Supporting Local Businesses with Real Roots - Old Mumbai Ice Cream

Taking inspiration from @Supriyadevkar’s visit to the locally grown ice cream called the Old Mumbai Ice Cream, and the subsequent visit by @AjitThite to an outlet in Miraj, I searched for a franchise on Google Maps and found no less than 4 of these very close to my residence in Pune.

To get there, I walked for 2 kilometers from my residence in Pune to the nearest bus stop.

Note that this bus stop does not have a shed, nor a shade, so carry an umbrella when it is raining, as I did today.

Bus #114 took me up to the expressway.

I alighted at the Sadanand Corner bus stop where Baner Road intersects the Expressway.

Then I walked about a kilometer to reach the ice cream parlor.

Here are a few photos of the interiors that show the ordering area and the menu on display.

Here is a view of the ice cream flavors available

I tried my favorite Anjeer Figs flavor and found it to be delicious :face_savoring_food:
Although they did not have real Figs Anjeer cuts, the ice cream was natural and creamy.

I always order this flavor at a new ice cream parlor to compare their taste.

They served it in a disposable paper cup, showing their commitment towards sustainability

Here’s some more of their interior decoration and their latest flavors on the storefront.

They have ample parking, so visiting there next time with local guides or my family should not be a problem.

A metro station is opening right in front of the Old Mumbai Ice Cream Parlor, but that is at least a year away.

Another important point about this local business is that they are LGBT+ friendly.

This post is in response to the challenges by:

  2. @Rahul001 - Celebrate International Plastic Free Day.

Supporting real roots and encouraging public transport or walking — this is a delicious way to promote SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities :ice_cream::oncoming_bus:

Thank you @TusharSuradkar for sharing sustainable local ice cream shop in Mumbai.

Apart from taste & sustainable options, ice cream shops have creative designs for their cups. Above are from Naturals Ice cream.

Yes, this is an authentic place where the ice cream was started by a common man at his home back in 1976 and then expanded into franchisee system all over Maharashtra.

Thank you @TravellerG

In Pune, we have dozens of such locally rooted small businesses that have survived 80-100 or more years easily.
