Vishram Sthal - The Royal Cenotaphs of Bikaner

Vishram Sthal or Vishram Grah has royal umbrellas carved in stone in memory of the members of the royal family of Bikaner in Rajasthan.

These are not burial grounds as many people believe.

Hindus cremate the dead bodies and these are cremation grounds exclusively reserved for the royal family members.

Later cenotaphs are erected in their memory.

These are built in the typical Indian Kshatriya Hindu Architecture style consisting of cusped domes and cusped arches.

I visited here in 2021.
Some structures are in sandstone depicting the king was not so rich.
Others are mostly made in marble meaning they were wealthy.

The largest cenotaphs stand on 16-24 pillars while the smaller ones have only four.

The hanging canopy in the smaller structure on the right is called a ‘Bangla’.
And together these are called ‘Char Bangla’, which means a 4-Bangla cenotaph.

The cenotaphs are decorated with carvings like floral patterns, birds and animals.

The oldest cenotaph here is that of Rao Kalyanmalji (1539-1571 AD), the fifth ruler of Bikaner.

The last cenotaph is of Maharaja Karni Singh (1950-88 AD).
It looks more modern with little or no decorations and prismatic shapes.

The accessible entrance has all the information and rules.

Here is the summary for the Vishram Sthal, which comply means a place to rest for the departed soul :

The building looks amazing and very beautiful. It seems like an old and historic place. The photos are really nice. I went to India once, but I couldn’t visit many places. I hope to go again someday. I think Rajasthan is called the Pink City, and this structure seems to have a pinkish vibe to it. Thank you @TusharSuradkar, your posts are always great and very informative, which really helps travelers.

You are welcome to India :handshake:

In the state of Rajasthan, are these colorful cities:

  1. Jaipur - Pink City
  2. Udaipur - Silver City
  3. Bikaner - Red City
  4. Jaisalmer - Golden City
  5. Jodhpur - Blue City

Together Rajasthan is called the Rangilo Desh = a colorful region.

Thank you @ShreyaMusings and wishing you a happy Makar Sankranthi as well  :kite:

Starting from Delhi, Bikaner is the nearest if we avoid the typical Jaipur-Agra route.
Then on to Jaisalmer and on the return route will be Jodhpur.
If you have more time, Udaipur can be covered, it is a bit too far from Delhi.

If you search for “Jaisalmer + Tushar” on Connect you will find many detailed articles.
same for “Bikaner + Tushar” and “Jodhpur + Tushar” searches.

Reach out to me for a nice itinerary for Rajasthan when you are ready
and Happy travels…

I regret I am not living in Delhi now and also that you were not a local guide when I lived in Delhi 2 years back
3 years back the number of local guides in Delhi was zero
No one attended my meetup.

Well @TusharSuradkar i have been a local guide for 8 years but just got active now more than ever. I was using connect to understand tips and tricks :smile: that time I was busy with the hustle bustle of the chaotic life and now I am free to explore everything.
I was scared to even talk to anyone that time let alone leave the house but now I go out and make new like minded friends and above all love myself.
