Celebrate World Sustainability Day with Me ♻️✨

Hy Local Guides, :recycling_symbol:

Today is celebrated as World Sustainability Day ♻️ (October 29th), the last Wednesday of October. This day is a perfect time to reflect the incredible work our local guides community has done to promote sustainability and make the planet greener. From supporting eco friendly businesses :recycling_symbol: to adding eco friendly toilets :restroom:, we local guides have been contributing to sustainability on Google Maps and promoting eco friendly ways on Connect too.

Let’s highlight some inspiring efforts of local guides that promote sustainability which have an eco-friendly impact on Google Maps and beyond.

Inspiring Sustainable Initiatives :glowing_star:

Our community has been making a real difference with Initiative and meetups that point towards Sustainability. Some of inspiring initiatives from our fellow local guides are :

  • Menstrual Sustainability :woman:

@SonamW has started an amazing initiative: From Copenhagen to India: A Journey in Menstrual Sustainability where sharing about menstrual sustainable products like plant based pads, biodegradable pads, reusable menstrual cups etc. which have less or no plastic wastes compared to other products.

  • No Plastic Spoons Challenge :spoon:

@KetanChhaniyara challenged us to make a change with Local Guides Lead the Way : Highlights from the #NoPlasticSpoons Challenge, which encourages the community to reduce the usage of plastic spoons.

  • Mapping for Green :green_heart:

@ErmesT has started a sustainable initiative with Mapping For Green April Challenge : #LocalGuidesCleanTheWorld which leads local guides to update Google Maps with sustainable information, such as recyclable vending machines, biodegradable waste bins etc..

  • Sustainable Development Goals :bullseye: & Reviews :writing_hand:

@SharmaK showed us how to contribute towards 17 sustainable goals on Google Maps. He also inspired us on how to add sustainability to our review through Let’s talk about Reviews : Planet Friendly Reviews. Keep an eye for the upcoming SDG meetup in November : The Role of Local Guides in Achieving the SDGs.

  • Tree Plantation Meetup :deciduous_tree:

@Globe_trotter_Ish has organised an amazing and effective Tree plantation - 9th birthday celebrations meetup where she contributed 20 saplings which represents 20 years of Google Maps.

  • Pune Tree Plantation :shamrock:

@AjitThite hosted Pune Tree Plantation Meetup where he and 13 local guides collectively focusing on tree planting while checking and monitoring survival of trees planted during last year’s meetup - a true comment to long term sustainability.

  • Sustainable Travel :luggage:

Adding Sustainable Contributions on Google Maps :sparkles:

As a local guide, we have our contributions to help others by choosing eco-friendly options. @Kumaarsantosh has helped in How to edit Sustainable attributes on Google Maps which makes it easier for users to find eco-friendly businesses.

Let’s see how to make sustainable contributions:

  • Adding media :camera: - You can take photos or videos of sustainable choices provided by the businesses or place such as waste bins, biodegradable products, using renewable energy for charging etc and upload them to Google Maps with captions.
  • Writing sustainable reviews :writing_hand: - You can mention whether a place or business uses reusable products, having an electric charging point or foods they collect are from locally sourced in your reviews.

Beyond today, let’s recognise other sustainable days like Energy Conservation Day, International E Waste Day and International Plastic Free Day to promote greener community.

Thank you so much @Rahul001 for highlighting the amazing sustainability efforts within our community on World Sustainability Day! It’s inspiring to see how everyone’s contributions - whether through eco-friendly product recommendations, SDG-focused meetups, or the much-loved tree plantation drives-are making a real difference both locally and globally.

As the initiator of the #NoPlasticSpoons Challenge, I feel proud seeing our local guides actively reduce single-use plastics in small but meaningful ways. The collective energy behind projects like “Mapping For Green” and “Planet Friendly Reviews” shows that we’re united in our goal of making Google Maps an even more powerful resource for eco-conscious choices.

Let’s keep up the momentum not just today, but throughout the year by supporting other sustainability observances and inspiring new members to join our cause. Every step we take -no matter how small - brings us closer to a greener, healthier future.

Looking forward to hearing more stories of positive change from everyone!
