5 ways to support sustainability on Google Maps

Taking care of Mother Earth is more important than ever. The UN Development Programme cites a staggering statistic that up to 13 million tons of plastic are leaked into the ocean annually (that’s about one garbage truck into the ocean every minute!). This Earth Day, we’ve rounded up a few easy ways to make a difference for the environment as a Local Guide. Read on and let us know in the comments which of these you’re already doing.

1. Update recycling attributes

Does your local supermarket recycle plastic bottles? Or does your neighborhood electronics store collect used batteries? In a few easy steps, you can support the businesses that do their part and help people in your community discover more places that accept recyclables:

  1. Find a Business Profile on Google Maps mobile.
  2. Select About in the tabs bar, then tap Edit features (for Android) or Update this place (for iOS).
  3. Scroll to Recycling, tap on descriptions, and submit.

Fun fact: According to Google Trends, the top 5 most searched “…recycling near me” terms for 2021 in the U.S. were metal, electronic, cardboard, battery, and cans!

2. Add sustainability details to your reviews

Local Guide Rebeca is a biologist who believes it’s her job to make the world a better place. One way she does this is through her reviews on Google Maps. She often shares helpful details, like if a place offers disposable cutlery or collects waste separately.

3. Map recycling centers and drop-off locations

Wondering where to start? Check out Cecilia’s post on recycling categories on Google Maps and join Ermes’s challenge to add recycling drop-off centers to the map. For more on the topic, explore the #LetsRecycle community initiative on Connect.

4. Create dedicated lists

These could be of places that accept a specific type of recyclables or electric vehicle charging stations. Two great examples are Sebastián’s Google Maps list of containers for batteries, textiles, and more in Argentina and Hiroyuki’s list of charging stations in Japan.

5. Share photos of green options

A true hometown hero, Alexander was the first to add photos to this glass recycling center and this charging station in Kansas City, Missouri, making it easy for others to find them.

While these are just a few of the ways you can make a difference on Google Maps, the change toward a more sustainable future starts at home. Looking for ideas? Here are some from incredible Local Guides who are passionate about sustainability:

You can even take it one step further. Get your community involved and organize a cleaning meet-up inspired by Ermes’s global Local Guides Clean the World campaign (which recently celebrated its fourth anniversary!).

Have you used the recycling attributes on Google Maps? How do you support sustainability? Let us know below.

It’s really helpful that we can easily doing some contributions to make our Earth more sustainable by updating on Google Maps.

Hi @TiffanyBnyc

Thank you so much for sharing some great tips to keep our Planet sustainability.

Very important update @TiffanyBnyc

I came across couple of plastic recycling shops with local administration and found the information very useful. It would be good to update it on maps as well.

Many thanks for the post :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @TiffanyBnyc

Thanks for the update in this post and happy earth’s day.

Yes! We got this information in our monthly local guide Email as well and I’ve used it to update a few places already. Though in our country or most part of West Africa recycling is quite scarce. Nevertheless we need to protect the earth in every way we can.

Cheers

I love to dwell in forest wild,

Where giant pine trees pierce the sky;

A beauty spot where Nature smiled,

A fitting place to live and die.

Thanks for your very useful article on “Recycling” - thanks dear fellow LG @TiffanyBnyc - I too strongly believe in importance of Recycling.

Hello friend @Smita_Patil & @StephenAbraham … could you find the options to add the recycling options in your device? I’m not getting or I’m looking at wrong place? (or not yet introduced in India?)

Kindly help me.

I would like to have the option to add info about a single business sustainability profile.
Like the use of solar energy, electric vehicle, or other environmental prof activities or policies.
This would help differentiate proactive activities

I so agree with you @TiffanyBnyc that taking care of Mother Earth is now more important than ever and one garbage truck into the ocean every minute is shameful! Thank you for pointing out some easy ways that we Local Guides can make a difference.

I would love to mention a service that we have used many times. Our local ALDI supermarket stores recycle batteries. We just take them in and drop into a special bin at the front of the store. I will now use the Edit features add this information to these stores.

Thanks for the tips @TiffanyBnyc , I’ll update recycling attributes of places where I’ve seen recycling containers, because of the pandemic a lot of places removed those containers so, it’s time to keep information updated!

Adding photos of them is also helpful and writing about them in our reviews, this photo shows a container in a clothing store, you can leave clothes that you no longer use (and are in good conditions) and they will donate them to a cancer treatment center. Here is the review I wrote

There a re a lot of actions we can do as Local Guides, I will create a List of that collect bottles or batteries in my city!

Happy Earth Day! :earth_americas: :recycle:

Saya sangat prihatin dengàn adanya sampah. Tapi karena kebutuhàn tempat makan . . Minum .
