Introduction:
When it comes to media contributions on Google Maps, video has clearly become the new frontier. Therefore, measuring and analysing their impact compared to that of fellow Local Guides, especially our peers, can help us improve the “quality” of our video contributions. This is precisely what this post is all about.
The post consists of a series of leaderboards dedicated to showcasing the videos of participating Local Guides from over a 100 countries and you can also join in. You don’t have to be a “top gun” Level 10 Local Guide with a mega million views to participate! So, whether you’re an entry level Local Guide or from a small country, town or village, or a top level Local Guide from London, New York or New Delhi, you can participate and showcase your video shooting prowess, and it’s simple to do! If you want to jump on board, simply hit this link or just leave a comment below and someone will jump in to assist you.
Is this just a competition?
While there is an inherent competitive element within them, the Leaderboards are more than just seeing who has the “best” photos or videos, or the most photo or video views, far from it! They have been specifically designed to motivate us, help us to monitor our contributions and performance, and show us how to improve and make better contributions so that we achieve better results, and all in a fun and friendly way. So if you haven’t as yet, join in and enjoy!
If you’re new here then you may not be aware that this post forms part of a series of leaderboard posts each covering different aspects of the contributions made to Google Maps by Local Guides from all over the world. To see an index to these leaderboard and related posts, simply hit this link.
Readme - How to Read the Video leaderboards (June, 2025)
Briefly, this is what you need to know about the leaderboards in this post. For more details see the leaderboard documentation and the Leaderboard System’s online context-sensitive help information.
The leaderboards in this post present details about the video views of hundreds of participating Local Guides from all over the world. As well as an overall leaderboard ranking the top 100 Local Guides by video views, you will see leaderboards for different Local Guide levels which provide you with direct comparisons of your video views achievements with that of your peers. There’s also a leaderboard that shows the top 100 Local Guides ranked by the Average Views/Video which gives a good indication of the overall “quality” of all videos taken by each Local Guide. This is simply calculated by dividing the Local Guide’s total video views value (impact) by the number of contributed videos (volume). Of course. the use of the term “quality” here refers to the attractiveness of the videos to the Google AI and the viewing public.
Where shown, [ ] around leaderboard sequence numbers indicate that this is the first time that the Local Guide has participated on the Top 100 Local Guides leaderboards.
Where shown, ( ) around leaderboard sequence numbers indicate that this Local Guide levelled up/down onto this leaderboard.
An asterisk (*) shown after a Connect Username indicates that that Local Guide is a Connect Moderator.
Double asterisks (**) shown after a Connect Username indicates that that Local Guide is a Googler.
Hovering over a Local Guide’s username will display the ID number used to integrate that Local Guide’s details on the Leaderboards System and Connect; the umbilical chord if you will between the two disparate systems.
Selecting a Connect Username will take you to that Local Guide’s Connect Profile.
Local Guides whose Maps profile is set to private are excluded from the Leaderboards.
A ? or the words “Not set” in a cell indicates that the respective value hasn’t been provided by or cannot be determined for the respective Local Guide.
The data for the leaderboards in this post was read at 0300 on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 (UTC).
If you’re a participating Local Guide you must check the leaderboards for any errors or omissions and if you find any, then please add the details in a comment on this post. Regarding omissions, please note point 9 above.
Welcome to the new participants in the video Leaderboards and it’s great to see the numbers here on the increase.
Some brief observations:
@abermans continues to lead the way but sadly quite a few are not updating their data and others have hidden their Maps profiles.
The barrier to entry onto the overall Top 100 has increased by approx 400K views, a big margin!
Adopting the same approach as in the points and photo views leaderboards, the 10 Million Video Views Club has been amalgamated into the overall Top 100.
As mentioned here, we recently started streamlining the Leaderboards, eliminating some and amalgamating where we can. This reduces the number of boards needing to be prepared and posted, and less individual boards for everyone to check for accuracy. You will recall that because of the lack of numbers and lack of updating, the Top 100 Star 360 Spheres leaderboards were rested in December 2024 and I’m seriously thinking that the numbers that are not updating their video data will deliver the same fate to the Video Leaderboards further reducing the number of boards and that need preparing, posting and checking. What do you think?
If participating in LBs, why participants are restricting their profile from public view? One should be open and transparent with the co-participants here and participate as per the guidelines provided here for the LBs:
Thanks @AdamGT for re-iterating and giving them yet another chance to get the basics corrected.
Absolutely @Annaelisa. Actually we as a participant just have to verify the data and hardly we are required to update barring some exceptions and Star data.
Top 100 system is becoming easier and easier and more informative over a period of time. I am just loving it.
Thanks for the Video Boards, @AdamGT. If we keep accumulating new players like this every month, they’ll push out the folks who don’t update! Still, it’d be nice to have our Maps profile distinguish the types of views in a basic dashboard, rather than having to get into badge data…
That’s part of the problem @JustJake and @AdamGT. I objected when video leaderboards were created, because in Google Maps there’s no such thing. There’s just Photos and Reviews. Picking video information out of overall photo information didn’t make sense to me. BUT as a non-mobile-oriented person, I still learned how to use the mobile app badges to facilitate this process, and I find it really easy to do when needed each month. So I remain on board as long as it is kept going. At this point, I wouldn’t vote to stop it.
Thank you @AdamGT for all your hard work and for making this better. @LightRich, cover photo is just beautiful.
So glad to see 11 new participants. Welcome to the Top 100.
Since Google is focusing more on video, I think it’s a good idea to keep the video Leaderboards. I hope more Local Guides will participate in video LBs.
