Keep Your Account Safe: A Guide to Connect Security Settings

Hey everyone! Welcome to the latest instalment of our community help series, dedicated to helping you navigate Connect like a pro.

I’m Naresh, a Level 10 Local Guide from India, and I’ve been a Connect Moderator since 2021. Finding inspiration through travel, mapping my journeys, and attending Local Guides meet-ups brings me so much joy. With all the amazing interactions happening daily on this platform, keeping your account safe and secure is a top priority. Today, let’s explore how to monitor your active sessions in Community Help Series Post No. 7: Keep Your Account Safe: A Guide to Connect Security Settings.

Did you know that Local Guides Connect has a built-in feature to help you track exactly where and how your account is being accessed? Whether you occasionally log in from a public computer or just want to double-check that your account is secure, the Security tab is your best friend.

Here is a quick guide on how to review and manage your active devices.

How to Access Your Security Settings

  1. Click your Profile Photo in the top right corner.

  2. Select Preferences.

  3. Navigate to the Security tab on the left-hand menu.

Reviewing Recently Used Devices

Once you are in the Security tab, you will see a panel titled Recently Used Devices. This is a comprehensive list of all the devices that have recently logged into your Connect account.

Here is what the system tracks to help you identify your sessions:

  • Device Type: It shows whether the login was from a desktop (e.g., Windows Computer) or a mobile device (e.g., Android Device).

  • Location: It displays the city, state, and country where the device was located during the login (e.g., Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India).

  • Browser: It tells you what web browser was used (like Google Chrome).

  • Activity Status: It shows exactly when that device was last active. Your current session will say “active now” in green text, while older sessions will show how long ago they were used (e.g., “1 hour”).

Taking Action: Managing Your Sessions

If you ever forget to log out of a shared computer, or if you spot a device or location you don’t recognize, you can take immediate action right from this screen.

Next to any inactive device on the list, you will see a small gear icon. Clicking this opens a dropdown menu with two vital options:

  • Log Out: If you recognize the device but just want to end the session remotely, click this. It immediately signs you out on that specific device.

  • Not you?: If you absolutely do not recognize the device or the location, click this option. It will log the device out and prompt you to take further steps to secure your account, such as changing your password.

:light_bulb: Tip: It is a great habit to check this page every few months just to ensure everything looks normal!

We hope you’ve enjoyed this quick introduction! If there’s a specific feature you’d like to explore further, let us know in the comments below, or browse the rest of the topics in this series.
