Hostel Detroit in Detroit came to the rescue as Google Maps was all cluttered with exorbitantly priced hotels in downtown.
It is a vividly colored building tucked away in a lush, green, and silent neighborhood of Corktown.
The hostel is within walking distance of the city center, also called downtown in the US. I usually took the city bus, which cost me 50 cents one way.
There were quirky semi-private and private rooms, as well as homey mixed dorms, all of which share separate gender-specific bathrooms.
Bedding and towels are provided.
Freebies included a guest-use washer-dryer, parking, and lockers.
Parking was available inside the gated hostel lot for a fee.
The street-side parking was probably free.
There were 3 guest kitchens, a lending library, and an entertainment lounge.
Bike rentals were offered on-site for $20 a day, though I did not avail of them.
Hostel Detroit was a comfortable, calm, meet-up spot in which I could make friends, prepare my meals, share new recipes, and also had a toast with fellow travelers.
Whereas most hotels in Detroit were expensive, this hostel was cheap.
As a backpacker, I was a natural guest of a hostel.
My experience at Hostel Detroit was fascinating.
The premises were super clean, and the vibe was welcoming
The great staff, and a comfortable bed by a hostel standard was the icing on the cake.
Communication with the hosts was very quick and convenient.
I had some last-minute changes in my travel plans, and they were super accommodating to meet my needs.
The check-in time was 3 pm, and checkout was 11 am
Hostel Detroit is also LGBTQ+ friendly.
It was so peaceful at the hostel, I miss it a lot now.
I also noticed a difference of about 10 degrees between the heat of the city and the cool of the neighbourhood when I returned to the hostel.
I had stayed at several hostels in the US and in India before, and imagined the worst, but this hostel turned out to be cute, community-centered, and artistic.
Every room had a beautiful design and thought put into it.
Hostel Detroit forever…!!
