What is the Chithirai Festival?
The Chithirai Festival, primarily celebrated in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is a grand annual celebration that usually takes place in April or May. It commemorates the wedding of Goddess Meenakshi (an incarnation of Parvati) to Lord Sundareswarar (Lord Shiva). It’s also known as Meenakshi Thirukalyanam. The festival is a blend of religious events, cultural performances, and vibrant processions, drawing millions of visitors.
Key Events and Significance:
- Meenakshi’s Coronation and Wedding: The first part of the festival focuses on the coronation of Meenakshi as the ruler of Madurai and her wedding with Sundareswarar. This is a reenactment of a celestial wedding.
- Kallazhagar’s Visit: The second part involves the journey of Lord Kallazhagar (a form of Lord Vishnu and considered Meenakshi’s brother) from his temple to Madurai. A significant event is when he enters the Vaigai River.
- Unity of Traditions: The festival beautifully combines Shaiva and Vaishnava traditions, representing the unity of devotees of Shiva and Vishnu.
