World Environment Day 2026 – Signboards, Sustainability & My Maps Contribution Story

Last year, on World Environment Day 2025, I shared how railway stations are leading the green way. This year, during my recent journey to Himachal Pradesh, I experienced another powerful perspective on sustainability—this time in the lap of the Himalayas.

While passing through the Atal Tunnel, India’s longest highway tunnel (approx. 9 km), I was surrounded by breathtaking views—snow-covered mountains and an atmosphere that instantly refreshes the mind.

A Stop at the South Portal

While traveling from Manali to Lahaul, I paused at the South Portal (entry point) of the tunnel. The area is well-equipped with essential facilities like washrooms and drinking water fountains. My review of this place on Maps is here Google Maps

What really caught my attention were the signage boards placed there:

Refill, Reuse, Reduce – Leave Every Place Better

A simple yet impactful message—especially meaningful on World Environment Day. This board was placed near drinking water fountain.
Sadly, I noticed litter right below that very board, making the message even more real and concerning.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

This message was at the signage board placed near Ibex (wild mountain goat) sculpture

Framed for Instagram, Trashed in Reality

This message was at the signage board placed in Gemur (Lahaul Spiti) village. It highlights a harsh truth—while we capture beautiful landscapes, we often ignore the waste we leave behind.

Scrap Art with a Strong Message

Another unique attraction was an Ibex (wild mountain goat) sculpture made from scrap metal:

Created using 143 kg of scrap
Promotes Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Features a striking message: “I am watching you”

This artwork is more than just a selfie point—it’s a silent reminder that nature is observing our actions.

It also reflects a serious concern—due to climate change and waste issues, the habitat of Ibex has reduced significantly.

Beyond the Tunnel

After crossing the tunnel, while walking in Gemur village (Lahaul-Spiti), I noticed another board showing a scenic view—but with litter scattered on the ground.

The same message stood there:
“Framed for Instagram, Trashed in Reality”

It clearly shows that this issue is not limited to one place—it reflects our habits as travelers and individuals.

Takeaway

This journey made me reflect:
Are we just visiting places for photos?
Or are we also taking responsibility for them?

Leave every place better than you found it.
