Hy Local Guides,
As part of Let’s Empower Women Owned Businesses on Google Maps by @Globe_trotter_Ish, I am glad to introduce a women owned business which is purely handcraft and supports Local Artisans. They are also LGBTQ+ friendly where they had many customers from different spectrum coming for their clothes.
Let’s meet Neenu!
Neenu with her husband, Raj.
Neenu, founder of Southloom, a leading Traditional Clothing store based in Trivandrum. Southloom was born out of a passion for preserving Kerala’s rich handloom heritage while blending it with contemporary designs. Her and the store’s mission is to provide high-quality, authentic handloom products that appeal to both traditional and modern tastes. Over time, Southloom has grown from being a Kerala handloom brand to a complete Indian ethnic clothing store, offering garments woven by skilled artisans from across India.
Let’s hear what she has to tell!
- Can you tell us about your clothing store and what inspired you to start it?
Sarees displayed at the store.
Answer : Southloom specializes in authentic handloom sarees, mundus, and other traditional wear that showcase the craftsmanship of local weavers. The inspiration to start Southloom came from a deep appreciation for Kerala’s textile heritage and the need to preserve and promote it. I noticed that despite the exceptional quality of handloom products, many weavers struggled to reach a wider audience. Southloom was established as a platform to bridge that gap, ensuring these artisans receive fair wages while offering customers unique, high-quality clothing. Today, we’ve expanded our offerings to include ethnic wear from various regions across India, providing a diverse collection that reflects the country’s vibrant culture and artistry.
- How does your business promote LGBTQ Friendliness and Inclusivity?
Answer : Inclusivity is at the heart of Southloom. We believe that fashion should be for everyone, regardless of gender, identity, or background. Our store is a safe and welcoming space where diversity is celebrated. We make conscious efforts to feature inclusive designs and styles that resonate with all individuals.
- How do you use Google Maps to promote your business?
Answer : Google Maps has been an essential tool for increasing our visibility and attracting customers. We’ve optimized our Google My Business profile with high-quality images, customer reviews, and updated information about our products and services. By encouraging satisfied customers to leave reviews, we build trust and credibility. We also use Google Maps to highlight seasonal promotions and events, making it easier for customers to locate and visit our store.
- How do you think your business contributes to women empowerment?
Answer : Southloom is committed to empowering women at every level. A significant portion of our workforce, including our weavers and artisans, are women. We provide them with fair wages, skill development opportunities, and a platform to showcase their craft. Our store also employs and trains women in various roles, fostering financial independence and career growth. Additionally, we collaborate with women-led cooperatives and organizations that support women in the handloom industry.
Thank you Neenu and Raj, her husband, for giving me such a wonderful interview.
