Introducing an Unofficial Connector Community for Stronger Community Building

Join Local Connectors Community

Hello everyone :waving_hand:

While analyzing meet-up data for my post
:backhand_index_pointing_right: Community-Led Local Guides Meet-ups in 2025: An Overview (January 2026),
I came across an important insight:

  • :bar_chart: Out of 635 meet-ups, 117 recaps (18%) were still pending

This raised a key question about engagement and follow-through.
Around the same time, a comment from Connect Moderator MortenCopenhagen made me reflect deeply on another aspect of our community:
:backhand_index_pointing_right: Who can attract signups and actually ensure participation?

:bar_chart: From Data to Direction: My Journey So Far

To address these gaps, I initiated:
:backhand_index_pointing_right: Introducing the Monthly Community-Led Meet-up Leaderboard

However, I received valuable feedback that such a leaderboard might unintentionally create a race, potentially compromising the quality of meet-ups.

Taking this concern seriously, I paused, reflected, and redesigned the approach.

:counterclockwise_arrows_button: Introducing “Recap of Recaps” Series

Instead of focusing on competition, I shifted towards quality, transparency, and learning:

Key Observations:

:round_pushpin: February 2026 (as of 23 March):

  • :red_exclamation_mark: 19 recaps (22%) were pending
  • :red_exclamation_mark: 16 recaps (17%) had no participant details
  • :warning: Several had incomplete participant lists

:round_pushpin: March 2026 (as of 23 April):

  • :chart_decreasing: 71% recap completion rate (24 out of 83 still pending)
  • :red_exclamation_mark: 18 recaps (22%) had no participant details

:writing_hand: What Needs Attention?

To make meet-up recaps more impactful, please follow the community guidelines outlined here: How to write a great meet-up recap. Additionally in order to my series of Recap of Recaps I would like to request

:check_mark: Clearly mention total number of participants
:check_mark: Include usernames of participants

Because truly,

Community-led meet-ups are the heart of Local Guides Connect
They help us learn, connect, and grow together.

:handshake: My Continued Efforts Towards Community Building

This journey is not new for me.

  • Since March 2025, I have been consistently welcoming new members by congratulating them on achieving the New Friend badge
  • I have contributed to monthly introduction threads:

Despite these efforts, I often wondered:

:red_question_mark: Are new Local Guides actually reading and engaging?
Even simple poll participation remains very low.

:police_car_light: A Concerning Insight

While preparing

I observed that:

:warning: Some Local Guides who earned all three basic badges (New Friend, Newly Popular, New Writer) in a single day
:backhand_index_pointing_right: did not return to Connect afterward

:seedling: Awareness Has Always Been My Focus

In
:backhand_index_pointing_right: Growing the Community: Awareness Matters

I emphasized:

Let’s ensure that no new Local Guide misses out on Connect due to lack of awareness.

This post was also pinned by former Googler DeniGu (Feb 2025).

:light_bulb: From “Community Builder Badge” to Real Action

During Connect Moderator JanVanHaver’s podcast (Episode 52 – 10 Years of Local Guides), I proposed the idea of a “Community Builder” badge.

Today, my focus has evolved:

:backhand_index_pointing_right: It’s not about the badge anymore
:backhand_index_pointing_right: It’s about recognizing and strengthening community builders

:rocket: Introducing the Local Connectors Community

With all these experiences and insights,
I would like to propose the creation of an:

:globe_with_meridians: Unofficial community led “Local Connectors" Community within Local Guides Connect

:bullseye: Purpose:

  • Strengthen community building efforts
  • Improve meet-up quality and recap culture
  • Work towards 100% recap completion
  • Ensure recognition of every participant
  • Increase engagement of new Local Guides

:handshake: How to Join?

If your thoughts align with this vision:

:speech_balloon: Comment on this post
:envelope_with_arrow: Or send me a DM

We can then connect virtually and
:backhand_index_pointing_right: co-create a structured approach forward

@SharmaK

Fantastic initiative I’m not too familiar with the recap meetups .But understand the concept of measuring the performance of meetups or any proposed activity.

Especially chasing numbers or badges with remembering what was the purpose to receive the badge or claim a status .

All the best with your proposal

Very interesting question @SharmaK, and this reflects something that I’ve asked before.
What is a Local Guide, and what is Connect? Your expectation that every Local Guide would engage actively on Connect might not be realistic.

I was given the title Local Guide by Google after I got my first Android phone and my location and activities started being tracked. But apart from Google Maps nudging me to post photos that I took and review places that I visited, it was a long time before I had any real feeling of being a Local Guide.

I didn’t initially come to Connect for the purpose of “connecting”. My earliest visits were more of a help forum nature, where I came to get help about something that wasn’t working right on Google Maps. Along the way, there have been a few names that I feel connected to, and of course, there’s @AdamGT of Leaderboard fame, where I interact regularly with the monthly statistical boards.

Your analysis of meetup outcomes as a measure of Connect health could also be a perception not shared by all. My participation in meetups has never been driven by the fact of Connect membership, but rather out of relevance or necessity. An example would be the TRAC meetups by @SholaIB relating to the road mapping program, of which I’m an active member.
