Dear LG Friends,
Every meaningful journey begins with a small thought.
Sometimes, it is just an idea that quietly sits in our mind. We don’t know where it will lead, how many people it will touch, or whether it will become something bigger than we ever imagined.
For me, Ghumakkad Gossip[1], was one such idea.
It began on January 09, 2025.
There was no grand roadmap, no certainty about how far it would travel. There was simply a desire to create a space where Local Guides could come together, talk about their experiences, share knowledge, learn from one another, and grow together.
Today, as I look back, I am filled with immense joy, excitement, gratitude, and a deep sense of fulfilment and, honestly, a wonderful sense of amazement at how far the journey has come.
Because that small idea has now travelled through two complete series.
Ghumakkad Gossip V1 — 10 episodes
Ghumakkad Gossip V2 — 11 episodes
Together, they represent not just 21 meet-ups, but 21 opportunities to learn, connect, question, share, inspire and grow.
And the story of Ghumakkad Gossip V2 is not really my story.
It is our story.
First, A Heartfelt Thank You
Before talking about the episodes, the topics, the speakers or the achievements, I want to pause and say something that matters the most:
Thank you. 
Thank you to every Local Guide who stood beside this initiative.
Thank you to those who participated actively, those who asked questions, those who shared their experiences, those who encouraged us, those who helped behind the scenes, and even those who silently supported us from afar.
Every one of you became part of this journey.
- Some contributed their time.
- Some contributed their knowledge.
- Some contributed their ideas.
- Some contributed their encouragement.
And together, all these small contributions became something much bigger.
You were the pillars that helped turn Ghumakkad Gossip from an idea into a successful community initiative.
With your support, we successfully completed the second series of 11 Ghumakkad Gossip episodes.
And I am incredibly proud of what we created together.
What Made Ghumakkad Gossip Different?
As the conversations evolved, one thing became clear.
We didn’t want Ghumakkad Gossip to be just another series of online sessions.
- We wanted every conversation to leave something behind.
- Something useful.
- Something meaningful.
- Something that a Local Guide could take away and apply.
That is why every episode was built around three core principles:
Informational
We travelled across a rich and diverse landscape of Local Guides topics, beginning with Back to Basics and exploring the essence of the Local Guides program and its community. Along the way, we discovered the art of crafting quality posts on Connect, celebrating Pride and inclusion 
, mastering smart photography 
, mapping accessibility 
, celebrating women in the Local Guides community 
, turning mistakes into mastery, transforming travel experiences into meaningful stories, and ultimately understanding why every contribution counts.
Each session was more than just a conversation; it was an opportunity to ask questions, exchange experiences, clarify concepts, learn from one another, and take away practical knowledge that could help us become more thoughtful, responsible, and impactful Local Guides.
Insightful
Information alone is not enough.
What makes learning powerful is experience.
Our guest speakers brought their own experiences, mistakes, discoveries and best practices into the conversation. These insights helped us look beyond the obvious and understand how we could become better contributors.
Collaborative
And perhaps this was the heart of everything.
Ghumakkad Gossip was never meant to be a one-way classroom.
It was a conversation.
- One person shared.
- Another questioned.
- Someone else added an experience.
- Another Local Guide offered a different perspective.
And somewhere in between those conversations, we all learned something new.
That is the beauty of community.
The Four Pillars That Guided GG V2
As Ghumakkad Gossip V2 took shape, we wanted the series to have a deeper purpose.
Four strategic pillars became the foundation of our journey.
1. Analytical Data Quality: From Quantity to Quality
The Local Guides journey can sometimes become about numbers; how many photos we uploaded, how many reviews we wrote, how many badges we earned.
GG V2 encouraged us to ask a different question:
How much value does my contribution create?
We shifted the conversation from volume to depth; from simply uploading photographs to capturing clear and useful ones; from adding attributes to ensuring they are accurate; from writing reviews to writing detailed reviews that genuinely help people.
Because one meaningful contribution can sometimes be more valuable than a hundred ordinary ones.
2. Responsible & Inclusive Geotagging: Mapping for Everyone
A map is more than roads, buildings and business names.
- A map represents people.
- Their journeys.
- Their needs.
- Their identities.
- Their accessibility requirements.
- Their safety.
GG V2 encouraged Local Guides to think about accessibility, diversity, safety and privacy while making contributions.
The objective was not merely to add information to Maps.
It was to ask:
“Will this information help another person navigate the world with greater confidence?”
3. Story craft & Knowledge Preservation: Turning Experiences into Legacy
We also looked at Connect differently.
What if our posts could become more than temporary conversations?
What if our experiences could become a library of knowledge for someone discovering that place years from now?
GG V2 encouraged Local Guides to develop better storytelling skills; creating meaningful titles, structured posts, useful visuals, travel narratives and well-preserved local knowledge.
Because places change.
Memories fade.
But a thoughtfully documented story can preserve an experience for years.
4. Community Leadership & Mentorship: Creating the Next Generation
Finally, we wanted to empower people to step forward.
- To organize.
- To host.
- To mentor.
- To initiate.
- To create.
The goal was never to build followers. The goal was to build more community builders.
And seeing Local Guides who participated in these conversations later take initiative, organize their own activities, share their knowledge and shine independently has been one of the most rewarding outcomes of the entire journey.
And Then Came the Conversations…
Every episode of GG V2 was another stop on our journey.
Each one explored a different aspect of what it means to be a Local Guide.
Let me take you through that journey once again.
Back to Basics: The Beginning of Our Journey
Every journey needs a starting point.
So, we began by going Back to Basics.
We returned to the foundational principles of the Google Local Guides program and explored what really separates an average contribution from an exceptional one.
The conversation moved beyond numbers and algorithms and focused on human-first value.
We revisited important platform guidelines, discussed common mistakes and explored how Local Guides can contribute meaningfully while avoiding accidental policy violations.
Our guest speaker, Connect Moderator, @NareshDarji, generously shared experiences and best practices that helped set the tone for the entire V2 journey.
Celebrate: Pride with Local Guides
Our journey then took us into the world of inclusion and representation.
@Rahul001 led an important conversation about how geographic mapping can intersect with social inclusion.
We explored how Local Guides can responsibly identify, verify and highlight LGBTQ±friendly spaces, gender-neutral restrooms and safe community hubs on Google Maps.
More importantly, the conversation reminded us that when adding information to Maps, sensitivity and responsibility matter.
Crafting Quality Posts on Connect
From Maps, we travelled into the world of storytelling on Connect.
@Gurukrishnapriya, the first woman Guest Speaker in the Ghumakkad Gossip House, showed us how a well-crafted Connect post can become more than just another forum entry.
We explored meaningful titles, readable paragraph structures, Markdown, high-quality contextual photographs and ways to encourage organic conversations.
The bigger message was simple:
Don’t just write a post. Create something worth remembering.
Smart Photography for Google Maps: Make Your Photos Pop
Then came the art of seeing the world through a camera.
The Connect Moderator, @MortenCopenhagen took us deep into the practical side of geo-photography.
We discussed framing storefronts, handling difficult indoor lighting, reducing visual distractions, avoiding unnecessary repetitive photographs and being mindful of privacy when people appear in photographs.
And perhaps most importantly, we explored the idea of the “hero photo”; that one photograph that immediately helps someone recognize a place.
Because photography on Maps isn’t simply about taking pictures.
It is about helping someone find a place before they even arrive.
Meet-ups Simplified: Why, What, How & Recaps
At some point, every community needs someone to step forward and say, “Let’s bring everyone together.”
Our “Meet-ups Simplified: Why, What, How & Recaps” session focused on turning that simple thought into meaningful action; from planning and proposals to logistics, participant engagement, hosting, and effective recaps.
We were once again fortunate to have Connect Moderator, @NareshDarji, a Meet-up Champion himself, share his valuable experience and practical insights.
One key message stood out: a meet-up should not end when the meeting ends.
A well-crafted recap preserves the conversations, experiences, and key learnings, making them accessible even to those who could not attend. The Ghumakkad Gossip Meet-up series itself is a great example of how detailed recaps can become valuable reference and learning resources for the wider community.
A meet-up creates the moment; a recap keeps the learning alive and turns an event into community memory.
Mapping Accessibility: A Closer Look
Then we paused to look at the world through the eyes of someone whose journey may be very different from ours.
@AnshukMitra guided us beyond the simple question of:
“Does this place have a ramp?”
We explored door clearance, gradients, step-free pathways, tactile indicators, elevator button accessibility, Braille menus and audio-assisted navigation.
We also discussed something equally important:
The absence of accessibility information can be just as important as its presence.
For someone using a wheelchair or navigating the world with accessibility needs, knowing what isn’t available can be just as valuable as knowing what is.
Her Voice on the Map: Celebrating Women Local Guides
During Women’s History Month, we celebrated the women whose voices add depth and diversity to our community.
The Connect Moderator, @Velvel shared her approach to creating rich, multi-sensory culinary and travel reviews.
We explored ambience, hygiene, dietary requirements, solo-female travel considerations and the balance between beautiful visual storytelling and practical visitor information.
It reminded us that every place can be experienced differently.
And every perspective can add something valuable to the map.
From Mistakes to Mastery
No journey is perfect.
And no Local Guide is perfect.
We all make mistakes.
The real question is:
What do we do with them?
The Connect Moderator, @ErmesT took us through common contributor mistakes; duplicate photographs, uploading receipts or invoices, overly short and non-descriptive reviews, and incorrect categorization of Points of Interest.
But instead of looking at mistakes as failures, the session encouraged us to see them as opportunities to improve.
- To self-audit.
- To learn.
- To refine.
- To become better.
Because sometimes,
our mistakes are simply lessons waiting to be understood.

From Travel to Connect: Turning Experiences into Stories
Then came one of my favourite journeys within the journey.
A two-part exploration of how to turn travel experiences into stories with our seasoned Local Guide @TravellerG.
The first part focused on capturing the experience while travelling; maintaining structured notes, geotagging photographs, recording cultural context and local history, and organizing photographs and other media.
The second part focused on transforming those raw memories into meaningful stories.
We explored narrative structures, destination articles, Google My Maps, public Maps Lists, practical itineraries, ticket information and transportation details.
Most importantly, we explored how to balance personal experiences with useful information.
Because a travel story should not simply tell someone:
“I went there.”
It should help another person imagine:
“I could go there too.”

Make Every Contribution Count: The Grand Finale
And finally, we reached the end of V2.
But perhaps it was also the beginning of a new way of thinking.
The grand finale brought together the lessons of the entire season.
We talked about digital ethics, map hygiene, sustainability and the broader informational and environmental impact of digital mapping with the experience through our passionate Local Guide @curatorofmemory.
But above everything else, we returned to one central thought:
What kind of digital footprint are we leaving behind?
Are we contributing simply because we want another badge?
Another number?
Another achievement?
Or are we creating information that someone will genuinely rely upon?
The challenge was to move from quantity-driven gamification toward meaningful, reliable and lasting contributions.
Because somewhere in the world, someone may be using the information we added today to decide where to eat, where to travel, whether a place is accessible, which road to take or whether a business is right for them.
That makes every contribution matter.
The Most Beautiful Part of the Journey
When I think about the success of Ghumakkad Gossip, I don’t think first about the number of episodes.
I think about people.
I think about Local Guides who came into these conversations with questions and left with confidence.
- People who discovered their own voices.
- People who started sharing more.
- People who began organizing meet-ups.
- People who started mentoring others.
- People who became storytellers.
- People who simply found the courage to step forward and say:
“I have something valuable to share too.”
And today, many of these Local Guides are shining in their own unique ways across the community. Some have even gone on to start their own similar virtual meet-ups and create spaces for others to connect, share, and learn.
For me, that is the real success of Ghumakkad Gossip.
Because community building was never about making one person shine brighter than everyone else.
It is about lighting enough lamps so that everyone gets a chance to shine.
From a Thought to a Community Journey
Sometimes I go back to January 09, 2025 in my mind.
There was just an idea.
Ghumakkad Gossip.
I could never have imagined that this simple idea would eventually become:
V1 — 10 episodes
V2 — 11 episodes
21 episodes.
- Countless conversations.
- Hundreds of shared experiences.
- New friendships.
- New ideas.
- New leaders.
- New storytellers.
And, most importantly, a stronger sense of community.
Looking back, I realize that the journey was never about creating a series.
It was about creating a space.
- A space where people could meet.
- A space where knowledge could travel from one Local Guide to another.
- A space where mistakes could become lessons.
- A space where experiences could become stories.
- A space where participants could become leaders.
And a space where one person’s knowledge could become another person’s inspiration.
This Is the Power of Community
So, once again, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to each and every person who became part of this journey; directly or indirectly.
To every guest speaker.
To every participant.
To every supporter.
To every person who shared a post.
To every person who asked a question.
To every person who encouraged us.
To everyone who believed in this idea.
Thank you.
You didn’t just support Ghumakkad Gossip.
You helped build it.
And that is why I always say:
This is the Power of the Community.
One person can have an idea.
But a community can give that idea life.
One person can start a conversation.
But a community can turn that conversation into a movement.
One person can tell a story.
But a community can carry that story much further than its creator ever imagined.
And perhaps that is the greatest lesson Ghumakkad Gossip has taught me.
We grow when we learn together.
We become stronger when we collaborate.
We create impact when we value one another.
And when a community comes together with a shared purpose, even a small idea can travel a very long way.
From January 09, 2025, to two seasons, 21 episodes, and countless memories…
This has been our journey.
This has been our Ghumakkad Gossip.
And I am deeply grateful that I got to walk this journey with all of you.
