From Kabadi to Climate Action: Mapping Local Recycling Heroes

In April, I jumped into the drive initiated by @ErmesT for Local Guides Challenge - Recycling drop-off locations #onGoogleMaps. I began searching for recycling centers and collection points, but couldn’t locate many. The ones already available on Maps were difficult to visit due to time constraints. But no worries — I still have 25 days left!

Here, I’d like to share about a different kind of recycling collection center in our area. A Kabadi Wala (scrap buyer) visits my colony every Sunday morning to purchase old newspapers and scrap items. In the states of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan of India, I’ve observed permanent scrap dealer shops. In my opinion, these also serve as recycling collection centers, though they go by a different name.

These small shops buy scrap from individuals and later sell it to wholesalers, who pass it on for recycling. To support such micro and small businesses, I’ve added one such center on 2nd April to Google Maps. This can definitely help people who want to sell their scrap but don’t have a Kabadi Wala visiting their area regularly.

Do you know of any such places—whether called the same or by another name? We’d love to hear from you!

Excellent highlight of mobile scrap dealers who post-process and ultimately recycle them.

Yes…indeed Kabadi wala plays a crucial role in Reduce Reuse and Recycle :recycling_symbol: drive.

This practice is quite common in urban areas and specially in the colonies and in the gated societies. This is another form of Small Business run by Kabadiwalas. By running their businesses, they are contributing towards sustainability in a big way.

I have seen them coming up with some thoughtful gifts as well for the contributors instaed of giving money like in my society they have established the Chairs in the park made of reusable components. Sometimes, they come up with Pencils made of reusable materials.

Many thanks and congratulations to you @K.K.Sharma for bringing this up here.
