A special attraction of the various palaces and chambers in the Junagarh Fort of Bikaner is the decorative doors. When I visited this fort last month I could not take my eyes off the beautifully decorated doors and walls of the various palaces called Mahals.
This is the door of the Phool Mahal or Flower palace that has Krishna playing the flute on one panel and Radha or perhaps just a Gopika on the other. The wall is also decorated beautifully in floral patterns and other designs that are gold-plated.
Here’s another door of a royal chamber decorated in White, Haldi, and Brown colors.
These two doors have yet another design and also note the lovely Mahirap in marble on the upper side of the doors that adds to its elegance.
Entrance to the Badal Mahal or the Cloud Palace with a charming design.
This is a Jharonka or royal window that is normally open but in this case, has captivating doors.
This is a passageway to one of the chambers that again has Krishna-Radha on the door panels and the entire area including the ceiling is painted in dazzling designs. Also, note the Swastik on the beam for prosperity and good fortune besides there is also the elephant fight scene painted on the nearer chamber.
The entrance to chamber 227 also has an enthralling painting and some nice carvings on the wooden panels.
These doors at the entrance of the Anup Mahal have Sandalwood panels with carvings that are ornate and delightful.
This is the passageway to the concubine chamber with the door and the walls having spellbinding decorations.
The ceiling too is no less enthralling.
This is the other end of the same passageway.
Here are more doors and chambers all of which are decorated with ravishing patterns.
In Bikaner’s Junagarh palace, there is no end to halls with doors that have mesmerizing decorations everywhere.
Also, note the ceiling in this chamber. This is an all-around 360° beauty from the medieval age that looks great even today.
The mirrors on the wall are not made of glass but polished metal plates and provide a good reflection even after hundreds of years.
Finally here’s a double-folding door each of its panels and also the adjacent walls left me spellbound.
Have you been to a palace that was mesmerizingly-beautiful and captivated your mind like never before?
I would be interested in knowing your experience and seeing a photo or two if possible.
Until then… Happy Guiding ![]()
