Every day is Earth Day - Introduce your Green Local Guide attitude

April 22 is Earth Day.

An important moment, a symbolic day for talking about our planet. A day for sharing our love for the planet, a day for thinking about the real condition of the earth.

With this post I would like to start a special Green edition of the Introduce yourself thread: introduce your Green Local Guide attitude.

Please use this thread to post your “I’m green” or “Heart Day” posts.

Name: Ermes,

Location: I am an Italian Local Guide

I am also a chemical engineering. This gave me probably a special feeling about the meaning of pollution, with a particular attention to the plastic waste.

What I usually do for helping the environment is:

I divide and separate my waste, so as to facilitate disposal and Recycle. I Reduce the amount of disposable packaging by Reusing packaging products and containers.

Is the environment part of your Local Guide experience?

Yes of course, in two different ways:

Highlighting in my contribution the “green” attitude of the businesses. I am usually adding photos about this subject, when I can find them: signs and recycling bin are always present in my contributions, if I can find them.

Contributing on natural features, with photos and reviews, and a note about accessibility

What about your experience in Local Guides Connect?

Local Guides Connect is a perfect platform for talking about environment, and for programming environmental Meet-ups. Through the LocaGuidesCleanTheWorld program I have participated to several Cleanup actions. The most important are:

Cleanvalnerina, in the are of the earthquake on central Italy

Clean The World - Connect Live 2018 Edition

Clean The World - Puliamo la spiaggia di Jesolo

What about the Earth Day?

A lot of people think that “the Earth Day” is the day in which everyone of us should do “something” for the Earth.

My thought is that “Everyday is Earth Day”, every day is the day for caring about environment, every day is the right day. Planting a tree, recycling, cleaning reducing the use of plastic, reusing a product, is something that we can do everyday.

Earth Day is of course an important moment for conveying the message and highlighting positive experiences.

Do you think the Local Guides program can be improved about environment?

Yes, I think so. Google can improve a lot this aspect, but this is also something that we can do, through our contributions in Google Maps, and our contributions in Local Guides Connect.

My special Dream is to have, on 2020, Waste reporting - on Google Maps

What about you? Tell us about your Green Attitude replying to this post. We will be happy to read and to welcome you

Thanks for awakening our green attitudes @ErmesT , I once visited a Maritime Museum locally, since it is located at the bank of the ocean I noticed that on the water around the ships there are plastic bags and plastic containers floating on the water. I felt like I can do something but I did not have an idea of what to do to solve or report this. From what you have done and seen before what could be the first step for me to help here as it looks like this will require trained people and special tools or equipment to clean the water at this Museum.

Any suggestions @ErmesT and all the local guides here?

Thank you for asking @Raphael-Mahumane

Of course, we are not trained and we don’t have special tool so, what can we do?

At first we can report. In this post I am explaining How we can actually report. In here I am preparing a report for an area where, due to the volume of the abandoned waste and the limited access to the area, we need public help for the clean-up.

In the future, I hope we will have Waste reporting - on Google Maps (actually is just an idea).

You can also share some photo with us, and write a post about the situation of the museum. Making it public generally can create a positive reaction. Creating discomfort is sometime a good solution to start to talk about environment and plastic pollution

Hi, my local guides friends. I passionate to avenues. Every day I either drive or ride for a beautiful driveway avenue, between home and my workplace. It’s about twenty kilometers long.

It could be even more nice if some of us planted a small tree where they’re missing and if it was registered to him.

I hope to be able to propose this project to my institution, through Google, to make it real, as soon as possible.

Thank you, if you help me realize my idea.

Location: I m Local Guide From Karachi, Pakistan.

What I usually do for helping the environment is:

I m a small contributor and a team member of #cleantheworld Project ,

I love to do Plantation in my City and trying to Fight against waste dump in oceans. Practically (by clean the beach rides) and by my articles in local Urdu Newspapers.

Is the environment part of your Local Guide experience?

Yes definitely, because as a local guide and representative & member of a great community of Local guides, we have double responsibility.
First we have to aware people about the dangerous impacts of pollution and secondly we have to show it by our practical work.
And here we tried both.

What about your experience in Local Guides Connect?

Local Guides Connect is a great place for making awareness about environment, hosting & joining environmental Meetups and writing something which you feel from inside.

By the great platform of Local Guides Connect , we orginized some very useful meetups .

1) Clean The Ormara Beach

2) Let’s Map Green (Plantation)

3) URDU- Local Guides Clean The World - A Local Guides Project (Urdu Translation)

4) Clean The Beach (Mir Pur Sakro)

5)Clean The World - Batu Ferringhi Beach Penang, Malaysia

With by dearest friend and a great Local guide @OmerAli .

6) [EDUCATION] Knowledge Sharing Meetup about Google Maps/LGC, Environment and Accessibility at Lincoln Corner

7) [EDUCATION] Knowledge sharing session about CTW campaign and Google maps at Kamran Public School

8) [EDUCATION] Knowledge sharing session about CTW Campaign and Google maps at Hussain Ebrahim Foundation School Karachi

What about the Earth Day?

I m fully agreed what our mentor @ErmesT said about earth Day :

My thought is that “Everyday is Earth Day”, every day is the day for caring about environment, every day is the right day. Planting a tree, recycling, cleaning reducing the use of plastic, reusing a product, is something that we can do everyday.

Because as we are using all free facilities from our mother nature, like free air, heat, food, water, and hundreds of sources which are necessary for living, we have to care our beautiful planet with same attitude, everyday, Everytime.

Do you think the Local Guides program can be improved about environment?

Yes Off course, there is many things to do for Google in this field. In my opinion, if we can indicate the places where we feel any environmental issue, we can imrpove more our environment. Like waste reportings, need of plantation, un necessary use of plastic bags, and many other issues like that.

Shukriya

We are volunteers on Local Guides @carlozeuli

All these project are started by us, inside the Local Guides Community of course, but powered and managed by us.

The three plantation program was started by @IlankovanT : Join Us for Free Rain. Many Local Guides followed his example, included @KashifMisidia and @FaridTDF

They for sure can give you some advice, and you need to find support locally, as to plant threes along a road you need a lot of permissions, and you need to create awareness locally

Great introduction @KashifMisidia

I really love your educational activity. I remember like if it was yesterday when we built an educational program together: How to - Education for teenagers

And it is nice to see the #LocalGuideCleanTheWorld Logo in the beach in Penang, Malaysia, with @OmerAli

You can see that @carlozeuli need some advice about trees plantation. Do you want to share your experience with him?

saludos Farid.

I am a Poet currently doing an Ebook collab with an artist and a friend from childhood, with the theme of nature running through it ! I have also been with Google Blogger since 2006 showcasing my nature photography over the many years!

Currently I use my Administrative skills in Retail and Hospitality but more so my mini marathon experience of over 13 years, as in the past 2 and a half years I find going from an administrative role to a physically demanding one can only be done if from a sport-y background and I currently have my own creative ‘column’ in one company as well as do the back up admin in another, and couching some top family of Local Guides in a group I am one of the Admins of.

What I usually do for helping the environment is:

I make regular visits to the area I have adopted through Ermes’ project, #LocalGuidesCleantheWorld and am happy to say that it is looking better than it has ever done after my 2 Meet ups!

Meet up no. 1 (Jan 2019):

Meet Up no. 2 (Mar 2019):

I am also part of a Wildlife Trust in London which has a good list of associated projects others can get involved in and one I help at adds greenery and plants to the park to help encourage wildlife and adds to the park’s overall aesthetic look.

Is the environment part of your Local Guide experience?

Yes, it is as my outlook has always been to find ways to add greenery to any part of the city wherever possible.

It’s been good since the beginning as I discovered the #LocalGuidesCleantheWorld project almost as soon as I joined the Local Guides Connect community and it has been the main reason for my Meetups.

I am working towards setting up my next Meet Up at a nature and wildlife event so that I can get everyone involved in doing something practical – if friends eventually turn up but at least I can make it a worthwhile day and that is important in this day and age where we are the last generation to see that this environmentally conscious approach to life is what should be on everyone’s mind, not tomorrow or next month.

What about your experience in Local Guides Connect?

I have done 2 Meet Ups for my Adopt an Area on the #LocalGuidesCleantheWorld project.

I am the French Translator for the project started by @Ermes

My most current French Translation post is:

Francais : Local Guides Clean The World is 2.0 now - The new project, waiting for 2020

The other posts relating to the earlier #LocalGuidesCleantheWorld project are:

Francais Waste reporting - on Google Maps

Francais - Local Guides Clean The World Step-1 Education

Français Local Guides clean the world - A Local Guides project

I write posts about my List of Shopping Areas that greenery and plants to the malls to increase awareness of integrating both the natural and city environment.

Top Shopping Malls with a Greener approach

Now plants are on high street with label Helping make {this area} a green and beautiful High Street

Wimbledon Shopping Precinct - Greenery surrounds

On Google Maps one of my listings relate to a Cleaner, Impressive, Greener list of Shopping Malls in and around London:

What about the Earth Day?

For me as this title indicates, Earth Day is every day, not just 22 April 2019.

I like to ensure litter is kept in bins not scattered everywhere so I keep my litter with me until I see a bin.

Here on Local Guides Connect I posted about my passion in seeing an improvement in the community:

I am passionate about making the community a better place to live in

Being a member of a Wildlife organisation, I take part in the planting and hedge planting days - the park now looks so much more appealing to families and in turn helps children understand why nature is important.

So, I live by the rule that if we care for the community in which we live, it naturally follows that we see improvements and that is what counts in today’s society. There may not be another time as Global Warming has led to Green Land and Iceland seeing snow melt at a faster pace than previously thought.

https://youtu.be/7P5ActMUjZE

Do you think the Local Guides program can be improved about environment?

I agree with Ermes that we can do a lot here on Local Guides Connect to help improve our perception of the environment and what we can do to help others become more aware of what we all need to do to ensure the next generation has at least somewhere they can call home.

At the moment, Greenland is melting rapidly and even in the winter time which is alarming for even us as it means rising sea levels and more flooding and disasters around the world.

Erme’s project, on Waste Reporting is the next step forward for everyone of us to look at and work on, locally:

Waste reporting - on Google Maps

We are making progress and that is what really matters!

Many many Congrats to us all in this welcoming project!
