The Decorative Doors of Junagarh Fort Palace in Bikaner

A special attraction of the various palaces and chambers in the Junagarh Fort of Bikaner is the decorative doors. When I visited this fort last month I could not take my eyes off the beautifully decorated doors and walls of the various palaces called Mahals.

This is the door of the Phool Mahal or Flower palace that has Krishna playing the flute on one panel and Radha or perhaps just a Gopika on the other. The wall is also decorated beautifully in floral patterns and other designs that are gold-plated.

Here’s another door of a royal chamber decorated in White, Haldi, and Brown colors.

These two doors have yet another design and also note the lovely Mahirap in marble on the upper side of the doors that adds to its elegance.

Entrance to the Badal Mahal or the Cloud Palace with a charming design.

This is a Jharonka or royal window that is normally open but in this case, has captivating doors.

This is a passageway to one of the chambers that again has Krishna-Radha on the door panels and the entire area including the ceiling is painted in dazzling designs. Also, note the Swastik on the beam for prosperity and good fortune besides there is also the elephant fight scene painted on the nearer chamber.

The entrance to chamber 227 also has an enthralling painting and some nice carvings on the wooden panels.

These doors at the entrance of the Anup Mahal have Sandalwood panels with carvings that are ornate and delightful.

This is the passageway to the concubine chamber with the door and the walls having spellbinding decorations.

The ceiling too is no less enthralling.

This is the other end of the same passageway.

Here are more doors and chambers all of which are decorated with ravishing patterns.

In Bikaner’s Junagarh palace, there is no end to halls with doors that have mesmerizing decorations everywhere.

Also, note the ceiling in this chamber. This is an all-around 360° beauty from the medieval age that looks great even today.

The mirrors on the wall are not made of glass but polished metal plates and provide a good reflection even after hundreds of years.

Finally here’s a double-folding door each of its panels and also the adjacent walls left me spellbound.

Have you been to a palace that was mesmerizingly-beautiful and captivated your mind like never before?
I would be interested in knowing your experience and seeing a photo or two if possible.

Until then… Happy Guiding

The Junagarh Fort Palace is entirely accessible right from the street level up to the main courtyard inside.
This huge ramp is especially a significant feature in this regard and it also has serrated tiles to prevent slippage.

Here’s a snapshot:

What a beautiful art is this!! Whole Rajasthan is famous for its artistic palaces.

Nice photos and information @TusharSuradkar

Are these palaces open now for tourists? Are there any restrictions for visitors?

Yes, they are @abhishekpatk

The annual camel festival in Bikaner was unfortunately canceled a day before without notice :disappointed_relieved: and I had traveled 450 km primarily for that.

Restrictions like social distancing etc. are there and also in Jodhpur, there is a night curfew after 8: pm though it only involves the closing of commercial places like hotels, shops, etc. but people can move around.

It is great! I am impressed this wonderful Palace and decorated doors!

They are all masterpiece of decoration!

All doors perfect safe after many centures. I have never seen such unique decoration of doors.

The doors are decorated with carvings or paintings!? Are they inlaid with mother-of-pearl or ivory?

Thank you for sharing @TusharSuradkar ,

P.S.My congratulations to you with moderator!

Thank you for the compliment @helga19

The door decorations involve a mix-and-match of all that you have mentioned and the secret to the art in good condition as they used natural colors made from herbs and everyday vegetables, fruits, and some spices according to the tour guide.

Ivory was available commonly in the medieval period since elephants existed in abundance in those days. Pearl was not popular in the folk-art and the royal-art since the region is far away from the sea-shores.

Initially, I did not notice them but when they started coming one-after-another, each one more stunning than the previous, I went back to the start point and did a trip just noting the doors.

The Rajasthani people in India are well-known for their skills and deep interest in art, colors, and richness @Annaelisa

They are now spread all over India and build amazing structures in marble and costly stones in every corner of the country. We have many such structures in Pune.
