The Bhanwar Niwas in Bikaner is a palatial house or Haveli that belongs to the merchants who routinely gave loans and financial support to the kings of Bikaner and other Emporers far and wide across India. This will give an idea about the kind of wealth they possessed. In return, the king provided them security and logistic support along the trade routes that extended from China to Europe and Africa to Southeast Asia.
When I visited this Haveli last week, I marvel at the main hall that was also a drawing-room that had a camel made in ivory and placed on a teapoy plated with pure gold. Nearby in the room was furniture that was also heavily plated with gold including the sofa and corner table. I stood there without blinking a lid and felt like one big eye.
The main attraction of the hall was this amazing chandelier hanging from the ceiling and I could not take my eyes off until my neck started to pain looking up.
Before entering the hall was a passage that was nothing short of a dream walk. The flooring was made of marble, a lavish chandelier again hanging from the ceiling, and gold-plated furniture lying around.
The floor had mosaic made of tile made of semi-precious stones and each one alone would cost millions. The cupboard and the staircase - there wasnтАЩt anything that ceased to amaze me.
In another room were these gold-plated chairs made of silver and even the wallpapers had decorative Rajasthani patterns plated in pure gold.
The main courtyard was cool-looking and made with red sandstone giving it a rustic and glittering look at the same time. At the center was a fountain that had tier levels made in marble and lined with ivory. This was luxury at its zenith.
After that, I got the opportunity to visit the bedroom that was spacious and super-lavish. The carpet on the floor was imported from Persia and the side table was made of camel bone тАШthat is a high-quality breedтАЩ said the tour guide proudly.
In contrast outside the palace and in the narrow lanes was this street dog living the life of a boss on top of the seat of this abandoned auto-rickshaw that was in a dilapidated condition. The looks and facial expressions of this domesticated canid were clearly hinting at me not to disturb his lazy afternoon nap.
The exterior of the Haveli was no less amazing. The Haveli is itself located in narrow lanes and was done so to minimize the risk of attack by invaders from Afganistan, Arabia, Turkey, and such less-fortunate lands that lie to the immediate west of Rajasthan.
Overall Impression
I spent an hour moving around in the Haveli and did not feel like leaving since the beauty was captivating and the riches were unheard and unseen. No doubt India was called the land of the golden birds with about 25% of World GDP produced in India. But little does anyone know that only a couple of centuries before Arabic and Turkic tribes hoarded into Rajasthan the GDP output was 33% of the World. What do you think was India called then?
Have you been to a palace that impressed you with its decorations of costly items and materials? IтАЩd be interested in knowing your experiences.
Until thenтАж Happy Guiding
