The Casimir Pulaski Monument on Chicago Road

The Chicago Road Marker in Detroit is a Michigan Historic Site, meaning it is of great historic importance.

Not many monuments or historic places get this status and the marker.

It is located on Michigan Avenue, a major road in Detroit that goes straight to Chicago.
The marker mentions that Michigan Avenue was formerly the Chicago Road.

Not much of the original dirt road remained when I visited here in June 2025.

A prominently interesting place nearby was the General Casimir Pulaski Polish Heritage Monument.

It was strange to find a monument to a Revolutionary War hero in Detroit when Michigan didn’t even become a state until 1837.

Over 3 days, I walked 17 miles along Michigan Avenue, finding traces of the old Chicago Road.

The monument is well worth the stop, but finding parking for cargoers is difficult.

It is located on a kind of traffic island that only a pedestrian like me can access.

This is one of many highly overlooked landmark statues in Detroit because the statue is located right over a mass grave of the War of 1812.

@TusharSuradkar. America does not have much of history. Most of it dates from 17th century onwards. So in classical sense it is all modern history. But still they honour it

Agree @curatorofmemory
It seems things change so drastically in America within 50 years that they become a memory of the distant past - worth preserving.
