Hy Local Guides,
In this Women’s Week, I am going to introduce an Ophthalmologist who is also an active contributor and a core member of the volunteer community. I met her during one of my meetups.
Let’s meet @Philamazanawungshi.
Dr. Awungshi Philamazan,a paediatric Ophthalmologist and a squint surgeon currently practising in Kerala. She is originally from Manipur and came to Kerala through an All India exam for her post graduation in MS Ophthalmology in 2014 and has continued working here since then. She loves the climate, the place, the people and the food and Kerala has been nothing but kind to her in 11 years of staying here. It’s her home away from home.
Let’s hear what she has to say :
- What do you enjoy most being a Local Guide?
Answer : The thing I enjoy most about being a local guide is it helps me to spread awareness about any new places and update the community about the same. It also inspires me to discover hidden gems, and let people know about its accessibility etc .
- What does international women’s day mean to you, especially as a woman in the medical field and a local guide?
Answer : International Women’s Day, to me, represents a global celebration of women’s achievements, past and present. It’s a day to acknowledge the progress made in the fight for equality and to recognize the strength and resilience of women worldwide. It’s a call to action for everyone to champion women’s rights and empower women and girls in all aspects of life without misusing that power. As a woman in the medical field with a hectic working time and schedule, it has not always been easy but I think with the support of society, achieving work life balance is the key .
- How you think Local Guides program contributes to empowering women?
Answer : Local Guides program empower women in several ways:
-
By writing reviews and sharing photos, women can make their voices heard and contribute to the Community.
-
Local Guides can support women-owned businesses on Google Maps by adding photos and giving reviews. This can help these businesses gain visibility and attract more customers.
-
Sharing knowledge and contributing to the Connect community can be a powerful way for women to build confidence and develop valuable skills in communication, photography, and local knowledge.
-
The Local Guides program offers a platform for women to connect with other women, both locally and globally, through meetups, which can be virtual, hybrid or both. This can foster a sense of community and support.
-
By providing accurate and detailed information about their communities, women Local Guides can help improve their neighborhoods and make them safer and more accessible for everyone.
- Have you ever used your local guides platform to share information related to Health/well beings in our community?
Answer : I am still looking forward to doing that and I’m currently working on a strategy to spread awareness about paediatric eye care among parents and teachers .
- Do you want to share any message on this women’s day to the community?
Answer : To women out there I want to say : You are powerful, resilient, and capable of achieving anything you set your mind to. Embrace your inner strength and celebrate all that you are. Lift each other up, celebrate each other’s successes, and offer support during challenges. Sisterhood is a powerful force for change. Don’t let anything hold you back from pursuing your passions and achieving your goals. Your individuality is your superpower. Celebrate what makes you unique and don’t be afraid to shine. You are valuable and deserving of respect, equality, and opportunity. Never settle for less than you deserve.
Thank you Dr. Awungshi Philamazan for your wonderful interview.*
