We all deeply care for our Mother Planet – ‘The Earth’ and in our own ways, we continuously try to protect and preserve it through small yet meaningful actions in our daily lives. What makes this journey even more impactful is when technology and community collaboration come together with a shared purpose.
For me, Google Maps has evolved beyond just a navigation platform. It has become a powerful medium through which we, as Local Guides, can contribute toward environmental awareness and sustainability. Even the smallest updates we make can help create meaningful awareness and inspire responsible choices, and encourage positive behavioural change.
I sincerely appreciate the efforts of the Local Guides team at Google for consistently listening to community feedback and implementing valuable suggestions. One such memorable moment for me was the introduction of the sustainability tag on Connect. This was initially suggested through Connect discussions in March 2025 and the feedback form, and seeing it officially rolled out on June 4, 2025, was truly encouraging. It reinforced my belief in the Power of Community and how collective voices can drive positive change.
As a personal practice, whenever I visit a place, I consciously look for sustainability-related initiatives and make efforts to update related attributes on Google Maps. Using the “Edit Features” option under the “About” tab of places, I regularly update recycling-related information whenever available. I also make sure to answer sustainability-focused questions whenever prompted on Maps.
During my stay at Hotel Casa Fortuna and Chhouy Vathna Angkor Boutique, I came across a simple yet impactful sustainability initiative that immediately caught my attention. Instead of using single-use plastic toiletry bottles, the hotel had installed refillable wall-mounted dispensers in the washrooms.
At first glance, it may appear to be a small design decision, but the environmental impact behind such practices is enormous.
Millions of miniature plastic bottles are discarded globally every single day after very limited use. Refillable dispensers like these significantly reduce plastic waste while also encouraging travellers to become more conscious about responsible consumption habits.
What impressed me most was how thoughtfully sustainability and convenience were blended together:
Clean and organised design
Minimal wastage
Efficient utility management
Eco-conscious hospitality approach
This experience reminded me that sustainability does not always need loud campaigns or grand announcements. Sometimes, it quietly exists through thoughtful systems, practical execution, and responsible decisions made behind the scenes.
Small sustainable choices today can contribute toward a cleaner and greener tomorrow.
Since the recycling attributes for these places were not yet available on Google Maps, I could not directly update them through attributes. However, I made sure to upload photos here and here for both the places respectively highlighting this initiative to spread awareness among fellow travellers and Local Guides.
As Local Guides, we have a wonderful opportunity and responsibility to observe, document, and promote sustainable practices happening around us.
Personally, I always stay focused on discovering and sharing information related to the philosophy of:
Reduce • Reuse • Recycle
Previously, I had also proposed the idea of introducing a “Sustainability” tag on Connect through the feedback form, which was later successfully implemented. More recently, in July 2025, I suggested creating a “Sustainability Champion” featured recognition initiative for contributors actively promoting sustainability across Google Maps, Connect, and their communities. I again highlighted this idea during our community discussions in September 2025, and it received very encouraging feedback.
Moments like these further strengthen my belief in the true Power of Community.
When communities collaborate with purpose, even small contributions can create meaningful and long-lasting impact.
I would genuinely love to hear from you all:
Have you noticed similar sustainability initiatives during your travels, shopping experiences, hotel stays, cafes, or local businesses?
How do you use Google Maps to support environmental awareness and sustainability initiatives?
Please share your experiences, ideas, and thoughts in the comments below. Let us continue inspiring and learning from one another.
Let’s continue building an informed, connected, and stronger
community together.
Stay Happy, Stay Healthy!
