One of the requirements to apply for Connect Live 2018 is to submit a 1-minute video in which you appear on camera, speak about why you’d like to attend.

To help you create a video that shows you in the best light (pun intended), we reached out to our friends in the YouTube Contributors program, who are a group of passionate volunteers that help YouTube become a better platform for users through answering questions on the help forum or Twitter or by creating YouTube help videos.

YouTube Creator Kate from Kate’s Adventures made an excellent video with tips for capturing the best footage and incorporating your adventures as a Local Guide into your application video.

Below are some highlights from Kate’s video:

  • Equipment: Any camera, including your smartphone’s camera, is OK
  • Lighting: While filming outdoors in natural light is best, filming indoors is OK, too, as long as you’re in a well-lit area
  • Filming outside: If you do film outside, be aware of the background sounds, including wind. Talk loudly and clearly, and keep the microphone close when talking and filming scenery.
  • Visuals: Show what’s around you but don’t forget to tell viewers what they are looking at, and be specific about what’s being shown

Check out Kate’s other tips for preparing to film videos, too.

Remember, you don’t need fancy equipment or special effects, just be yourself!

It's been rainy for days here in Buenos Aires, so I had to do it indoors... I tried not to make it too dull, due to my accent and lack of interaction or movement in the background

I tried to make my Connect Live Application video an opportunity to pass on some useful 360 video and audio tips. I am a big fan of spatial audio (360 audio) which is supported on YouTube. 360 sounds add to the impact of the video and, as you look around, the sound source alters just as it would if you were standing where the camera is located.

I also used the opportunity to incorporate the animated gifs that have been shown to promote Connect Live. Not all video editing programs recognise animated gifs and I didn't know how they would come out if included in a 360 video. I converted the animated gifs into MP4 clips using Movavi software and made the final video in Adobe Premiere Pro as it supports 360 audio.

The video was recorded with a Ricoh Theta V with the spatial audio microphone

I deliberately recorded my introductory video outside in my garden near the pond so you can hear running water and the sound of birds whilst you look around the garden.

The final tip when using 360 video in YouTube is to use closed captions instead of overlaid text because the text narative stays in view throughout the video wherever you look.

The intro video about me is shown below with these tips incorporated and I would be interested if anyone can offer additional tips - make sure you wear headphones when you watch the video and try looking around the garden.

@Jenproject01 Most importantly, the post should define you and/or your experience with Local Guides. As with all posts on Connect, you should publish your post on the most relevant board. Boards include General Discussion, Travel and Advice, Let’s Meet-Up!, Share Your Photos and Discoveries, Photography, and Mapping Your World. The Connect post you include in your application should define you and/or your experience with Local Guides. The post must be written in English and can be something new or previously published on Connect. Best of luck!

Please also review our five core values and our Tips: Using Local Guides Connect! 🤗 Your introduction on the April thread could double as your Connect submission on the Connect Live application if you so choose, but please feel free to write anything that defines you and/or your experience with Local Guides.

I got a lot of emails from our local guide brothers about the one minute video. There is a lot of samples in YouTube, you can see them and try to do not dramatically, be cool and say something about you to the camera.

I wish you all of you to get a chance
