How to Customize Google Maps Lists with Emoji Icons

Hello Fellow Local Guides,

As Local Guides, we all enjoy creating lists on Google Maps; whether it’s our favorite places, must-visit spots for the future, or recommendations we trust. These lists become incredibly useful while planning trips, exploring dining options, or discovering new travel experiences.

Beyond personal use, many of us also curate lists with a deeper purpose: raising awareness about accessibility :wheelchair_symbol:, sustainability :recycling_symbol:, women-owned businesses :purple_heart:, LGBTQ+ friendly places :rainbow_flag:, pet frindly places :dog:, hospitals :hospital:, schools :school:, libraries :books:, and more. These efforts extend far beyond maps, creating a meaningful impact on society through Google Maps and the collective contributions of Local Guides like us.

Saving places to Lists[1] is one of the most popular features on Google Maps. With the introduction of the new option to customize Lists using emoji icons, this feature has become even more powerful. Emoji icons allow us to visually distinguish between different Lists, making it easier to identify their purpose at a glance; without even reading the title. By assigning an emoji to each List, our Maps experience becomes more personalized, organized, and intuitive. Starting a new List and selecting “Choose icon” is all it takes to bring clarity and character to the places we care about.

Let’s walk through a step-by-step guide that shows how we can effectively personalize our Google Maps Lists using emoji icons[2].

Thank you for sharing this tutorial, @Kumaarsantosh you have shared a lot of useful information and explained the instructions regarding emoji in a simple way :+1:

It’s really a informative post @Kumaarsantosh ji:revolving_hearts:

As discussed and demonstrated during our meetup last week about Lists in Maps, this option does not simply exist on my Maps.

@Kumaarsantosh Thanks for the steps, though, for me it is important to find out the root cause and get this emoji feature working for my Browser - MS Edge.

Thank you @NareshDarji for your kind words. It really means a lot for the community.

Pleased to note that you found it informative @mahatokoushik623.

Since the participants were not aware of the option to customize Google Maps Lists with emoji icons, I took the opportunity to explain it to everyone. This feature was introduced a couple of years ago, which led to this discussion.

I also demonstrated the functionality live on both Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers, where it worked perfectly.

At this point, it is unclear why the feature is not working on your MS Edge browser, @TusharSuradkar.

Thank you for acknowledging the steps, I truly appreciate it.

Thank you @Kumaarsantosh ji for sharing useful information with us :clap::clap:

Pleased to note that you found it useful dear @Rushikesh_joshi.

Sehr gut erklärt @Kumaarsantosh.
Ich habe vor Jahren schon auf diese Weise Listen mit dem Smartphone hinzugefügt. Hier folgt ein Beispiel.

I have been wanting to since, thank you so much for the detailed tip @Kumaarsantosh

Thank you @Annaelisa for your kind words and glad that you liked the explanation.

Yes, this feature is available for more than two years by now. Thank you for sharing your list of ‘Nature’ (Long walk in nature). It is perfectly created. Very useful.

Oh, that’s wonderful, thank you for acknowledging, @AlphaSays.

Neuerdings habe ich noch mehr Listen hinzugefügt, aber auf Erklärungen in den Listen verzichtet. Man kann ja von den Listen so schön zu den Rezensionen verzweigen und hat dadurch viele Erklärungen zur Verfügung.
@Kumaarsantosh

Agreed, the linked review provides more detailed insights into the place than the list description alone. Thank you for sharing this perspective, @Annaelisa; it will be very helpful for readers of this post.

Very helpful and informative post

Thanks for sharing this with us :handshake:

Thank you so much, @SayliWalve, for recognizing this as an informative post. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.:handshake:

Thank you for sharing the tutorial in simple steps, dear friend @Kumaarsantosh!

This is such a creative and useful tip, @Kumaarsantosh !

I’ve been exploring your previous posts as well, and they are filled with such valuable insights.

As someone new to this community, I’m truly enjoying learning all these features that make our contributions stand out.

Thank you for sharing your expertise!

Appreciate your acknowledgement, dear friend @PrasadVR. Thank you!
