On this Safe Motherhood Day 👩🏻, we celebrate the strength of mothers and advocate for the safety, care & accessibility
they deserve in every corner of our world. As Local Guides
, we play a vital role in this by mapping the world through a lens of care. During Age-Friendly Meetup, we saw firsthand how crucial women-friendly features are for comfort at every stage of life. When we document these amenities, we aren’t just adding data; we are providing peace of mind to mothers navigating our cities with pride & confidence.
Mapping essential & Safe Places for Mothers
Google Maps creates a safe & inclusive place for mothers. Knowing where a clean feeding room
is located or if a restroom has a diaper-changing
station can change a stressful outing into a pleasant memory. Motherhood is a journey that deserves to be supported by the community, and our contributions act as a “helping hand” for those traveling with little ones
.
We have been inspired by how our community highlights these essential spaces:
-
In @Globe_trotter_Ish’s post, Ways to make Maps Contributions more helpful to Mothers, she shares brilliant tips on how to identify and review spaces for mothers & mother-like figures around us. She emphasizes that our reviews should highlight safety & specific facilities to help others feel prepared before they even leave home.
-
Exploring the Local Mobility Hub at MRT Dukuh Atas BNI, @RivaniRahmadani showcases how modern transit can be truly inclusive. Her post highlights the importance of dedicated “Priority Rooms” and lactation spaces within public transport hubs, making commuting much easier for moms.
-
In @SonamW’s journey on exploring Mattancherry Palace, she reminds us that documenting heritage sites isn’t just about history - it’s about sharing how we experience these places with family. Her insights help us understand how to navigate popular tourist spots with ease and comfort.
-
@HinalLad’s recap of the kid-friendly Bangalore Airport T2
is a masterclass in reviewing transit hubs. She details everything from play areas
to feeding rooms
, proving that a well-designed airport can significantly reduce the “travel fatigue” for mothers flying with children.
Join the Mission: How to Contribute
To celebrate Safe Motherhood Day, I invite you to join me in making our reviews & contributions more detailed. If you are visiting a mall
, an airport
or a public park
, look out for these features that make a huge difference:
-
Feeding Rooms
: Look for “Cozy & Quiet” spaces specifically designed for nursing mothers. -
Diaper Changing Facilities
: Check if they are available, clean & easy to find. -
Women’s Restrooms
: Note the cleanliness, safety & if they include extra space for strollers. -
Parking
: Mention if there is dedicated or accessible parking for women with infants (don’t forget that city malls usually have dedicated parking spaces available).
Pro-tip: When you come across these facilities, take a photo and mention them explicitly in your review. For example: “Great mall for mothers/parents - they have a dedicated feeding room on the 3rd floor and clean diaper changing stations in the restrooms.”
By adding these small details, we help create a world where motherhood is safer & more celebrated.
