Algorithm to prevent Duplicate Photo/Video Uploads

images.jpg

Wouldn't it be nice to have an automated algorithm to check for possible duplicate photos/video also copyrighted material before posting to Google Maps?

Here are some of the possible scenarios how duplicates happen and you get your profiles tagged for it.

Possible Scenarios (Photo/Video Uploads)

  • Same photos synced to multiple devices and then synced to the same location tagged on Google Maps
  • Poor/bad internet connection where device tries several times to upload the same photo/video which sometimes results in duplication
  • Delayed Uploads- Sometimes, we local guides go through pictures in our galleries and completely forget whether we uploaded it for the places on Google Maps or not, thus, a second try results in duplicates
  • Sometimes malicious uploaders try to upload the same photo to different places on Google Maps to gain multiple points. That way the resources reflected on Google Maps are far from reality but the Local guides gets their points
  • Multiple profiles of the same local guide, trying to upload the same resources using different accounts
  • Sometimes local guides post pictures/videos on Google maps taken from Internet and other resources that are not their own, thus resulting in duplicates and copyrighted media upload.

Solution: In computer science a very simple technique called Hashing can solve this problem. Check hash of every content before uploading to maps thus dropping duplicate uploads.

Hai Hai i'm reza from indonesia. I'm newbie here, just from four days ago. I think maps application have to make a filter for pictures that local guide share or upload on google maps. Why i have to said that? Because, i found 2 case when i was uploding pictures in local guide program. The first one, when i was uploding the same pictures that i send to google maps before, it literarry working. And i have a new point with same picture that i was uploding in diferent time. Excample, i have one picture and then i upload for now, and i have 5 point for 1 picture. After that, the same picture i uploding tomorrow, then i have 5 addition point. The second one, when i have a blur pict then i upload in local guide program, that pict can be approve by system, even that picture not clear or too dark.

Hi @rezulfah,

We'll need more information to better understand your idea. Please explain your idea as detailed as possible.

If I understand correctly you're proposing for a filter to be implemented when uploading photos to Google Maps. Is this filter supposed to catch duplicate photos uploaded be users, or what would be its main purpose?

I would love for the Google Maps to come up with a way of Team enabling the Map to identify and prompt you to delete duplicate photos, it is hard sometimes to know if you are adding duplicate photos on the Map. This will prevent people from spamming the Maps.

Hi @WaweruM

I was just coming to write a post about this subject. As your post is already present, I will add my notes in here:

- Duplicate photo on the same POI (sometime unwanted) - should be detected automatically checking Place+profile, informing the LG that the photo is already there

- Same photo on different POIs (sometime unwanted) - should be detected automatically checking the Profile, informing the LG that the photo has been already uploaded (maybe with a question like "want to keep the photo un this POI?" If the answer is Yes, the photo should be removed from the other POI)

- Selfies, or visible faces - should be detected automatically by the AI, and give a link to the program rules about contents. Google Photo is perfectly able to do that, so why not to use it?

- Photos of wrong places - frequently uploaded by tourists that drop the photos on the first POI suggested by the AI based on Location. AI should be able to detect the wrong POI, based on the information we already have (like AR). In any case, I think a LG should be able to suggest the correct Location: Flagging the correct POI for Photos of wrong POI
