šŸš† Exploring India Through Railways: Travel & Stay Made Easy

Traveling across India is not just about reaching a destination—it’s about experiencing the journey itself. For me, traveling with Indian Railways has always been the most preferred way to explore the country. It connects not only cities but also cultures, people, and stories.

:station: Why I Prefer Train Travel

Indian Railways is the lifeline of the nation and often the first choice of transport for millions. Personally, I always prefer train journeys because they are comfortable, economical, and offer a unique opportunity to witness India’s diversity—from bustling cities to peaceful countryside landscapes.

:admission_tickets: Reservation Tips Every Traveler Should Know

Since trains are in high demand, advance reservation is highly recommended.

    • Currently, tickets can be booked up to 60 days in advance from the train’s originating station. Booking opens at 8:00 AM simultaneously at railway reservation counters and on the IRCTC website.
  • For example, if I plan to travel from Kanpur to Delhi on 11th August by Rajdhani Express (Train No. 12423), which originates from Dibrugarh, the booking opens 60 days before its departure from Dibrugarh, i.e., on 9th June. For Kanpur, this effectively means a 63-day advance booking window.
  • You can check train availability and book tickets on the official IRCTC website.
Smart Tip: Use ā€œWhere is My Trainā€ App (For Checking Only)

Usually, I use the Where is My Train app to quickly check train details before booking.
:backhand_index_pointing_right: No need to calculate the 60-day window. Just open the Where is My Train app, enter your journey details, and it will show when booking opens.

If it’s not open yet, note the date and set a reminder for 7:50 AM—so you’re ready to book right at 8:00 AM on the IRCTC website.

  • Go to the ā€œTicketsā€ section in the app
  • Enter your source and destination stations
  • Select your travel date
  • The default quota is General , but you can change it if applicable
  • Tap search, and you’ll instantly see:
    • List of all trains
    • Available classes
    • Fare details
    • Seat availability

This gives a quick overview at a glance , which is very helpful.

:backhand_index_pointing_right: However, I personally do not book tickets through this app because it may include additional charges.
Instead, I use it only for checking , and then book directly via the IRCTC website https://www.irctc.co.in

Additionally, the app is very useful for:

  • :round_pushpin: Checking live running status of trains
  • :ticket: Tracking PNR status anytime during the journey
Tatkal Booking – A Last-Minute Option (Not Reliable)

If you miss advance booking, Indian Railways offers:

  • Tatkal & Premium Tatkal quotas (opens 1 day before departure)
  • AC class booking starts at 10:00 AM
  • Sleeper (non-AC) booking starts at 11:00 AM

However, confirmed tickets are not guaranteed, so I always recommend booking in advance whenever possible.

Cancellation & Refund Tips

Plans can change, and Indian Railways provides flexibility:

  • You can cancel tickets and receive a refund (after deduction of nominal charges as per rules)
  • For maximum refund, cancel at least 48 hours before departure
  • No refund is provided if you cancel within 4 hours of departure from your boarding station
Confirmed Ticket Cancellation Charges

:small_blue_diamond: More than 48 hours before departure (Flat charges per passenger):

  • AC First Class / Executive Class: ₹240
  • AC 2-Tier / First Class: ₹200
  • AC 3-Tier / AC Chair Car / AC 3 Economy: ₹180
  • Sleeper Class: ₹120

:small_blue_diamond: Waitlisted & RAC Tickets:

  • Cancellation charge: ₹60 per passenger

:small_blue_diamond: Between 48 hours and 12 hours before departure:

  • 25% of total fare (subject to minimum flat charges mentioned above)

:small_blue_diamond: Between 12 hours and 4 hours before departure:

  • 50% of total fare (subject to minimum flat charges)

Luggage Safety – A Must-Know Tip

Luggage security is an important concern while traveling.

  • I have personally faced luggage theft twice during train journeys
  • I strongly recommend carrying a lock and chain to secure your bags
  • Indian Railways provides hooks under lower berths, where passengers can safely lock their luggage

Taking this simple precaution can save you from major inconvenience.

Rail Madad App – Help During Your Journey

For passenger convenience, Indian Railways has launched the Rail Madad app, which allows travelers to file complaints in real-time if they face any issues during the journey.

  • Authorities actively monitor complaints and respond promptly
  • Railway staff on duty can reach your seat/coach to resolve the issue

This is a very effective facility—I have personally used it, and the response was quick and helpful.
:backhand_index_pointing_right: You can also access the web version of Rail Madad for the same services: https://railmadad.indianrailways.gov.in

:bed: Stay Options at Railway Stations

One of the most useful yet lesser-known facilities is Railway Retiring Rooms.

  • Available at most major stations
  • Safe, economical, and ideal for travelers—especially solo travelers
  • Flexible check-in options (varies by station: fixed 8 AM/8 PM or custom timing)

In Delhi, retiring rooms are available at:

  • New Delhi Railway Station
  • Delhi Junction
  • Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station

AC rooms and dormitories are available at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin, while Delhi Junction mainly offers non-AC options.

These rooms are not only budget-friendly but also spacious and convenient, especially if your train arrives at odd hours. Railway-managed retiring rooms are simpler (without extras like towels or toiletries) but still offer good value.

However, getting a confirmed retiring room is not always easy due to high demand. I strongly recommend planning in advance—book your train ticket early (up to 60 days in advance), and then reserve your retiring room on the same day through the official website.

Important Booking & Check-in Tips
  • If check-in timing is fixed (8 AM / 8 PM) , plan carefully while booking
  • Example: If your train arrives at 11 PM , book the room from 8 PM , then check in after arrival
  • After reaching the station, go to the retiring room office where the attendant will assist you

:mobile_phone: After booking:

  • You can save the booking ticket on your mobile
  • You will also receive confirmation on your registered email (Gmail)

:locked_with_key: Login Tip:

  • Use the same username and password as your IRCTC ticket booking account

:warning: Early Morning Arrival Scenario

  • If your train arrives at 6 AM , the system may not allow booking from the previous night
  • In such cases, you can:
    • Use the railway waiting room (basic facilities available)
    • Freshen up and even take a bath if manageable

:couch_and_lamp: Alternative: IRCTC Executive Lounge

If waiting rooms are not comfortable, you can use IRCTC lounges :

:round_pushpin: Delhi Locations:

  • Platform No. 16 side – New Delhi Railway Station
  • Platform No. 1 side – Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station

:credit_card: Some credit cards offer:

  • Free entry
  • Complimentary meals
  • Up to 2 hours of stay

(Otherwise, paid entry is also available)

:receipt: Booking Duration & Smart Trick

  • Retiring rooms can be booked for a maximum of 48 hours per PNR
  • If you have both onward and return tickets (2 PNRs) :
:backhand_index_pointing_right: You can extend your stay up to 4 days (48 + 48 hours)

:money_with_wings: Approx Charges (Delhi Example)

  • New Delhi Railway Station (AC Dormitory): ₹285 + GST (24 hrs)
  • Delhi Junction:
    • Non-AC Room: ₹475 + GST (24 hrs)
    • Dormitory: ₹143 + GST (24 hrs)

:light_bulb: Pro Tip: Retiring rooms are in high demand—book immediately after confirming your train ticket to avoid last-minute hassle.

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Book here: https://www.rr.irctc.co.in/home

This simple planning can make your journey much more comfortable and stress-free.

:seedling: A Sustainable Way to Travel

Railways are one of the most eco-friendly modes of transport. By choosing trains, we contribute to sustainable travel and support greener communities.

 Final Thought: Role of Local Guides

As Local Guides, railway journeys offer opportunity to:

  • Add reviews of stations
  • Share insights about facilities, cleanliness, and accessibility

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Have you rated or reviewed any railway station on Google Maps?

I’d love to hear about your experience—share it in the comments!

Hello dear Dr Ji…
Thank you very much for this detailed article - amazing…:ok_hand::mending_heart:
You have dedicated a lot of hours to conceive and present it.
Congratulations…:folded_hands:

In Southern part of India, we travel a lot in train - but to access destinations like Delhi, flight will be practical for us.

Being Frank, I have never used retiring rooms in Railways - the main reason being…we mostly travel to Kerala and after getting down, we travel to our homes…the next reservation in mind is the cleanliness of toilets… what is your experience/opinion?

Thank you very much for your efforts…
Most sincerely

Thank you @TravellerG sir for your kind appreciation :folded_hands:

Absolutely agree with your point—flights are definitely more practical for reaching destinations like Delhi, especially for long distances. However, many people still prefer trains for shorter routes, or when flight connectivity is limited. Sometimes, considering airport check-in time and overall travel duration, trains can be equally convenient.

This post is mainly targeted at Local Guides who are planning to travel by train, regardless of distance. Personally, I often prefer train journeys even for long distances. I also like staying in railway retiring rooms—they are usually spacious and reasonably priced, especially at stations like Delhi where they are still managed by the railways.

At some stations, these facilities are now run by private agencies and converted into hotel-like setups, which often means smaller rooms and higher charges with added services. In contrast, railway-managed rooms are simpler (without extras like towels or toiletries) but still offer good value.

Regarding cleanliness, I’ve observed that major stations, including Delhi, maintain fairly clean washrooms nowadays, thanks to increased public awareness and effective complaint systems. At smaller stations, issues may still arise, but with follow-up, things usually get resolved.

Great info. Worth a bookmark.

Thank you very much for your detailed response… Ji…

You are absolutely right, dear @SharmaKK Ji…
This is our case if we are traveling from Bangalore to Kochi… From our house, it takes 2 hours to Airport, and 1:30 minutes in advance we have to reach the airport for check-in… Over 1 hour flight time and again travel time of two hours to get to our relatives house… and all these during active hours…

Instead train may take a bit more time, but, we book the sleeper and reach Kochi in 10 hours…all 8 hours, sleeping…

Well, cleanliness is an important update you gave - Thanks.
Many, times we have used privately run Rest Rooms in railways and are acceptably clean.

Rest is personal preference…right Ji?
Once again thank you…

Most sincerely
