Using the Detroit QLine LightRail for free with Google Maps

:railway_car: A Tram system in the UK or India is called a Light Rail in the US.
The QLine light rail in Detroit runs along Woodward Avenue.

In response to @Rahul001’s post about Celebrating Public Transport Day, I remember taking the QLine light rail service in Detroit in June 2025.

:tickets: This light rail is 100% FREE :open_mouth:
Yes, that is correct.

No need to purchase a ticket, ride the QLine to explore the historic monuments, museums, shops, and also go to your college or workplace for FREE.

This is unbelievable but true.

According to their website, ‘The QLINE offers riders an easy and comfortable way to access the Woodward Corridor and its many attractions, destinations, and establishments,’ and I found it to be true :+1:

Here’s the starting station called Congress Street. I boarded the QLine from here.

The station looks like this. A minimalistic design that barely provides any shelter in the extreme weather in Detroit, like snow and sunshine.

Behind this shelter is the famous monument We  Detroit.
So it is easy to spot this location from far off.

The QLine light rail runs on special rails, leveled with the road surface.
So they cross the zebra crossings like other vehicles.

Pedestrians stop for the light rail to pass like they would for any other vehicle on the road, which are mostly cars.

Similarly, the QLine light rail also stops at traffic signals like other vehicles, which are again, mostly cars.

The photo below shows all modes of public transport in Detroit: the overhead monorail called the People Mover, the QLine light rail, and the SMART bus.

Stepping inside the QLine light rail is easy, also for the wheelchair boound.

The station platform is nicely leveled with the tram floor.

Inside the light rails are displays and audio announcements about the next station, buttons to request a stop, and other such important instructions.

The QLINE runs from Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 12 midnight, though on Sunday, the last trip is at 9 pm

The QLINE’s route is 3.3 miles on Woodward Ave.

There are a total of 12 stops in areas like New Center, North End, Midtown, and Downtown Detroit.

The route and the stops are displayed inside the light rail.

The WiFi is free both inside the light rail and at the stations.

Here are some more features of the QLine light rail in Detroit.

Inside the coach, called the streetcar, press the blue ‘stop request’ button to signal that you want to stop and get down at a station.

Here’s what the stations look like on the route.

When waiting for a streetcar, I noted that commuters stand clear of the platform edge.

Also, I found that no one smoked or ate aboard the QLINE, which was impressive.
No one was littering or selling goods, which was similar to the metro system in India.

The QLine stations have easy access to the courtyards of businesses behind the sidewalk footpaths.

A few steps with handrails lead to the shops and businesses.

I also visited the Google Office in Detroit by deboarding at the Sproat Street station on the QLine.

The QLine has expansive streetcar windows that are extra large in size and offer great city views.

Also, I managed to get a seat just behind the operator, where I can look over the shoulder for the first-person views of the streets of Detroit.

:globe_showing_americas:

It is a great delight to watch the Detroit QLine light rail glide past as you walk on the amazing sidewalk footpaths.

And also to see a top local guide from Detroit @Erna_LaBeau getting down from her car so close to the QLine. But don’t worry, they are following the tram and not facing it

On Google Maps, the route map shows that most museums, shops, businesses, educational institutes, offices, and tourist places can be reached via the FREE QLine light rail and its free WiFi system.

I hope that these photos and the information prove useful when exploring Detroit on your next visit for FREE.

Thank you for the appreciation, @PrasadVR ji

The deep reality about this free public transport is that it is mostly used by locals to travel from huge paid parking spaces to their destinations within the city.

Even a free service has not been able to distract residents from using their cars.

Yes, thanks for confirming @WilfriedB
I’ve seen a video about this facility by a travel vlogger on YouTube.
Though not aware that it has been so for a long time :+1:
That must be an amazing experience for people like me who pay a steep amount to use public transport in Pune and elsewhere.

So true @curatorofmemory

My friend from Pune, who now lives in Detroit, observed that it is only when the people want that the public areas remain tip-top clean.

The municipal corporation does routine, and minimal clean-up, but it remains that way largely because people do not litter or damage it in any way.

That’s one sustainable and community friendly transport @TusharSuradkar.

A transport that is free for the community and people are indeed a solution for better ride and society’s development.

Thank you for showing us a wonderful transport service.
