Take the Challenge: Ditch Plastic Spoons at Restaurants! 🍽️🚫

Hey Local Guides! Let’s make a small change with a big impact. Every time you eat out or order food online, make a conscious choice to say NO to plastic spoons. Here’s why:

:cross_mark: Why Avoid Plastic Spoons?

  • :stop_sign: Melts in Hot Food – Ever noticed how plastic spoons bend or deform with hot food? That’s toxic microplastics mixing with your meal!

  • :warning: Health Hazard – Plastic fibers might leak into your food and enter your body, increasing the risk of serious health issues like cancer. :skull_and_crossbones:

  • :globe_showing_asia_australia: Pollution Problem – Single-use plastic cutlery takes hundreds of years to decompose, harming our oceans and wildlife.

:white_check_mark: Better Alternatives:

  • :spoon: Stainless Steel Spoons – Always ask for reusable cutlery at restaurants.

  • :leaf_fluttering_in_wind: Compostable & Biodegradable Cutlery – Made from sugarcane bagasse, bamboo, or wood, these decompose naturally without polluting the planet.

  • :backpack: Carry Your Own – Keep a foldable spoon & fork in your bag, purse of your wife/girlfriend, scooty, or car for an easy, eco-friendly alternative!

:package: Ordering Online? Make a Difference Too!
Many food delivery apps like Zomato, Swiggy, Zepto, etc., now offer an option to decline plastic cutlery when placing an order. Always opt out and support sustainable initiatives!

:light_bulb: What About Restaurants That Don’t Support This Yet?
Right now, we’re challenging only the use of plastic spoons/cutlery because we know food outlets might not easily support this movement. But you can play your part by explaining the alternatives to them.

Yes, biodegradable cutlery is slightly costlier, but adding just ₹5 extra to each dish can cover these costs! Customers won’t oppose it when they know it’s for a great cause. In fact, food outlets can use this in their marketing to show they care about sustainability! :seedling:

:bullseye: Join the 30-Day #NoPlasticSpoons Challenge!
For the next 30 days, ditch plastic spoons whenever you eat out or order in.
:date: : Extended for more 30 days till May 31, 2025.

Great initiative, @KetanChhaniyara. I always look for the sustainable options for plastic spoons, even on the flight, trains, or buses. During long train travel, particularly, I carry my own cutlery, mostly reusable.

I will definitely add my participation next time I visit or even order anything.

Cheers!

I wholeheartedly echo your sentiments, @KetanChhaniyara! Plastic has evolved from a mere commodity to a professionally orchestrated menace, posing a significant threat to our nation. :globe_showing_americas:

I’m consumed by this issue 24/7/365, and it’s alarming to see plastic infiltrate every aspect of our daily lives:

✦ Overhead water tanks
✦ RO storage tanks
✦ Vegetable cutter boards
✦ Bubble top water cans
✦ Kitchen storage containers
✦ Carry bags

The list goes on! I’m grateful that there are still conscious individuals like you who are speaking out against this slow poison. Let’s continue to raise awareness and work towards a plastic-free India!

Hello, dear @KetanChhaniyara,
Here are two photos:

Homemade Idli, Sambar, and Coconut Chutney—all in re-usable vessels; of course, the spoon and fork are made of wood only.

Even this tiffin box with its cover is received from Google as a gift; all these are made out of recycled material and are re-usable also.
Hope these shots will match your expectations… right?
I enjoyed your challenge, dear friend.
Thanks…

This is a great initiative @KetanChhaniyara
Unfortunately I can’t join because in my area this is already a change made by law, and probably helped my province to be featured by the EU Community with the European Green Leaf Award 2025 for the small cities: Treviso 2025 - European Commission

Thank you @ErmesT for your kind words and for recognizing our efforts.

It’s truly commendable that Treviso has implemented laws to reduce single-use plastics, earning the European Green Leaf Award 2025.

Developing countries still have a long way to go in raising awareness about environmental sustainability.

Your support and initiatives, such as the Earth Day 2025 Worldwide Meet-up and the 7th Anniversary of #LocalGuidesCleanTheWorld, are truly inspiring.
