Recap: [Virtual] India, February 21, Ghumakkad Gossip V2: Mapping Accessibility – A Closer Look

Hello Friends,

Thanks to your continued love and support, Season 2 of the Ghumakkad Gossip Meet-up series launched with an amazing response and enthusiastic participation and we are now into Episode 6!

We kicked off the first meet-up of 2026 under the Ghumakkad Gossip V2 Meet-up Series with meaningful conversations, collaborative learning, and shared enthusiasm. As we continue this journey together, let’s make 2026 even more impactful and inspiring.

Let’s take a moment to revisit the highlights of February 21, 2026, through this recap of your favourite meet-up series, Ghumakkad Gossip – Mapping Accessibility – A Closer Look.

I was truly thrilled to witness the overwhelming responses and active participation during the GG V2 launch meet-up. A total of 39 participants joined us from around the world, including the Meet-up Moderator (MM), our Guest Speaker, and Connect Moderators.

Following the successful kick-off meet-up of GG V2, I am delighted to share that a total of 32 participants joined us for the sixth episode. The session brought together inquisitive and dedicated learners from across the globe, including the Meet-up Moderator (MM), our esteemed Guest Speaker, Accessibility Champions[1] and Connect Moderators. The diversity, enthusiasm, and genuine eagerness to learn displayed by the participants made the discussion both dynamic and enriching. Their active involvement and thoughtful engagement truly elevated the quality of the meet-up, reflecting the growing strength and global reach of our community.

This meet-up centered on mapping accessibility on Google Maps, with a strong emphasis on the practical application of accessibility knowledge. Thoughtfully designed, the session highlighted the importance of revisiting foundational principles, something that benefits every participant, regardless of experience level. By concentrating on core concepts and essential practices, the session delivered meaningful value while ensuring the learning remained practical, relevant, and impactful. This “Back to Basics” approach reaffirmed the series’ commitment to creating purposeful, high-quality experiences that empower participants at every stage of their journey.

I have captured the essence of the session under different sections - take a look, relive the moments, and feel free to share your thoughts!

Quick Introduction of the Attendees :waving_hand:

Participants introduced themselves by sharing their Name, City, Local Guide level, and Connect ID, which they were asked to enter in the chat box.

They were also kindly requested to join the virtual meet-up on time, as a gesture of respect towards the Guest Speaker and fellow participants who arrived punctually.

Improvements brought in :chart_increasing:

Two key enhancements introduced in the GG V2 series:

1. Pre-Session Input Form

A newly designed form has been implemented to make the sessions more interactive and meaningful. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, questions, or reflections in advance, allowing for a well-structured and focused discussion during the meet-up, with the goal of achieving tangible outcomes.

2. Real-Time Feedback System

A new feedback mechanism has been introduced to support continuous improvement. Unlike a complaint redressal system, this is designed to gather constructive feedback in real time, enabling timely adjustments and learning during or immediately after the session. To facilitate this, a dedicated feedback form has been launched, which remains open for 48 hours after the meet-up concludes.

You may still find this feature enabled, but please note that the feedback cycle for the mentioned meet-up has officially closed . It remains accessible solely for demonstration purposes at this time.
The same applies to the Pre-Session Input Form.

Overview of the Meet-up :bullseye:

The Meet-up Moderator (MM) shared the inspiration and intent behind launching the Ghumakkad Gossip Meet-up Series, detailing how the idea was conceived and outlining his vision for taking it forward for the benefit of the community.

Ghumakkad Gossip is a community-driven initiative, created by us, for us, and with us, aimed at building a more collaborative and cohesive platform for everyone to share and learn together.

The MM also outlined a few basic ground rules to ensure the meet-up remains productive and engaging for all participants.

The MM also shared the story behind the name:

‘Ghumakkad’, a Hindi word meaning wanderer, and ‘Ghumakkad Gossip’ translates to Talk with Wanderer. The emphasis here is on the traveller spirit, not just being a tourist, reflecting the true essence of exploration and meaningful journeys.

Introduction of Guest Speaker :loudspeaker:

As part of our theme, “Mapping Accessibility”, we had the distinct privilege of hosting Ankush Mitra (@AnshukMitra), India’s first Accessibility Champion. His gracious presence and ever-smiling demeanor brought a truly positive and infectious energy to everyone in attendance.

His engaging approach and clarity of thought on mapping accessibility, supported by practical examples, created an exceptional learning experience for all the participants of this meet-up. We are sincerely grateful for the time and insights he shared, which left everyone better informed and deeply motivated to contribute more meaningfully to the community.

Gossip with Guest Speaker on the topic :studio_microphone:

The session with our Guest Speaker opened with a thought-provoking discussion on how Local Guides can actively contribute to improving accessibility information on Google Maps for differently-abled users. Anshuk clearly explained why mapping accessibility is so important and how it can significantly support those who rely on such information.

He shared personal experiences from his travels with his mother, highlighting the real challenges faced when accurate accessibility details are missing. His stories powerfully reinforced the need for reliable and practical information on Google Maps.

He encouraged participants to contribute meaningfully by adding relevant details through reviews, uploading photos, and updating the “About” section of places with accessibility-related information.

The MM further emphasized that it is not only important to mention the availability of accessible features, but equally vital to highlight their absence. Doing so ensures transparency and helps those in need make informed decisions, ultimately creating a more inclusive and supportive community.

Anshuk emphasized that Local Guides should first assess whether the entrance of a place is accessible, and then review the interior aspects such as accessible floors, washroom facilities etc. He particularly highlighted that accessible parking is just as important as interior accessibility features.

He shared an example of a location where an elevator was installed, but it was not truly accessible due to an uneven gap between the floor and the lift base; posing potential safety risks. This example underscored the need for careful and accurate mapping of accessibility features to ensure both usability and safety.

In response to the MM’s question - “How can businesses be encouraged to provide detailed accessibility information for their locations?” - Anshuk shared that the best approach is to politely and respectfully engage with business owners, explaining the value and benefits of having accessible facilities if they are currently lacking. He pointed out that such improvements can also increase customer footfall and build goodwill.

He also suggested acknowledging and highlighting these positive changes through Google Maps reviews. Adding to this, @KashifMisidia wisely remarked, “प्यार से convince करें” (convince with love), reinforcing the idea that empathy and respectful dialogue can create meaningful change.

In this context, the MM shared an example from one of Mathan’s (@MathanVibranarayan) reviews of a museum in Bengaluru. In his review, Mathan had fairly pointed out that although a ramp was available, the elevator was too small to accommodate a wheelchair along with assistants, and there was also a lack of accessible restrooms.

The owner responded gracefully, explaining that the building is over 60 years old and faces certain space constraints. While major structural alterations may not be feasible due to its heritage status, they assured that possible improvements would be considered. They have an accessible restroom subsequently on the ground floor.

This perfectly illustrates the impact of a fair, constructive, and meaningful review. As Local Guides, our thoughtful feedback can genuinely influence positive change. There are numerous other instances where Local Guides have made a significant impact, helping to bring about meaningful change.

Anshuk further elaborated on the importance of mapping specific accessibility features that often go unnoticed but are extremely valuable for differently-abled individuals. He emphasized documenting tactile paved pathways that assist visually impaired persons in navigating spaces independently and safely. Similarly, he highlighted the need to check for Braille menus in restaurants and auditory aids at bank ATMs, which significantly enhance accessibility for those with visual or hearing impairments.

He encouraged Local Guides to be especially mindful while reviewing prominent public places such as banks, hospitals, railway stations, airports, educational institutions and restaurants. These are essential service points that people frequently visit, and having accurate accessibility information about ramps, step-free entrances, elevators, and other supportive infrastructure can make a tremendous difference.

By carefully observing and mapping these features, Local Guides can ensure that their contributions go beyond basic information and truly support inclusivity. Such thoughtful updates not only empower users to make informed decisions but also promote awareness and encourage establishments to adopt more accessible practices.

The MM highlighted the importance of a collaborative approach in making Google Maps more inclusive, encouraging everyone to share their learnings and experiences with one another. Anshuk reflected on his early days, mentioning how he gained valuable insights through the “One Accessibility” initiatives in collaboration with the Connect Moderators and other Local Guides.

When discussing challenges, he clearly advised participants not to go overboard with contributions, especially when it comes to photography. He stressed that photos should never be taken in places where it is prohibited. Participants cited examples such as airport immigration counters, police stations, and inside restrooms; areas where photography is strictly restricted. He urged everyone to remain mindful of such boundaries and to act responsibly while contributing.

This photo beautifully captures the spirit of togetherness and the shared purpose that brought us all together for this meet-up.

Key Takeaways :high_voltage:

  1. For a place to be truly accessible, the entrance must be barrier-free and easy to navigate.
  2. The mere presence of an operational elevator does not automatically make a place fully accessible.
  3. It is just as important to point out areas or places that are not accessible.
  4. Showcase accessible features through reviews, photos, updates in the “About” section, and by answering simple yes/no questions to assist other users.
  5. Engage business owners respectfully to encourage the installation of accessibility features, or to update accurate accessibility information on their Google business profile.
  6. Be careful and thoughtful when highlighting accessibility features, as your observations can significantly influence others’ experiences.

Disclaimer:light_bulb:

The guest speaker’s inputs are based solely on personal experiential learning and insights. Any practices or approaches discussed should be adopted in alignment with applicable Google policies and guidelines, as deemed appropriate by individual practitioners. Learning outcomes may vary, as they are shaped by personal experience and practical application.

Key Success Factor :trophy:

  1. Effective promotion of the meet-up through multiple networking channels. Thanks NareshDarji, Vikram Singh Valera and TravellerG.
  2. Punctuality of participants - with 80% joining on or before the scheduled time, the Meet-up Moderator (MM) was able to start and conclude the session as planned. Owing to the breadth of the topic and the enthusiastic participation, the formal meet-up extended by about 10 minutes with the consent of Guest Speaker and other participants. Thank you all! Timely attendance also minimized delays in admitting participants.
  3. Pre meet-up mock sessions between the MM and the Guest Speaker ensured smooth coordination and preparedness for the final meet-up.

Really enjoyed going through this recap of the “Ghumakkad Gossip V2: Mapping Accessibility – A Closer Look” session - thank you so much for sharing this, @Kumaarsantosh and @AnshukMitra! :raising_hands:

I especially loved the point about how simply having an elevator doesn’t always make a place truly accessible if subtle barriers still exist - that really made me think deeply about how we map accessibility for everyone.

That insight genuinely changed my perspective. Accessibility is not just about ticking a box; it’s about understanding the real experience of people visiting a place. This session has motivated me to be more mindful and responsible while adding accessibility details on Maps.

A special thank you to @AnshukMitra for sharing such practical and thoughtful insights on how to map accessibility more effectively. It was extremely helpful and easy to relate to.

Also, heartfelt thanks to @TravellerG for the pro tip he shared with me about using emojis in reviews to highlight accessibility features - such a simple yet powerful idea! I’ll definitely start applying that in my future reviews.

Grateful to be part of a community where we continuously learn and uplift each other.
