherings (both virtual and physical) to get to know people and lifelong friends from all over the world.

Special thanks to the Local Guides team who has worked so hard to make all these happen, and special thanks to all the incredible Local Guides that help make our world brighter.

Happy 6th birthday Local Guides program!

Happy Birthday 🎉 Local Guides program.

I am very proud to have been involved in the local guide program since its beginning. In these six years of the local guide program, I have so many memories from which to choose my favorite is the hardest thing for me. @TraciC

I remember when I was invited to the first Local Guide event (2016) held in Bangalore and the selection in the "Guiding Stars 2020" has been one of the most memorable moments for me.

@TraciC thank you for sharing these sweet memories. It is six years but feels like sixteen years already.

With the people, places and things we have shared together, Local Guide has made significant impact on the world. The fact that we are all volunteering to make Google Maps a useful tool for billions of people worldwide.

My Six Fav Memories:

Connect Live in Nigeria.

One of the most memorable event of my Local Guide experience was the pop up event in Abuja and Lagos. We had Traci visit Nigeria with other team members. I met some fellow Guides who I never knew previously.

Outstanding Accessibility Award

My first trip to Connect Live was in 2018 and I was surprised to receive an award for my contributions towards making maps for accessible.

One Accessibility Initiative

Beyond points and leveling-up, I discovered a passion and collaborated with other Local Guides who joined me to start this project to make maps more inclusive.

Accessible San Jose

Hosting an accessibility meet-up in San Jose was one of my favourite meet-ups. We saw real accessible features and improved our understanding.

Level 10 Challenge

I can't forget how reached Level 10. It was a challenge from Traci when she visited Nigeria. We agreed to make quality contributions and see who gets to Level 10 first before the end of 2018... 😊

Guiding Stars

And finally being named among the 50 Guiding Stars for 2020 was an icing on the cake for me.

It's been six years of scintillating memories. Thank you Local Guides team!!!

Happy birthday to all of my global friends.

I'm so glad that joined the Local Guides program in its first months and have this opportunity to follow your amazing stories on the Local Guides Connect.

I think the "Map your world" week is necessary every year.

In my opinion, another important milestone of the LG program was encouraged to create local communities, which started with official support and then discontinued but this background idea that Local Guides can do even more good things by their local LG communities still remained and is very important.

Thanks to Google and thanks to you @TraciC for years of support.

Happy Anniversary @TraciC ?, 6 years wooow, what a beautiful journey!

I've joined Local Guides program in September 2016, so quite long and always loved the program and contributing. As you might know I was missing the community behind that till 2 years ago when joining at Connect Live 2019 and making some real friends, although I'm also a Connect member since 2016. I can see how the community grows, all the efforts, the passion and the love behind everyone and that's amazing.

This has been a very special year and looking forward to the continuously growing and evolving of the program and the community ❤️.

My favorite memory? I think you might guess it ?.

Thank you for everything and thank you to every single Local Guides part of this amazing huge family.

Hello @TraciC, your megaphone is certainly depicting a BIG announcement being made. Happy 6th birthday to the Local Guides program and hats off to everyone that contributed to making it what it is today. Over that time the program has evolved and I'm looking forward to seeing it continue to evolve, growing stronger and becoming better for everyone involved.

While I love writing Connect posts and through them sharing stories and photos of my travels to places in the world that only few will ever visit and experience like Greenland, Mt Everest and the Himalayas, by far my best memory for me in the Local Guides program is when, in the middle of a difficult COVID-19 year, when many of us were in lockdown or travel restricted and thus unable to get out there guiding (in one post I called this The year that the God forgot), I saw a way to engage with hundreds of Local Guides from across the globe and a way we could perhaps learn about as well as improve our photos contribution on Google Maps. This started with a post dedicated to looking at our most viewed photos which in turn led to a series of leaderboard type posts dedicated to photo views. I saw that these leaderboards could easily be filled up with the top Local Guides like @Herve_Andrieu and @TorM having extraordinary photo views, so I intentionally designed the leaderboards in a way to allow for and encourage participation of Local Guides at all levels, so everyone has a chance of being on the leaderboards and being featured along with the top guns. This strategy has worked well. These posts show that when it comes to our photos contribution, quality wins over quantity and interestingly, they also show that some Local Guides at lower levels, like @FlyingTimo (Level 7), @DFX (Level 8), @TGP13 (Level 3), @Blad3101 (Level 6) and @MamenPerera (Level 5), were demonstrating exemplary photo views performances, and some like @anil696 (Level 8), @katydarhel (Level 6) and @Rk2010 (Level 8), just to mention a few, were in some ways out performing many at higher Local Guide levels, including myself!!!  Oh what a lesson I learnt there!

Caption: An image showing the multi-tiered structure of the Top 100 Photo Views Leaderboards ( @AdamGT )

These leaderboard posts have encouraged engagement between hundreds of fellow Local Guides from all over the world and at a time when many of us were staring at walls in our COVID-19 bunkers.  Interestingly, they have also fleshed out many otherwise silent or Local Guides just lurking on Connect and, surprisingly, this is continuing to this day!  By far it is this engagement with my fellow Local Guides that has led to my most favorite moment that I have experienced in the Local Guides community. The feedback from participating Local Guides and comments like "Your posts motivate us and inspire us to improve our contributions" @FaridTDF says it all and has been very rewarding. Through all this, I too have been motivated and inspired.  Thank you to all the Local Guides that have and continue to participate in these leaderboards posts and thank you for all your positive and encouraging feedback. You've certainly helped me maintain my sanity while locked down in my COVID-19 bunker!

Hi @TraciC  and Happy Birthday to all Local Guides!

My best memory was to finally meet many Local Guides from all over the world during Connect Live 2018 and then meet others during the subsequent meetups! What can I say then, every time I enter Connect I am always eager to discover new places and taste (at least with my eyes) so many foods that I had never heard of!

Yes, I love this community and I am really happy to be part of it!

Thanks everyone,

 Уважаемые KlaudiyaG , Ivi_Ge ,  MashaPS ,  DeniGu , AngieYC ,  InaS , TsekoV ,  @ LilyanaZ , @ BorrisS , @ Giu_DiB и  Bobiisha

Happy 6th Anniversary LGs!!!

WOW! Six years... this is amazing! My journey here began in March 2020 and this is a continuous learning curve for me since then with all my LG friends here. Everybody had influenced me in one way or another, and I'm grateful for that.  It actually started with Anil Bhai and @TravellerG  sir. I learned a great deal on our WGS and IVM days. I am thankful to @Shrut19  tai for introducing to many of our Indian LG communities. I found some very close friends like @Ewaade_3A , who was also with me during my rough patch this year.  Accessibility champs @Tushar_Suradkar  and @Globe_trotter_Ish , a great photographer friend @Rohan10 , dear sister @RosyKohli, @NareshDarji  @jaisoncbe  _@MohanGhyar @sophie_menuse @BijohnAdams, @gurukrishnapriya mam... An enormous list of friends. Sorry  if I missed your names here!
It is worth mentioning that @C_T  sir, who guided me with the micro level analysis and great enthusiasm was a key person helping me improve my knowledge.

I am sure this year 2021, will be key for me to improve and learn more!
Thanks everyone! Keep guiding!!

WOW !!!

Wow!!!! Six years, So the Local Guides Program is just 38 years younger than me, Because I &  Local Guides Program's Birthday is on the Same date 15th January ❤??

Thank you @TraciC to let us recalling our beautiful memories with this wonderful program.

I m a contributor to Google maps since 2015 but joined the Local Guides Connect in May 2017. And my first post was an angry review for a pizza restaurant in Karachi because I thought maybe we can post reviews here too like Google Maps ?

My beautiful memories with this amazing program are all of my Local Guides Meet-ups, which I hosted or joined in different places, cities, and countries. Meeting new and old friends always gives me pleasure from the inside.

@OmerAli @IlankovanT @Haseeb @SwalayMuhammad

@Bilal_shaikh @AkmalB are some Local Guides friends whom I met in real life. But still, there are hundreds of other friends on my wish list, whom I eagerly want to meet. @JaneBurunina @ermest @KarenVChin are

Alexander Campbell, Jesi, Paul,  Adrian, Ravindu, Kasun, and many other great friends, there is a huge list of them.

And the best memory I had in my mind is not so old, but just some months ago when I got Colourful Badge on Connect, yes that was the best day of my life, when I cried by joy and happiness.

I have not too much words, but I can only say Thank you Local Guides Program, you changed my life.

My favourite memory from the Local Guide program was when @KarenVChin and I worked on a video during Summit '16 for our fellow guides who didn't get to make it to the summit. It was a fun side project and enjoyed collaborating with everyone to make it.

Bonus favourite moment: Getting the news that @OSAMA got to attend Connect Live.

This is my first time writing here , I don’t really know how this space works well , but congratulations not only the official  winners , but ,to all the google local guides out there that we make the efforts  to go out and about (even with a global pandemic as we are living on right now), with or cameras trying to show the world how  places really look like, on real life  , (without filters or tricky pictures )..to keep it  100% real ..and show the world what they really will  see when they get there via google maps , keep it Real its my absolutely goal!.

Happy 6th anniversary 🎊🎉🎊👏🎉! Proud to be a part of this community!

The  year is already started under curfew , all of the European almost lockdown, tourist not traveling as before . I from a little village who's name bayahibe in the East Coast of the Dominican Republic it's a touristic village , we live depends of the tourist if there is no tourist the village is dead, things are going so bad those years.

I can't explain them.

Even though I am not a guide from the beginning, I can imagine how amazing it is to be a guide from the beginning. In the last two months, I had too many great and unforgettable experiences as a Local guide and a Connect member. I met lots of amazing people, shared thoughts, knowledge, and goals. You guys who are from the beginning are really lucky. Thank you @TraciC for sharing an amazing article as usual so we can know the history.

Cheers,
