Building a community of Local Guides

@NeerajKumarIndia it is true that the attendee needs to fund their initial visa application, but that is reimbursed, while some people would struggle with that, they do get that money back - in past years the visa applications have been paid up front but this caused different problems (bank transfers, taxes, etc.) - there isn't an easy answer here and both alternatives have their challenges - there have been cases where some LG have had to travel several hours to do their visa application and in those cases those people had some money provided in advance - those that need it should mention it give the organisation that is Google the opportunity to help

@ErmesT I am pleased to watch your Clean The World community grow over time as it has a lasting positive benefit on our planet and people and emergency mapping - these are magnificent movements and you are to be congratulated

@RenataH oh absolutely I miss the Connect Live family - we're only together for two and a half days but we really do form a kind of family, some like siblings, some like cousins, aunts, uncles, etc, some even like a couple - all we can do is try to retain contact over the distances and to do our best to come to the positive notice of the choosers so we can come again next year

Great write up @PaulPavlinovich! Certainly a problem shared by many of use who started out under City Experts and then inherited the unofficial Local Guides community, when plans shifted at Google.

And as @MariaNgo pointed out, there are always going to be pros and cons to 'perks' and finding the right balance of rewarding active members.

Your vision for Connect sounds exciting Paul. Looking forward to seeing more new local features play out. 👍👍 As for challenge, can you remember before you found out about Maps community? How awesome was it for you to first find out we're all in it together? There's many people you haven't met yet who are going to be glad to know you one day 😃

No se como se me pasó este gran post @PaulPavlinovich, tarde un poco en leer las cuatro páginas que ya tiene, pero valió la pena, cada una de las distintas respuestas son valiosas y dan una mirada interesante a este tema que me apasiona, las Comunidades Local Guides. 

Para empesar como de costumbre jajaja, es un agradecimiento a quien me introdujo en esto de las 

Comunidades LG, a Jose Eschenone, un gran luchador que fomentó la creación de la primera Comunidad no oficial en la Argentina, la de Buenos Aires y luego me incentivará a crear la de Comunidad no oficial de Tierra del Fuego, el devenir de la vida y los acontecimientos hizo que adminístrara las dos Comunidades LG, el me enseñó mucho, lo mismo que hizo en su momento Luis Rodríguez, en darme tips para mejorar la Comunidad.

Bueno no todas son flores con perfumes, hay muchas rosas con espinas y precisamente es como bien cuentas tú Paul sobre tu experiencia, con la Comunidad de Melbourne, la participación no es constante y muchos de los que participan siempre están consultando que ganó con todo esto, es un eterno tira y afloja, de esfuerzo contra beneficio obtenido. Creo que los beneficios están en lo que tú describiste Paul, muchos son intangibles, en un primer momento, pero son reales a la hora de dialogar, entablar amistades, yo ni en un millón de años hubiera, sido capaz de conocerte jajaja si no es por el programa de Local Guides o por participar en uno de los 36 PhotoWak, pero este año te conocí charle contigo y eso es impagable, ya que estoy seguro que la próxima vez que te lea o tú propongas algo saldré rápidamente para participar en tu propuesta, me pasa lo mismo con otros LG.

Pero regresando al punto. administrar la Comunidad no es fácil y G+ no llegó a tener  todas las herramientas que necesita una Comunidad, Connect tiene algunas, está en proceso de evolución, le falta un largo camino para la madurez, no es fácil tampoco, el proyecto está creciendo de una manera casi explosiva y equilibrar eso es muy complejo.

Con respecto a los beneficios. Y a la consulta de si los aportes tienen que ser en contrapartida de un beneficio específico, espero que nunca cambie eso, es un no rotundo, eso desvirtuará ostensiblemente el programa y se entrará en una competencia sin freno por esos beneficios en detrimento de la calidad de los aportes al centro del proyecto que son los mapas de Google. Los cuales tienen que seguir siendo realizados por voluntad propia y por qué te gusta. Es verdad que me gustan los beneficios que ofrecen como son los helados, algunos viajes gratis en algunas zonas, pero tienen que ser eso, ya que si son de gran envergadura, se corre el riesgo de que se desvirtúe el objetivo de lo que es ser un Local Guides, los valores de un Local Guides. Lo pudimos experimentar de alguna manera con Connect 1.0, y solamente eran puntos, vistas  y algunas insignias. Por suerte Connect 2.0 llevo equilibrio entre esas dos fuerzas. 

En general creo creo que las Comunidades como concepto de G+ no las veremos más, las Comunidades que se crean en Facebook u otras redes sociales, mmm 🤔 creo que tampoco prosperarán, no tiene la tracción suficiente par que lleguen a ser una verdadera Comunidad Local Guides, creo que la propuesta que nos da LocalGuidesConnect es la mejor por el momento, es un ámbito de participación mundial donde de una u otra manera todos podemos hablar, realizar encuentros, contar historias, leer sobre información técnica, etc, por supuesto le falta muchísimo, pero están haciendo esos cambios, solo tenemós que tener paciencia y por supuesto usar el tablón de Ideas Exchange, para proponer lo que deseamos ver a en Connect. Cuando alguno de los Local Guides me consulta por MP, como ser un Moderador o como llegar a Connect Live o como hice lo que hice, la respuesta es muy corta y específica participando, creo que no hay otro secreto.

Comprendo el punto de vista cuando dicen esto es a costo mío, si es verdad pero los hobby son así, lo que te gusta  no te cuesta lo haces por placer, no es un trabajo es una distracción un pasatiempo, y por supuesto está el punto de vista del altruismo, es una gran palabra usada y en ocaciones no comprendida bien, ayudar al otro sin esperar nada a cambio es muy lindo, no todos lo pueden practicar, por razones culturales, de mandato social, etc. Pero una vez que lo practicas dentro de tu esfera de participación, se siente muy bien.

I really like the way Connect 2.0 is coming together @FaridTDF and I think with the improvements around language that are being introduced now we take the next steps towards a blend of local and global communities. I'm hoping to see more location based features so I can see things that are near me. We're in for a grand ride and I'm confident that the Googlers we associate with are genuinely interested in the views of any Local Guide who takes a moment to put their thoughts into writing. Obviously they can't make everyone happy, but they can collect feedback and identify strong trends and determine the roadmap from that.

Dear Paul, hope all's well. You're right to discuss community building. Another aspect is team and working together for common goals. Happy teams have good leaders, so the best you can do for your team is be a good leader. All good leaders are following good leaders. That's one of the beautiful attributes of Local Guides Connect, it allows Local Guides to find each other. The leadership on Connect, the Googlers and moderators, are great people, always helpful, kind and generous with their time. Watching and learning how they build up Local Guides globally is an excellent example for us to follow locally. Kind regards from Osaka78 Ps as you say, it's always fun 😃
