šŸŒ Local Guides Lead the Way: Highlights from the #NoPlasticSpoons Challenge šŸ„„

Dear Eco heroes of the map - this one’s for you! :world_map::seedling:

I’m filled with gratitude as I look back on our ā€œDitch Plastic Spoons at Restaurantsā€ challenge. We had 35+ amazing entries, and narrowing them down to a top 10 was genuinely tough - not because the others weren’t great, but because every contribution was uniquely inspiring.

:sports_medal: Top 10 Entries - Extended to Top 12 : Leading the Way in Sustainability

Selecting just 10 entries from 35+ inspiring submissions was truly challenging. So, I expanded the list to a Top 12, based on complete challenge compliance and exceptional creativity.

These entries (not in any particular order) stood out for their creativity, impact, and clear alignment with our challenge goals:

  1. @Ssiddharth2000 – Posted about biodegradable cutlery being adopted in eateries.

  2. @Rahul001 – Discovered Chai Kaari, a women-led tea & idli spot in Trivandrum using wooden spoons, steel cups, and banana-leaf servings—highlighting eco-friendly charm in every sip.

  3. @Kumaarsantosh – Highlighted steel cutlery at Daryagunj Restaurant, assuring hygiene and sustainability.

  4. @MerlinThomas – Covered SA Dosa in Pune using wooden spoons and leaf plates.

  5. @TravellerG – Went beyond spoons - spotted bamboo straws, palm-leaf packaging, and steel utensils.

  6. @AjitThite - Pledged to self-carry eco-cutlery and even plates , blending sustainability into everyday travel habits.

  7. @K.K.Sharma - Documented Haldiram’s (Greater Noida) switch to steel spoons, raising the bar for larger food chains.

  8. @Supriyadevkar – Shared compelling insights about steel and wooden cutlery adoption.

  9. @PrasadVR - Featured Nethi Dosa, Hyderabad, showing steel spoons kept hygienically in a hot water bath.

  10. @ShifaAymal – Visited Udupi Sathkar and documented steel and wooden cutlery, paired with glassware.

  11. @Globe_trotter_ish - Took us to Subko in Mumbai, showcasing steel spoons, wooden bowls & bamboo tissues in her review.

  12. @Rajashree.Parmar97 - Spotted a steely change at Delhi Ke Mashur Chole Kulche in Vadodara - highlighting the mindful spoon swap.

(Choosing the top 12 also from such a rich pool of over 35 entries was a real challenge!)

Some entries were truly inspiring but didn’t strictly match the challenge’s criteria. Nevertheless, your passion helped bring new dimensions to sustainable living.

For example:

@Premalpatel, @Tejal, @NareshDarji, @ShailendraOjha, @Shrut19, @SaylliWalve1, @AbhijeetUniyal, @RosyKohli, @Ptrivedi, @Gurukrishnapriya:

Your efforts are valued and essential.

:rocket: Keep the Momentum Going!

Even though the challenge has officially ended, the journey continues. Here’s how we keep it alive:

  1. :spoon: Mention cutlery in your Google Maps reviews
  • When you spotlight sustainable utensils, you amplify awareness
  1. :clipboard: Create a curated list of eco-friendly restaurants on Google Maps
  • Label them as ā€œplastic-free cutleryā€ to help others find and support them
  1. :luggage: Keep carrying your own cutlery, especially while traveling
  • Many of you already do this—let’s make it a habit, not an exception
  1. :seedling: Encourage restaurants to switch to steel, bamboo, or leaf alternatives
  • Positive feedback helps them realize it’s both feasible and appreciated
  1. :package: Opt out of plastic cutlery while ordering food online.
  • When placing food delivery or takeout orders, request no plastic spoons or forks. This simple choice makes a big impact!

:globe_showing_europe_africa: Final Thanks

To every participant: THANK YOU  Whether you’re in the top 12 or among the many whose stories inspired us, your contribution matters. Together, we’re shifting habits one spoon - and one mindset - at a time.

Let’s keep the change rolling. Tag #NoPlasticSpoons in your next reviews and guide transform our communities toward greener dining.

:herb: I’m truly honoured to be featured among the Top 12 entries in the #NoPlasticSpoons challenge! A heartfelt thank you to @KetanChhaniyara and the entire Local Guides community for this thoughtful initiative that promotes sustainable dining. :folded_hands:

By encouraging the switch from single-use plastic to eco-friendly alternatives like steel, wooden, or biodegradable cutlery, this challenge directly contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially:

  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production,
  • SDG 13: Climate Action, and
  • SDG 14: Life Below Water :ocean: (by reducing plastic pollution).

My entry documenting the shift at Haldiram’s in Greater Noida and Kake di Hatti in Chandani Chowk is just a small step in our collective journey towards greener choices. Let’s continue to map sustainable practices on Google Maps and inspire responsible consumer habits. :round_pushpin::seedling:

Together, we’re not just reviewing places—we’re reshaping the future. :recycling_symbol::green_heart:
