The Chithirai Festival’s grand car festival in Madurai is absolutely breathtaking, and I’m so thankful to my fellow Local Guides who joined virtually at such short notice to experience it with me! Imagine, intricately decorated temple chariots, practically towering, being pulled through the bustling city streets – it’s truly a spectacle to behold! This vibrant celebration happening next day of the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar is also known as Therottam, and it’s a major highlight of the two-week-long Chithirai Festival.
The heart of the action is right around the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple and its surrounding Masi streets, which transform into a sea of devotees! Early morning, thousands of us flocked to the Masi streets, eager to catch a glimpse of the majestic procession. One chariot carries Lord Sundareswarar and Goddess Piriyavidai, while another gracefully carries Goddess Meenakshi. It’s an absolutely awe-inspiring sight!
Did you know the first car festival here dates back 700 years to King Veerapandian’s reign? And the current beautiful temple cars were crafted by King Thirumalai Nayakar 380 years ago! Talk about history coming alive! This car festival isn’t just a procession; it’s the grand culmination of the 12-day Chithirai festival, drawing in thousands and thousands of devotees from all corners. It’s an experience that truly connects you to the rich cultural tapestry of Madurai.
