Hello Friends,
With your continued support, Season 2 of the Ghumakkad Gossip Meet-up series has gained remarkable momentum, now reaching Episode 8. We kicked off 2026 with engaging conversations, collaborative learning, and a shared sense of purpose, setting the stage for an inspiring year ahead.
On April 18, 2026, the episode titled “From Mistakes to Mastery: Tips for Local Guides” brought together 24 participants from around the world, including the Meet-up Moderator, Guest Speaker, and Connect Moderators. The diverse participation, curiosity, and active engagement made the session truly vibrant and enriching, reflecting the growing strength of our global community.
This session revisited to the Back to Basics of being a Local Guide, emphasizing a journey from mistakes to mastery through authentic contributions, quality over quantity, and continuous learning to build a more reliable and inclusive community.
Under the theme “From Mistakes to Mastery,” the discussion emphasized that uploading poor-quality, duplicate, or redundant photos should be avoided, and that every contribution should focus on accuracy, relevance, and usefulness.
I have captured the essence of the session under different sections - take a look, relive the moments, and feel free to share your thoughts!
Quick Introduction of the Attendees
Participants introduced themselves by sharing their Name, City, Local Guide level, and Connect ID, which they were asked to enter in the chat box.
They were also kindly requested to join the virtual meet-up on time, as a gesture of respect towards the Guest Speaker and fellow participants who arrived punctually.
Improvements brought in
Two key enhancements introduced in the GG V2 series:
1. Pre-Session Input Form
A newly designed process has been implemented to make the sessions more interactive and productive. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, questions, or reflections in advance, enabling a well-structured and focused discussion during the meet-up, with the goal of achieving tangible outcomes through this form.
2. Real-Time Feedback System
A new feedback mechanism has been introduced to support continuous improvement. Unlike a complaint redressal system, it is designed to gather constructive feedback in real time, enabling timely adjustments and learning during or immediately after the session. Participants are encouraged to share their insights within 48 hours after the meet-up through a dedicated feedback form.
You may still find this feature enabled, but please note that the feedback cycle for the mentioned meet-up has officially closed . It remains accessible solely for demonstration purposes at this time.
The same applies to the Pre-Session Input Form.
Overview of the Meet-up
The Meet-up Moderator (MM) shared the inspiration and intent behind launching the Ghumakkad Gossip Meet-up Series, detailing how the idea was conceived and outlining his vision for taking it forward for the benefit of the community.
Ghumakkad Gossip is a community-driven initiative, created by us, for us, and with us, aimed at building a more collaborative and cohesive platform for everyone to share and learn together.
Story behind the name
‘Ghumakkad’, a Hindi word meaning wanderer, and ‘Ghumakkad Gossip’ translates to Talk with Wanderer. The emphasis here is on the traveller spirit, not just being a tourist, reflecting the true essence of exploration and meaningful journeys.
The MM also outlined a few basic ground rules to ensure the meet-up remains productive and engaging for all participants.
Introduction of Guest Speaker
As part of the theme “From Mistakes to Mastery,” we were privileged to host Connect Moderator Ermes Tuon (@ErmesT) from Treviso, Italy. His presence added great value to the session, bringing with him extensive experience, practical knowledge, and meaningful insights on learning and growing through mistakes.
A seasoned and dedicated Local Guide, Ermes demonstrated how thoughtful contributions can create real impact. He shared his journey of adding new places, correcting information, and uploading photos, many of which became cover images, while inspiring others to contribute more effectively.
Participants gained valuable insights into sharing genuine, self-taken, quality photos on Google Maps. Overall, the session was both inspiring and insightful, reinforcing our shared commitment to building a more inclusive map.
Gossip with Guest Speaker on the topic
The session with our Guest Speaker began with an engaging and insightful discussion on the importance of maintaining quality in contributions; particularly by avoiding poor-quality, duplicate, or redundant photos, and ensuring that every upload adds real value through accuracy and usefulness. This set the tone for a deeper understanding of what it truly means to contribute meaningfully as a Local Guide.
Ermes elaborated on the core purpose of contributing to Google Maps, emphasizing that every action; whether adding a place, editing details, or uploading photos, should ultimately help both businesses and users. He highlighted that the true objective behind each contribution is to assist people in making informed decisions about places they wish to visit or services they plan to use. He encouraged participants to shift their perspective and think like users themselves, considering what kind of information they would look for, and how it would help them. According to him, adopting this mindset naturally leads to more relevant and impactful contributions.
To reinforce this, he shared several practical examples of common mistakes to avoid, including uploading redundant or duplicate photos (even across different locations), sharing selfies or group photos that don’t add value, posting irrelevant or misplaced images, capturing photos from incorrect angles or locations such as the opposite side of the road or in narrow streets, and using unoriginal or stolen images. He also encouraged contributors to focus on standing out by prioritizing originality and quality.
At the heart of his message was a simple yet powerful idea: help people make better decisions. Whether it’s identifying businesses worth visiting, places worth exploring, food worth trying, or experiences worth having, every thoughtful contribution plays a role in guiding others. He urged everyone to step into the user’s shoes, think from their perspective, and contribute with purpose.
He concluded the session on an inspiring note, reminding everyone to keep their passion alive with the message: “Never stop dreaming.”
While responding to @Ssiddharth2000’s question about how contributions to the Connect platform have evolved, he shared that Connect has undergone significant changes over the past decade since its inception. What began as a small and very different platform has grown into a space where users share original, personal experiences about places.
He also expressed concern about the rise of AI-generated content that lacks authenticity, while acknowledging that AI can be useful when used appropriately. He emphasized that AI should complement not replace real experiences. Highlighting best practices, he pointed to meet-ups as a great example of how genuine experiences can be meaningfully shared.
He also expressed his appreciation and thanked @SonamW and @Manishhh for sharing their thoughtful insights and reflections during the meet-up.
