How to identify and report fraud on Google Maps

Googler

UPDATE: As of June 11, 2020, we now have a new process in place for reporting abusive activity on Google Maps. You can report entire profiles on Google Maps from your mobile device. Read this post to learn more.

Have you ever come across a place on Google Maps that doesn’t really exist? How about a place with incorrect details that look suspicious? These edits violate the Google My Business guidelines and Local Guides guidelines, and they’re considered fraud.

People post fraud on Google Maps for the sake of profit-generating scams, which hurt legitimate businesses and make Maps less useful for everyone. You can help fight spam by reporting violations.

Maps listings with keywords in their address fieldsMaps listings with keywords in their address fields

.:: How do I identify fraud on Google Maps? Look for the following.

  • Businesses that list a P.O. Box, post office or virtual office as an address. A business needs to have a real-world address to be listed on Google Maps. Virtual offices and shared workspaces are acceptable if they’re staffed during typical business hours, but be aware that using these types of places as addresses is a popular fraud technique. P.O. Boxes are OK in countries where they are essential, such as Kenya and the U.A.E.
  • Online-only businesses. Online businesses that don’t meet customers face-to-face are not eligible to be on Maps.
  • Businesses that don’t exist. If a business is on Maps but is not real, it should be reported.
  • Businesses that use employees’ addresses. The scam here is to make it appear that the business has locations in places where it doesn’t actually operate. If you see a business that seems to be in a purely residential area, this might be the reason.
  • Keyword “stuffing.” If you see search terms “stuffed” into place names or address fields, that’s a sign of a fraudulent listing.
  • Fake websites or phone numbers. For example, a fraudulent hotel listing might include a hotel booking site instead of a site for an individual business. If a business’s site seems broken or distributes malware, that’s a sign of a fraudulent listing.
  • Business impersonators: Some people create fake listings for real businesses, such as national chains. If you think a listing might be fraudulent, check the brand’s official site to see its legitimate locations.
  • Reviews that point out abuse. Sometimes, people will notice a fraudulent listing and note it in a review.
  • Profanity. Sometimes, people will deface legitimate listings with edits that include foul language.
  • Illegal businesses: If a business is illegal where it operates, it can’t be on Google Maps.

.::How do I report fraud on Google Maps?

  1. Find the business on Google Maps
  2. Scroll down and select Suggest an edit
  3. Tap Place is permanently closed or has never existed
  4. Select Spam, fake or offensive as the reason
  5. Tap Submit

.::Reporting a Local Guide

If you've found a Local Guide contributing content or behaving in a way that seems to violate our policies or Local Guides program rules, you now have the ability to report these profiles directly in the Google Maps app. In order to do so, click on the user name in the list of Reviews/Photos they contributed or the Question/Answer they posted to get to their profile page. Once on their profile page, click on the three dot icon. Choose ‘Report’ from the menu on iOS or ‘Report profile’ on Android. For additional information, read this post.

.::Reporting spammed, fake, or duplicate prominent locations to Google Moderators

There are certain prominent places which Local Guides can’t edit in Google Maps, such as cities, towns, rivers, natural formations, and more. If you come across a spammed, fake or duplicate location for which you cannot submit an edit or your edit is automatically rejected, let us know in a comment below. Make sure to tag a Google Moderator and provide the following details:

  • Google Maps URL of the location (Eg: https://goo.gl/maps/qAZfCWDfZzoqchHL9);
  • What’s wrong with the place? Is it spammed, fake, or duplicate?
  • Which is the wrong information? Is it the name, category, or contact information?
  • What should the correct information be? Tell us the original name of the place in English and in the local language (if applicable), the right category (Zoo, Museum, etc.), and the correct contact information (official website, address, phone number, etc.).

hi, i have absolutely no idea how local guide works nor do i have time to read all helpfiles - i only like to report a local guide who dishes out 5-star-ratings like candies because he is ceo of an app promoting different business - more so it sucks that he is using writings taken from the specific websites, means he never has been there, his fulltime-job is promoting only for money

what do you??

@iambenlaw Is it the language gap or hate material?

i've seen sometimes people struggle with languages because they are not native speakers

Level 3

should be "what to do?" 🙂

@OmerAli

I wish it was. This local guide I reported said things like "ugly b*" or "lazy and stupid". In my email to support, I literally gave over 30 quotes and which business the review was for. It is true anger unfortunately.

Level 6

A mod will need to pm you with email address to use to report. @BruceDM can you help out @Mythos57 please.

@iambenlaw

Omg, that is obscene and unacceptable.

Clearly someone is fueling up one's personal vendetta. Glad you did the right thing.

I honestly believe at this stage, Google Maps needs Quality control more than contributions.

I have seen many people reviewing just to get a point. Infact, random pictures, hitting stars, copy/paste same review for every other business is becoming a common practice now, which is so unfortunate.

I guess Google must also pick some watchdog squad to at least flag such content so that mods can later take action.

@BruceDM @ArielleM_ @TraciC @ErmesT , please have your say

I believe that Spam and bad contents is one of the first target @OmerAli,

BTW, please do not tag too many people (moderators) to come here. I would like to let them work

Level 6

@OmerAli I agree, there needs to be better quality control. For the guide I reported, I'm pretty sure if I posted the examples I sent to Google here, post would be taken down or flagged. There were clearly inappropriate keywords that could be flagged for review. My email listed no less than 30 examples from about 30 different businesses this person reviewed. There must be some system that can flag it for review and then flag the account for review if that person has X number of occurrences.

@ErmesT

Noted.

I am a fan of Google's span filters (at least I have observed that in emails) they work just fine.

We are talking about 'deliberate spam' and 'bad content'. I know keyword filtering has been on boards and forums for like teo decades now, but what if someone deliberately wants to mock someone down?

It was just a thought though

@Mythos57 - please stand by while I share further instructions with how to report a Local Guide.

It's true that if you go through the posts on different board regarding different issues , you will  differently   have  a comprehensive idea . Those past links are not only helpful but also highly interesting.

Hello,

So frequently I see reviews about someone rating a business or placed based on something that has nothing to do with the actual place. I recently discovered an actual level 5 contributor and all his reviews are not actual reviews. Things like:

4 stars: "Massages are nice. Can I have one?" "

3 stars: Wanted to work there, but without a car, it would have been impossible to get to."

1 star: "They wouldn’t hire me because I was too qualified."

Now I know it would be a slippery slope to consider ourselves keyboard warriors and police who is saying something productive and who isn't, but at the same time, I feel like this is detrimental to the common goal of leaving useful, factual information.

When we see something like this, is there a way to report it or have it reviewed? I tried looking into it but couldn't find anything on the matter here on the boards or on google.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Hi,

I also want to report fake local guide in Croatia

Most of reviews are 1 *, and as we are living in small city we know people who are visiting our business. SO this local user guide is fake!

Can someone please contact me so I can give them the details?

Thanks!

Hello, my business received a 4 star review by a Local Guide that never called my business for a quote and was never my client. Until this 4 star review, I was 5 stars with 18 reviews. How do I report the Local Guide and get the review off my reviews?

A so-called "GOOGLE LOCAL GUIDE" who is clearly just a kid from the neighbourhood placed a fake review. The kid can never have been a customer and the picture (horrible picture with halloween  mask) was taken in a toy store NOT in my business! I am a small business owner and I will not have this! It is not ok that anyone (even a kid) can sign up as a "Local Guide" and post something absolutely false.  This hurts my business.  Google, take appropriate action. Remove the picture and remove the review! A S A P!

Level 6

Hello @GinBi,

Did you report the photo as inappropriate? The official way to remove photos is by reporting it as inappropriate.

Anyway a Google employee can review the profile of this Local Guide. @Ivi_Ge can do that for us.

Level 1

@TraciC see above please.

Level 1

Hi @Wizzard,

Yes I reported the photo and review but nothing happened.

Believe me, it is not just a mistake, but intentional. As mentioned before: the picture was not taken at my place. I do not have a toy store.   It's clearly a bored kid. The fake one star rating and picture of a horror masked kid next to my name is very bad for my business. Believe me, this really needs no further investigation. Why wasn't it removed by Google after I flagged it?!?

Is there a way to send an email to this person to kindly ask him to remove it?  @Ivi_Ge

Level 10

Hi @GinBi sorry for what happened, but this has to be discussed in GMB support boards: https://www.en.advertisercommunity.com/t5/Google-My-Business/ct-p/GMB

Anyway, the correct procedure to follow is to report the review and related images.

Sorry @LucioV,

I did not notice you were not a Googler because I am so fed up with this. So in that case: thx very much for your advise!

A LG recently reviewed a business I know and gave a 1-star review that was unrelated to the business (it was a building issue where the business is a tenant).

In looking at their other reviews, I found dozens of 1-star reviews that are all of one business across dozens of branch locations. The posting times are all the same. This person clearly just posted these due to a perapers grudge.

I could report each individually, but it's clearly a bigger issue with this particular LG.

Are there any moderators who can help?

Hi I would like to report a level 10 spammer. 27000 stock photo uploads from every corner of the earth. I really don't understand why people are allowed to use stock photos, copy and pastes from other online reviews and then multiple, and I mean sometimes as many as 20 of the same pictures for different random locations. Many of us actually try and contribute with our own experiences and the points are a nice little bonus as a way to see progress, and then you see people blatantly flaunting the rules which google don't pick up on. Sometimes google don't publish my pictures when I can't see anything that violates policy, yet seem to be more than happy to publish what is clearly a spam account multiple times over. Anyway... rant over. It just winds me up is all! Sorry for the moan.

Ok. Thank you very very much.

I have to go, my battery is low.

Thanks again, for reaching out.

I reported a company who was not really local and they suspended an account I had a while ago that I had for over 4 years. All I was doing was reporting that they were not really based in las vegas but were out of california and they still suspended my account.

Hi @GeorgesHR,

When i found the spam locations, i try to remove those locations after few days they are creating some more with different names, but keeping the same phone numbers and also found that the people who reviewed the locations also fake reviews.
