Hy Local Guides,

This week is Inclusion Week & let’s Celebrate with Local Guides by reflecting on how we make our communities more accessible. Inclusion is not just a single feature we mark on a map; it is the feeling of entering a space, physical or virtual - knowing you are valued, respected & safe. As Local Guides, our contributions have the power to dismantle barriers and help people navigate the world with confidence and dignity.

When we celebrated Inclusion Week last year, we looked at how individual contributions create collective impact. That journey continually brings us back to an essential, reflective question: What does inclusive mean to you as a Local Guide?

What does inclusion mean to you as a local guide?

Inclusivity touches every discussions of our daily journeys, identities & shared spaces:

• Physical Accessibility : Documenting wheelchair-accessible ramps, level entrances, wide doorways or tactile paving ensures people using mobility aids or transit systems move smoothly and independently. Check out how @Katarina_Cibikova explores unique barrier-free architecture in accessible spots.

• Safe & Dignified Facilities : Spotlighting gender-neutral bathrooms creates safer, affirming spaces for individuals and families. Equally vital is documenting spaces for parents, beautifully highlighted by @Supriyadevkar in her post on why a feeding room is a small space serving a big need.

• Welcoming Every Identity & Safe Spaces : Highlighting LGBTQ+ friendly businesses and participating in Pride with Local Guides helps everyone celebrate authenticity. Inclusion also means building peace of mind for women and families in public life, as captured by @Sadaf_Younus in creating a safe space for the community.

• Pet-Friendly Environments : Inclusion extends to our four-legged companions and service animals - explore these comforting vibes shared by @doc_dells through pet-friendly spaces.

• Shared Milestones : Coming together to celebrate international observances unites our global community, just like @AkterAshik’s inspiring recap on celebrating days with Local Guides.

How to Champion Inclusion on Connect?

Inclusion starts right here within our community forum. Simple everyday actions foster an open, supportive environment:

• Respect and Share Pronouns : Add your pronouns to your Connect bio or signature & honour the chosen pronouns of local guides to cultivate an identity-affirming space.

• Follow Community Guidelines : Adhere to the Local Guides Community Guidelines by keeping discussions constructive, empathetic, welcoming & free from discrimination.

• Add captions to media : Provide descriptions and captions so local guides using screen readers can experience your stories, meetups & media effortlessly.

• Organize & Attend Inclusive Meetups : Plan meetups at step-free, transit-accessible locations, host virtual or hybrid sessions for remote users & warmly welcome attendees.

I’m not sure if my answer really fits your question, but I think inclusion can also mean making visitors feel welcome in a new place.

When someone I don’t know, usually a tourist, asks me for directions, I try to explain the way as clearly as I can. If I have time, I’ll even walk with them and show them the way.

I know how confusing it can be to be somewhere you don’t know, so I think a little help can make a big difference. A Local Guide can help people not only through Google Maps, but in real life too.

Inclusion is truly about creating a sense of belonging, and taking the time to guide someone lost in an unfamiliar place is one of the kindest forms of hospitality . It is a wonderful reminder that our role as Local Guides extends beyond the map & into the real world . That extra step you take to walk with them makes a lasting difference .
