How Google Maps Helped Me Explore my Passion to the Fullest

As a museum freak, I find myself spending more time in museums than mingling with people.

I can feel that the creators of the artifacts and objects of art and amusement on display at museums are expressing their thoughts to me, and I can connect with them.

As a GenerationX person, I pride having explored various cities in the world without using Google Maps.

:cityscape_at_dusk: In June 2025, I explored New York monuments and attractions without a data pack on my smartphone.

No one would believe I explored New York in 2008 without a cellphone. I talked to people and asked for directions.

Fun Fact: I reached the Google Office by standing in the customer queue in the adjoining Chase Bank and asking the desk clerk for directions.

The employee with a kind smile suggested me to check next door
:statue_of_liberty: New Yorkers are amazing people.

Back to museums, I searched for the top one in Pune - Kelkar Museum.

Many nearby museums popped up on Google Maps… :star_struck:

Viola, that was my Eureka moment…!

And I know this is basic, and I should have known this a long time back.
But that is how I was able to find as many as 52 museums in Pune, just by zooming and panning across the city on Google Maps.

I use a desktop computer with a large monitor and Google Maps in a browser.

With so many museums popping up as suggestions, I felt like a child spoiled for choice.

On my large monitor, I felt like one big eye :eyes: gazing at all those suggestions.

Previously unheard, and unknown, I was so happy to discover so many museums in my city, I was happy as a fat spider :spider:

:clipboard: I immediately saved them all in a neat list of Museums of Pune.

Eventually, I also mapped the museums to the Pune metro so that they can be explored without burning a hole in the pocket.

Thank you, Google Maps :globe_showing_asia_australia: for helping me explore my passion to the fullest and take my experiences with exploring the world around me to the next level.

:one: Do you have any Google Maps experiences and stories to share?

:two: Do you have any tips on discovering museums and monuments on Google Maps?

Challenge.

  1. How many phrases did I use in the post?
  2. Share your Story - How Google Maps helped you when you were new to Google Maps.

That’s absolutely great to know the story of your side @TusharSuradkar Ji. Yes Google Maps has helped me in many ways especially to explore many unique pandals during Durga Puja in Kolkata. There are thousands of pandals in Kolkata and every year some new pandals are adding, Google Maps helped me to find and recognise those beautiful pandals, before Google Maps, it was hard to find the new ones created by absolutely talented people.

Thank you @curatorofmemory
I did that for Delhi as well.
Mapped all Delhi Metro Lines to the museums.

The lists are in this post:
Museum #1 on Delhi Metro Yellow Line: Folk & Tribal Art Museum

Yes, I remember your post about discovering pandals using Google Maps @Shaunak
But aren’t they temporary?

Out here in Pune, the Ganesh pandals have a fixed or predictable location every year, but they exist only for 10-15 days.

Later, they are removed.

Yes @TusharSuradkar the pandals are temporary but their Maps location is permanent which is organised by clubs, also for some clubs, they even organise Kali Puja, Ganesh Puja, etc at the same place so it’s easy to find that using Google Maps.

Thanks for the appreciation @Ssiddharth2000
In Delhi, the list was very effective since we have the Metro in every corner of Delhi.
I am hoping this happens in Pune before very long

@TusharSuradkar . Yes. Of course. Delhi has 100 plus museums. I have been to most of them. Will post on connect in coming days. The BEST museum in India, in my opinion is Bihar museum. If all museums were like that!!!

A great experience @TusharSuradkar ji. Going around in a foreign country without the guidance of Google map. You feel sort of adventurous also. When you finally reach a place where you want you feel a sense of satisfaction. You have added a little bit of humour also saying you stood in the queue of Chase Bank and asking the counter clerk about Google office. Aha aha that is nice. And about your marking the metros with museum it requires lot of passion to create awareness and help people to locate the direction of museums..Great..

Thank you @jagatji ji for reading my experiences carefully - a rare trait on Connect :hugs:

Not using Google Maps or not having a cellphone was a compulsion or helplessness.
Last month, Airtel asked for INR 4000 for a 15-day data pack that I could not afford at all

Also, many many thanks for mentioning patience in creating maps - it is a back-breaking exercise

@TusharSuradkar в моєму місті немає метро. А в подорожах я рідко користуюсь метро, але за гарну пораду дякую)
