Help others choose sustainability with Google Maps

Today, we celebrate Earth Day — but if you ask our community on Connect, every day is a good day to take action toward preserving nature and choosing sustainability. This can mean organizing clean-ups at your local beach or city park, planting trees, or simply discarding your empty plastic bottle in the right place.

As a Local Guide, you also have the power to promote sustainability on Google Maps. Get started with these tips, and find inspiration to take action from fellow Local Guides:

Add recycling drop-off locations

Recycling drop-off locations are places — or simply containers — where you can safely dispose of clothes, plastic, cardboard, glass, and other materials and items. You can find these in the streets, parks, shopping centers, train stations, and dedicated areas. Mapping recycling drop-off locations makes them more visible to people who are looking for sustainable ways to discard their waste.

Edit recycling information

Some supermarkets and bigger stores also provide containers for dropping off old batteries, electronics, plastic and glass bottles, and more. These can be easily marked by updating the place’s features directly in the Maps app.

Add sustainability details to your reviews

Such details could be especially helpful when eating out or getting a takeaway. Letting others know whether a coffee shop or a restaurant offers plastic-free alternatives to cutlery and takeaway boxes can help them choose with consideration and may encourage the business owner to consider more eco-friendly options.

Create dedicated eco-friendly lists

Lists can be anything you want them to be: from a collection of your favorite second-hand furniture and clothing shops to convenient EV charging stations and eco-friendly toilets, they are a great way to share sustainable solutions.

Share photos and videos

Are there green points in your neighborhood for collecting recyclables? Maybe there’s a solar-powered mobile phone charging station in your local park or shopping center? Capturing these details on video or photo (with helpful captions!) can make a big difference.

Thank you @Julie_A for such a great post on Earth Day, and also thanks for featuring our small effort in it, which is certainly not a favor to anyone, but rather something we should consider our responsibility towards this Earth, from which we benefit every single second and every single minute , in the form of clean drinking water, crops grown from its soil, air to breathe, and thousands of other countless benefits that this Mother Earth provides us.

But in return, we are only harming it, through environmental pollution, toxic waste in the oceans, industrial discharge, and countless other ways.

For us, this April 22 is a day of commitment , that not only will we take care of this Mother Earth ourselves, but also spread awareness among our families and friends.

Some of these stations are quite rare in a 3rd pr underdeveloped country like most of these countries in west Africa

Are there green points in your neighborhood for collecting recyclables? Maybe there’s a solar-powered mobile phone charging station in your local park or shopping center

Well, new initiatives has been started in city to placing Eco Friendly Recycling and waste bins. With that, Smart Bins with Mobile Charging facility has been installed too.

Recycled bottle have been used to make Waste bins and placed in various parts of city. Bottle caps are made into street arts like Whales.

EV charging station list have been created by @Sariga and 75 local guides so far is updating it.

Thanks for sharing this post and taking this initiative.
I am associated with recircle.in every 2-3 month they have drive they come & pick from our building.

Even our Maharashtra Government is taking initiative to keep the city clean we just have to upload the Garbage photo & location,they clean it with few hours.

Through municipality we have given a sheet which,I have stick on fridge about Dry and Wet waste , E-Waste .

In my building also green dustbin are kept & every day sweeper comes pick waste & dry & wet are seperate.

In our society we had spread awareness to Pads &;Diapers wrap in news paper . Inform sweeper also so he keeps its separately. This way we keep our surroundings clean

I dry skin of vegetables by keeping it in a plate with sunlight it drys ,then make powder sprinkle in my small garden in my window of living room.
