Recap: [In-Person] India, October 01, Celebrate International Day of Older Persons with Me - Age Friendly Meetup ✨

Hy Local Guides,

I am thrilled to share the recap of today’s meetup, celebrating International Day of Older Persons with the theme : Celebrating & Promoting Age Friendliness on Google Maps!

This meetup adds a special place on the “Celebrate with Me” series as we celebrate the day as a meetup.

Our Sustainable Journey :recycling_symbol:!

Our fellow @SarathUpendran joined me at the historic State Central Library and travelled towards LuLu Mall, Largest Mall in India :india: for contributing towards Accessibility :wheelchair_symbol:, Sustainability :recycling_symbol: and Inclusivity on Google Maps. With the phrase : “contribute towards a better future” in mind, we travelled between locations on Uber to reduce collective CO2 emissions.

Spotting Age Friendliness & Inclusivity :sparkles:!

Our meetup was to record and contribute features that make space truly age friendly which means they are welcome, safe and accessible to everyone (regardless of their gender, age or backgrounds), especially older persons. As Age Friendliness is an Inclusive term, we documented and contributed inclusive designs at the mall :

  • Priority signs -

Priority signs seen at lift :elevator: for elders, ladies and kids.

  • Prayer :place_of_worship: and feeding rooms :woman_feeding_baby: for women -

The feeding room can be seen next to the ladies bathroom :women_s_room: at the mall. The prayer room for women allows only women and no photography :no_mobile_phones: was allowed in front of it.

  • Wheelchair Accessible Bathrooms :water_closet: -

Wheelchairs :wheelchair_symbol: are present at the entrance of the mall with staff present to help for any assistance. At the entrance, there’s a bathroom where men :men_s_room: and women :women_s_room: with wheelchair accessible bathrooms are situated in one corridor but after that wheelchair accessible :water_closet: bathrooms are present in each men and women section.

  • Baby Stroller :baby_symbol: -

Baby Strollers :baby_symbol: are present at the entrance of the mall.

  • Sustainability :recycling_symbol: -

Waste bins :litter_in_bin_sign: for dry, wet, metal, glass, plastic or paper waste are placed at each corner of the mall.

Sarath and I had a great chai at Selfie tea, inside the mall. Even though the name suggests the word selfie, we forgot to take our selfie or group photo as we were talking about how to have better contributions on inclusivity and adding roads.

We celebrated this inclusive day with Chai Pe Charcha of @TusharSuradkar by having a cup of tea :teapot: together.

These contributions help us to better contribute towards age friendliness and Inclusivity on Google Maps. Not just ramps but a thoughtful design that helps and supports everyone’s ability to navigate and participate in their daily lives.

Here’s my review for the mall!

Thank you Sarath for attending this meetup and @TravellerG for initiating Age Friendliness to our community.

See you all on next meetup!

Absolutely wonderful way to celebrate this important day. Accessibility, Inclusivity and sustainability features all in a single place, that’s really amazing. And to finish off the eventful day with chai pe charcha is just perfect. I have heard a lot about Lulu Mall, will visit it soon one day. Thanks for the wonderful share @Rahul001

Nicely curated post covering all details @Rahul001

Totally understandable, dear @Rahul001 and @SarathUpendran

Your focus and dedication towards sustainability, inclusivity, and accessibility features stand out from the selfie addits :handshake:

I too, almost have no selfies or photos at a place to show

Thank you immensely for a thought-provoking and informative post.
I often see reserved seats on the city bus out here in Pune, and also here is one from Detroit.

This is fantastic @Rahul001 .. Lulu mall is nice and congratulations for your successful “chai pe charcha” session.

Yes, dear @Rahul001,
Age-friendliness is a very ‘Inclusive’ term.
As a senior citizen, I have found that this term is applicable to babies or an eighty years old person.
Thanks for mentioning me in your cover photo and in the post.
I fully agree with your points mentioned in the post.
Most sincerely ,
