Hy Local Guides, :globe_showing_europe_africa: :hourglass_done:

This March 22nd is Viewed and Celebrated as โ€œEarth Hourโ€ globally.

What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is a Global Environmental event started by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Originally started in Australia in 2007 and now celebrated worldwide.

Aim:

  • To create awareness of climate change and the need for protecting the environment and the planet.
  • To promote and show the actions where individuals/community and businesses move into sustainable/eco-friendly resources.

How Earth Hour is Celebrated :

  • The lights are switched off from 8:30pm to 9:30pm local time to show the unity.

How can we participate in the Challenge as a Local Guide?

  • Show Eco - Friendly Landmarks/Locations to the Connect Community. Like this post by @ShailendraOjha.
  • Introduce/Show sustainable businesses highlighting eco-friendly Restaurants/cafes/shops in Google Maps to the community.
  • Energy Efficient POI - Adding Energy efficient points of interest like Smart bins :litter_in_bin_sign: , Smart or eco friendly Toilets :toilet: , etc. in Google Maps and share those stories with the Connect Community.
  • Conducting Meetups to share how you make Maps sustainable and show sustainable businesses and Eco-friendly landmarks.
  • Adding Roads :motorway: - TRAC, An awesome intiative by @SholaIB. By adding roads, people can find more Eco-Friendly Routes in Google Maps.
  • Taking up the initiative - Making Google Maps Spam Free by @Tejal and @NareshDarji. This will make Maps more sustainable. #spamfreeMaps #MakeMapsSustainable

Excellent post @Rahul001 :+1:
5 years ago, I used to participate in the activities you suggested in a big way.
I hosted several meetups in each category and contributed to Maps extensively along those lines of sustainability, etc.

However, I think โ€˜Spam Free Mapsโ€™ is irrelevant to this theme.
Spam removal from Maps is purely a Maps cleanup activity.

Thank you @Kumaarsantosh for your valuable comment and words. Your initiative is really effective to add Bin to Google Maps and thank for @TusharSuradkar telling me how to!

Thank you @TusharSuradkar for your valuable comment. Yes I known much more about sustainability in Maps is through you and other active contributions in Connect.

Isnโ€™t it a part of โ€œsustainabilityโ€ but in Maps?

Thanks for bringing this awareness creating post @Rahul001 . Very much appreciate about highlighting other Local Guides work too. Myself and my husband have joined and taken up the eco-friendly initiative, like beach clean up, educating our neighbourhood to segregate waste etc.

I teach and insist my students to avoid plastic. Not only students I ask each and every person I come across to reduce, reuse and recycle and make our Earth a good place for our children. I have also joined a campaign to create sustainability, by doing wall art.
