Today, let’s come together to celebrate World Day for Assistive Technology ℹ️ & recognize the incredible tools that empower millions
.
Assistive technology refers to any item, piece of equipment, software program or product system that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities. It serves as a vital bridge to independence & accessibility for everyone, everywhere
.
A photograph of an informative assistive technology sign from the Museum of Art & Photography (MAP). This sign, captured in the photo, indicates that the exhibition provides an audio guide and that all label texts are available in Indian Sign Language (ISL) via the Bloomberg Connects app, which can be accessed by scanning the included QR code.
In our community, Google Maps itself serves as a powerful assistive technology, providing useful information that allows people with disabilities to navigate the world with greater confidence and independence
. It acts as a vital bridge to accessibility for everyone, everywhere.
Building on shared knowledge, the community has been doing incredible work highlighting the importance of accessibility through mapping and hosting meetups, including promoting International Day of Persons with Disabilities and celebrating Global Accessibility Awareness Day
(GAAD) 2026, where @RosyKohli reminded everyone that “Accessibility is more than a ramp”.

How to Contribute Assistive Technology on Google Maps
As Local Guides, there is power to improve digital accessibility. Based on past mapping projects, collective efforts make a significant impact. Contribute directly to making information about accessible venues more accurate:
- Add Helpful Media
: Take clear, high-quality photos & ensure you include captions for both the venue and the specific assistive technologies observed. - Write Detailed Reviews
: Share specific details about the accessibility of a location, including information about the specific assistive technology available for each accessibility feature provided. - Update Attributes
: Edit the accessibility attributes for a place on Google Maps as @Kumaarsantosh has guided.
