Celebrating six years of creating memories together

Six years ago, we launched Connect to give Local Guides everywhere a place to come together and share their world through stories and Google Maps. It’s been an amazing journey for us, as we’ve gotten to know you, your passions, and your ideas for making Maps and Local Guides better for everyone.

But what was Connect like at the start? How can you enjoy it more today? Let’s take a trip down memory lane with some of our first Connect Moderators.

How did you discover Connect?

@iyudhi : I’ve been active since the program was still called City Experts. Then the program was changed into Local Guides, Connect was introduced, and I was invited to join the beta platform!

@ErmesT : By searching on the Internet. I was looking for the opportunity to talk to Google Maps about an idea I had. In 2016, an earthquake in centralItaly destroyed many places, and all the news used Street View to show what they looked like before. I thought that collecting such images could be useful for the reconstruction of the villages. Six years later, I added the new roads in the affected areas on Google Maps and shared the story on Connect.

@PaulPavlinovich : Before Connect, there were city-based communities on Google+, and I was a moderator for the officialMelbourne community. When Local Guides decided to move away from Google+, people wondered if this was the end. But no, it was just a new beginning.

What’s your first memory of Connect?

@KarenVChin : Connect 1.0 was what you call an old-fashioned online forum. There were no images; you would have to click on a post link to read and see photos and video links from a Local Guide. I remember how fast the topics would appear and the number of Local Guides responding to them. I thought it was cool that Local Guides from around the world could write and share about what was happening in their lives in their towns/cities. Connect was your opportunity to ask questions and learn about how other Local Guides live, work, and celebrate their holidays.

What has kept you coming back to Connect over the years?

@iyudhi : Getting to interact with Local Guides from all over the world and helping them with questions about Local Guides and Google Maps.

@FaridTDF : The great opportunity to exhibit myArgentina :argentina: and the unique language I can use to describe the places I discover thanks to Google Maps.

@KarenVChin : The Local Guides themselves. I use Connect as an educational platform and a gateway to the world. I have learned so much about Africa, the Middle East, and South-East Asia in the last six years. I’ve also made many lifelong friends that there is no way I would have met anywhere else. During the pandemic, I also learned new skills, like how to hostglobal virtual meet-ups.

@ErmesT : I decided to become an “ambassador” for my cityTreviso. Over the years, I’ve shared about my passion for the environment and accessibility, and learned to love new tools, like Google Earth, to the point where I got invited to the Google Outreach Summit as a panelist.

What would you say to someone who’s coming to Connect for the first time?

@FaridTDF : Get ready to meet people from places on the other side of the world.Language isn’t a barrier, so go ahead and say hello.

@PaulPavlinovich : Look around for a while, get a feel of the place and look at the different topics andHelp Desk articles.

Then think about how to positively contribute in a way that will be fun and make a difference to the world. The difference can be tiny, like making someone smile because you post something funny about your favorite place on Maps, or because you share some useful information or maybe start a meet-up.

Connect isn’t a social network, and attempting to use it like one is unsatisfying. Instead, join conversations, give other posts some love, and the same will flow back to you.

@ErmesT : Respect others and remember that this is a global community. It’s up to us to provide the details that will allow others to understand us.

Also, be patient. Most of the people who respond to you are volunteers who help others by sharing their knowledge. Sometimes they can’t answer right away, and sometimes you may not like the answer they give you. What they often share is not their opinion but simply the rules of the community and the program.

Local Guides, what is your first memory of Connect? Share it below, and tag a Local Guide friend you’ve met here!

Hello @Ority

Thank you for this nice post helping us to go down memory lane. Happy 6th birthday to connect as well. A high 5 to all of you moderators and local guides.

My first memory of connect was Wow !!! I had just gotten my first perks a pair of socks and that inspired me to want to contribute the more seeing someone appreciates my effort. I stumbled upon connect and I immediately loved the forum. I started to look for local guides in my local area to interact with. I got connected to so many of them. I can’t write this without tagging @TusharSuradkar we clicked as good buddies but that was before he became a moderator.Lol. @Austinelewex was very helpful and the friendship has become even more than local guides @Zino we met at a virtual meet up and a first meet-up of local guides in Abuja @MukulR we are still good buddies he inspires me alot.just to mention a few we clicked those days on connect.

I have since met other wonderful local guides, buddies and even kind and helpful moderators.

Thank you Google,Thank you moderators Thank you fellow local guides. Love you all

Cheers

Thanks @Ority for this amazing post!

Happy 6th Birthday Connect! :tada: :tada: :tada:

I’m very happy to be a part of this vibrant community from the starting :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:.

There are so many memorable moments that I have had through this global community that I don’t have enough words to express.

But I would like to share with you a glimpse of how we celebrated the 6th Birthday of Connect.

Here is the my recap post. Hope you like it.

Regards,

Naresh

Wishing Connect a very Happy 6th birthday.

My first memory i get this i was all new on the connect and i really dint know how to use so I tried my 1st food post and i really got lot of good comments on my post. Slowly and steadily i learnt how to post an article how to post pictures some of my post also been discarded but that’s ok i learnt.

Till today I have posted 102 article on connect and going to continue more and more about my travel experience with all my lg fellas :grinning: :grinning:

I have made new friends like** @NareshDarji **he is a gem of a person who always stood in support for any help.

We recently had a great meet-up organised by him.

Connect has become daily part of my life and i have learnt a lot of things from here.

Thank you @Ority for the updates

Thanks for this post and for sharing a bit of my story, @Ority

Fun Fact: in the same days when Connect was born, I started my journey as a Local Guide.
a fantastic journey, to which I have never stopped contributing, week after week, in these six long years, until I reach what, even if it is not an absolute record, is certainly my personal best: 312 weeks (at the end of June 2022) of contributions without any interruption

Connect has helped me to build solid friendships all over the world, friendships that have led me to meet “in person” Local Guides from the most diverse countries. As an “ambassador” of my city, I made Treviso the destination of many European Local Guides

Thanks to all those who have joined Connect in these six years, and thanks to those who have not yet arrived, but who will do so in the coming days / months, giving us the opportunity to grow even more.

Wow!!! 6 great years of learning together. I still remember my first interaction with Connect, when I was searching for more places to write an angry review for a pizza restaurant after writing on Google maps & other social media pages ? that was May 2017.

But then I realized, that forum is something, which can connect the world. Just fall in love with Connect from then on.

Here I met some great friends, who are now like family to me. I can’t tag more than 10 people here, but I want to tag my friends those are beautiful gifts of Connect for me @JaneBurunina , @Kwiksatik , @TusharSuradkar @NareshDarji

@ErmesT @AdrianLunsong @Muhammad_Usma, Globe_trotter_Isha,

@KarenVChin , OmerAli, @StephenAbraham ,TravellerG and hundreds of more friend

So, Happy Birthday Connect, May you have many more :thought_balloon: :thought_balloon: :tada: :tada: :tada: :tada:

Thanks @Ority it’s nice to go down memory lane with fellow Local Guide brothers and sisters :slightly_smiling_face:

My first memory here like I’m sure it is for many others, I was a little overwhelmed by it all. However, with the help of so many older folks here, it didn’t take too long to get my feet on the ground :slightly_smiling_face: Now (according to my profile) having read some 930,000 messages, posted some 12,500 messages, replied some 11,700 times and started 295 posts, I think my feet are firmly placed here. I have to add, so much so that someone very close and dear to me, think that my feet are stuck on the ground here :joy:

Now one BIG positive of it all is that I’ve met hundreds and have made countless friends from all over the world and have invitations from oh so many to visit them :slightly_smiling_face: There are just too many to name but you know who you are  Now for one small positive, I’ve learned how to use spreadsheets :joy:  :sunglasses:

Happy Birthday Connect !!!

@Ority
