A Chronicle of Google Maps & Local Guides (2005–2025)

Google Maps and the Local Guides program are now deeply connected and almost inseparable. Every day, millions of people rely on Local Guides’ contributions to discover places, navigate roads, and make informed decisions.

But this ecosystem has a long and fascinating history.

In this archive post, I’m sharing a chronological journey of Google Maps, its supporting tools (both active and discontinued), the evolution of the Local Guides program, and the major summits and milestones that shaped our global community.

This post also highlights the early history of the first unofficial Local Guides community in Bangladesh.

This post is published as part of the Index of Bangladesh Local Guides, under the Archive Series, to preserve important historical references for current and future community members.

From Google Maps Maker to Road Mapper, City Experts to Local Guides, and from early official and unofficial communities to global summits, the Local Guides journey is a powerful example of how community-driven knowledge can shape the world’s most widely used mapping platform.

The Bangladesh Local Guides community, founded by Mahabub Hasan, as one of the earliest unofficial communities, has played an important role in this journey—through consistent contributions, community building, and long-term engagement.

This archive post aims to preserve these milestones and timelines so that both new and experienced Local Guides can better understand where we started and how far we’ve come.

Google+ had a section called Local, where users mainly wrote reviews. This existed before the option to write reviews directly on Google Maps was introduced, and it remained active until around 2016.

@ChamnanMuon Thank you for liking my writing. You can use the writing but don’t forget to give my name as the original author. Because to write this article, I had to study a lot for several months, check almost thousands of links, and cross-verify the content.I had to search through my collection of over 200,000 Google Photos images and select the images.
