Shibuya Scramble Crossing in Japan - A Goosebumps Experience

The Shibuya Scramble Crossing in Japan is an incredible street crossing experience.

The idea of crossing with thousands of people at a time from all walks of life is unthinkable.

When I was here last October, I noticed some taking pictures, some people kissing, while others just soaking in all the lights. Goosebumps…!

Some tips from my experience:

  • Please try not to get caught in the middle of the street when the lights turn green.
  • The timings are set to 45 seconds. Keep that in mind if you’re planning on taking pictures.

What sets this street crossing apart is the fact that it’s a massive 6 or 7 street intersection area where all traffic lights turn red at the same time to let pedestrians cross any way they want.

The Shibuya Crossing was launched in 1973 and has been highlighted in various movies and series.

Unfortunately, tourists like me do not always know how to go, and it becomes chaotic. In the evening, especially on the weekend, the area turns into one big party place.

I crossed this several times over 3 days of stay in Tokyo, since it was on my way to the Google office building from my hotel.

Here’s a less busy view in the morning.

Finally, here’s the Shibuya Crossing at night from the top of the Shibuya Building.

Images looks awesome by the way. For me, even though street photography is much appreciated, your simple photography looks stunning and relaxing to look at.

Also does thats traffic signals have options for pedestrians to activate a button for crossing?

Thank you for sharing with us your travel experiences and images @TusharSuradkar.

Thank you, dear @Rahul001, for your sincere and generous appreciation, which helps me keep going :hugs:

Good question. No, I did not notice any such facility. The signals are fixed at 45 seconds, and everyone must ensure crossing within that time.

The photos are really stunning. 45 seconds is very less time to cross the road for the photographers .

Thank you for showing us the Shibuya crossing virtually through your photos. @TusharSuradkar

Wow, Mr. @tusharsuradkar, visiting the iconic Shibuya Scramble Crossing is an incredible experience! It’s like watching organized chaos, with thousands crossing from all directions. Did you get a chance to capture that famous aerial view, or maybe spot the Hachiko statue nearby? I’d love to know if you explored the vibrant Shibuya streets or tried any local treats. Your journey sounds amazing!

The Shibuya Crossing must be a thrilling experience. To see so many people crossing the huge intersection at the same time, amazing! I think they covered this place in the movie Fast and Furious : Tokyo Drift. Thank you for sharing @TusharSuradkar

This must be the second most famous crossing in the world after wagha border crossing, :joy::+1:t2: just joking.

Nice pics, @TusharSuradkar .

Cheers!

Thank you, @NandKK :+1: and I agree, for such a huge crossing and with so much excitement, 45 seconds is far too less.
Yet, many tourists make the mistake of stopping in the middle of the road to take photos, which should be avoided. Mostly people do whatever while continuously walking

Yes, some of the best views of the crossing are from the top, and I was able to take one at the right moment from the Shibuya Observation Deck.

The best peaceful time to be spent at the Shibuya Cross is admiring the Hachiko Dog

Yes, I explored the streets of the Shibuya area a lot by walking around in the major and minor bylanes as well.

Also, the street food in the Shibuya area is amazing.
Plenty of food trucks are seen on the roadside:
