Master Your Inbox: A Guide to Connect Email Preferences

Hey everyone! Welcome to the latest instalment of our community help series, dedicated to helping you navigate Connect like a pro.

I’m Naresh, a Level 10 Local Guide from India, and I’ve been a Connect Moderator since 2021. Finding inspiration through travel, mapping my journeys, and attending Local Guides meet-ups brings me so much joy. Part of being a great Local Guide is staying connected, but we all know how quickly our email inboxes can fill up! Today, let’s look at how to perfectly tune the emails you receive from the forum in Community Help Series Post No. 6: Master Your Inbox: A Guide to Connect Email Preferences.

Whether you want an email for every single interaction or prefer just a weekly digest of the highlights, Connect gives you total control.

Here is a complete breakdown of how to manage your email settings.

How to Access Your Email Settings

  1. Click your Profile Photo in the top right corner.

  2. Select Preferences.

  3. Navigate to the Emails tab on the left-hand menu.

1. Direct Email Alerts

This section controls when the system actively pushes an email to your inbox based on direct interactions.

  • Email me when I am sent a personal message: You can use the dropdown to choose how you are alerted to DMs. The options are:

    • always: You will get an email immediately.

    • only when away: You will only get an email if you aren’t currently active on the Connect website.

    • never: You will only see your messages when you log in and check your inbox.

  • Email me when I am quoted, replied to, or my @username is mentioned… This covers general interactions and watched categories/tags. Just like the personal messages, you can set this to always, only when away, or never.

2. Email Formatting (How Your Emails Look)

If you do choose to receive emails, you can customize what information is included inside them:

  • Include previous replies at the bottom of emails: This helps provide context to the email alert you just received. You can choose always, unless previously sent, or never. Setting it to “never” keeps your email notifications very short and clean.

  • Include an excerpt of replied to post in emails: Check this box if you want a small preview snippet of the exact text someone replied to, making it much easier to remember the context of the conversation before you even click the link.

3. Activity Summary (Your Catch-Up Digest)

If you prefer not to get pinged for individual actions, the Activity Summary is the perfect feature for you! It sends you a curated digest of popular topics and replies you might have missed.

  • When I don’t visit here, send me an email summary… Check the box to activate this feature, and use the dropdown to select your preferred frequency. Connect offers incredibly flexible options:

    • every 30 minutes

    • hourly

    • daily

    • weekly (A great default for catching up on the weekend!)

    • every month

    • every six months

  • Include content from new users in summary emails: Check this box if you want your digest to highlight introductory posts and questions from the newest members of our community, making it easy to jump in and welcome them.

Remember to click the blue Save Changes button at the bottom right whenever you make adjustments!

We hope you’ve enjoyed this quick introduction! If there’s a specific feature you’d like to explore further, let us know in the comments below, or browse the rest of the topics in this series.
