Connect Moderators are Local Guides just like you and me. They apply the knowledge they’ve gained as active members of our community to moderate Connect and help improve the experience for everyone. You may see them welcoming newcomers, explaining the program, answering questions, and sharing their knowledge with others.
Each month, we share some personal insights from one of our amazing Connect Moderators. This month, meet Shafiul (@ShafiulB). Shafiul lives in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and speaks Bengali and English.

Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh (but my hometown is Cumilla)
What I love about being a Local Guide: Helping millions, meeting new friends, and exploring the world are my favorite things as a Local Guide. That is not only an opportunity but also the best way to improve myself. The place I have gotten [to] through this community is worth more than my other achievements. Now it’s my passion to explore Google Maps daily and help out fellow [Local Guides], host meet-ups, and map accessibility.
Why I’m a Connect Moderator: I love to meet new people and make friends. The Local Guides community is one of the best places for me, where I can get help and help out others. I love my fellows, and to solve common questions from them. Sharing our world and exploring every corner of the globe is what the Local Guides community is all about. That faith and love make me a good and responsible citizen.
I like to welcome newcomers, inspire others, and invite them to join Local Guides campaigns to improve their knowledge through my Happy Guiding wave. I also run the Map Accessibility campaign in Bangladesh to improve the accessibility in my country. Updating accessibility [information] and sharing my experience are my main Local Guides activities on Connect; that is why I am here.
My favorite things to explore: New cities, local tourist spots, and archaeological sites for learning history, culture, and traditions. These explorations also improve and help me to boost my Local Guides activity.
My favorite type of contribution(s) to make on Google Maps: Writing reviews, adding photos, fixing wrong information, checking the facts, and especially updating accessibility information.
Languages I read/speak/write fluently: As a Bangladeshi, I am a native Bengali speaker. I can also write and speak in English well (still improving).
Places I’d like to visit: I would like to visit everywhere. But if I [have to] shorten my bucket list, it will include Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Italy, Malaysia, Singapore, and the USA.
Fun fact about me: I am a learner. Everything I do, I do to learn new things and acquire new skills.
