Sustainability becomes truly powerful when it moves beyond intention and turns into everyday action. In this interview, Ketan Chhaniyara shares how simple, thoughtful choices—both on Google Maps and beyond—can create meaningful environmental impact. Through community-driven initiatives and consistent advocacy, his journey highlights how Local Guides can lead by example and inspire planet-friendly behavior at scale. ![]()
Here are his responses to a few questions on sustainability — in his own words.
[Q]: Why do you support sustainability?
[R]: I support sustainability because it’s about creating a better future for all of us. Simple choices—like reducing plastic, conserving resources, or encouraging eco-friendly alternatives—make a real difference when multiplied by millions of people. I believe that as Local Guides, we have the power to influence decisions and inspire others to adopt sustainable practices.

[Q]: Please mention your contributions on Google Maps related to sustainability.
[R]: On Google Maps, I regularly highlight whether restaurants and cafes use biodegradable or plastic-free cutlery, packaging, and straws. My reviews always include recommendations for adopting sustainable practices such as switching to wooden/eatable spoons, cloth table napkins, or eco-friendly packaging. This way, my contributions help others make informed, planet-friendly choices while dining out or ordering food. Recently, I appealed to fellow Local Guides to observe and appreciate small eco-friendly actions around us, support responsible businesses, and use our collective voice to Bag the Change.
[Q]: Please share your contributions related to sustainability beyond Maps.
[R]: Beyond Maps, I actively promote the idea of “ditch plastic spoons.” I organized a challenge on Local Guides Connect where I encouraged the use of eatable spoons as an alternative to single-use plastic. To spread awareness, I sent eatable spoon hampers to the Top 10 entries, and many shared their stories and appreciation online. I also continue to recommend biodegradable cutlery in my restaurant reviews and everyday conversations like carrying our own non-plastic bags for shopping, making sustainability a natural part of my lifestyle.
[Q]: What is the impact of your contributions (on Maps and beyond Maps)?
[R]:
Special Update: Based on my efforts, one of my restaurant reviews was featured in @Julie_A’s post “Help others choose sustainability with Google Maps” in the section “Add sustainability details to your reviews.” It was an incredible moment to see our work highlighted! You can read my original post here: Take the Challenge: Ditch Plastic Spoons at Restaurants.
As part of my initiative, I provided eatable spoons hampers to top participants, and their responses created a ripple effect of awareness:
- Rahul Nath: Friendship Day – Gift with a Purpose
- K K Sharma: Supporting SDGs with Eatable Cutlery
- Rajashree Parmar: Honoured in Top 12 of the Challenge + Insta Post & Story
- Siddharth: Highly Motivating Experience
- Supriya Devkar: Unique & Innovative Gift
- Ajit Thite: Most Innovative Gift Ever
- Isha: Insta Story
- Shifa Aymal: Insta Story + A Gift for Me and the Planet
- Merlin Thomas: Edible Spoons Received
My sustainability-focused reviews and initiatives have sparked conversations, inspired fellow Local Guides, and influenced restaurants to think more responsibly about their choices. Even if one restaurant switches to biodegradable cutlery after feedback, it reduces tons of plastic waste over time.
Thank you, Mr. Ketan Chhaniyara, for using your Local Guides voice to inspire planet-friendly choices and meaningful change.
