Where to eat traditional Polish food in Kraków

Before a single detail of my wedding was planned, my husband and I already knew that our honeymoon would be in the South of France. The only problem was the venue we picked was only available in late October. So, that meant the dream honeymoon would have to wait until the following summer. We still wanted to treat ourselves to a vacation immediately after the wedding, though, and that’s how we wound up in Kraków, Poland in November.

We had a wonderful time touring museums, learning more about the city’s history, and walking for miles. Unfortunately, because it was November, it was pretty cold out, but that just meant we had to make many stops to warm up in restaurants and add extra padding by eating as many pierogies as we could handle.

From the many spots we tried, here are my favorites for traditional Polish food in Kraków that also come highly recommended by your fellow Local Guides.

  1. Starka Restaurant

“Cute little restaurant tucked away in one of the little streets. We randomly went in here as we wanted a spot of lunch on our travels. Definitely a place to experience traditional Polish food and drinks. The menu is lovely with plenty to choose from and the food itself is stunning! The staff were nice and welcoming and spoke good English but they also helped you if you wanted to have a go in polish. Highly recommended!” -Local Guide Hayley Campbell

  1. Restauracja Pod Baranem

“Love this restaurant. Always make time to stop here as it’s just a lovely place to have dinner. Friendly staff, interesting decor and good food! So good. Lots of places to go in Krakow but always find my way back here. It’s a great place to relax with friends. Try it!” -Local Guide gravity Williams

  1. Pirozki U Vicenta

“Top-notch pierogis! Had a plate of mixed variations, and each was delicious and well seasoned. It is a small place so you might have to wait for a table, but I highly recommend to do so.” -Local Guide Thomas Nyström

  1. Szara Kazimierz

“Excellent food, superb service and beautiful location! Our waitress was very attentive and didn’t hover over us when we ate! Prices can seem a little bit steep, but when you see what you are served, you understand the price is absolutely correct. It’s recommended in the Michelin guide and with good reason! Next time I’m going to Krakow, I’m eating here again!” -Local Guide Stine Solhaug

Have you ever been Kraków? What was your favorite thing you ate there?

Hey @kmajewski ,

Thank you for sharing your experience in Krakow. I am glad that you and your husband had a wonderful time and tried all these delicious looking meals.

I haven’t been there but I visited Warsaw last autumn and I was able to try some traditional Polish dishes like pierogi and chlodnik - a cold Polish beetroot soup. I also tried Japanese, Vietnamese, Italian and Thai food and I didn’t have any bad experience when it comes to taste, service or plating. I could easily say that Polish people love their food and know how to prepare it.

On the last day of our trip we had a nice brunch at AïOLI Bread&Aperitivo where the food was amazing. I will share two mouth-watering photos from that place.

Krakow is my city. My family is originally from a smaller town not far away, but this is where I set up when I visit. The very first place I visit is the restaurant inside Hotel Wyspiański (Westerplatte). I order the mushroom soup, and the potato pancakes with goulash. Wash it down with a Zywiec beer and I come back to my full Polish self!

Hey @MagdaLasVegas ,

Great to hear about your favourite place in Krakow! Do you happen to have any photos from there?

You could also add a Google Maps URL of the restaurant. It would be nice for other Local Guides to see what it can offer and how to find it.

And last but not least, if you want to tag Local Guides, please write @ before their names so that they are notified of your comment.

Hey @kmajewski

We were there a couple of months before you, for the European Meet-up in Krakow, with a lot of fun

We enjoyed some restaurant too, @TorM guided us in some traditional place:

Bombonierka is one of this

Morskie Oko is a very traditional place. We had a lot of fun in there, even if I have to highlight the fact that is not suitable for people with a wheelchair

Hi @MagdaLasVegas , I am so sorry we didn’t met you :frowning:

WOW @kmajewski ,

what should I say… The posts about Krakow are always the best!

Fantastic post. In fact I really like the polish kitchen, but as well the strongly developing craft beer community in Krakow. We have been there last weekend for a meet up. Next time in Krakow you could visit some of this places if you like, but maybe not for honeymoon  https://goo.gl/maps/gGvy3kqBNLF2

I hope you was lucky to find the romantic hot spots of Cracow. Also when the climate is there somehow cold, there are many warm places. But as I have been married there, I spend my honeymoon somewhere else. In fact in POLAND, because Poland is fantastic for honeymoon, BUT we like you went as well to a beautiful country later for a second honeymoon and this was of course the homecountry of @ErmesT … ITALY. (Thank you for taging me ermest. Fantastic post.)

Did you know that in Cracow you also can find a big community of VEGAN and VEGETARIAN Food, what does supprise me, as in Poland you have a quite nice “Meat eating” culture.

Wonderful post @kmajewski

The dishes looks so delicious and the photo are very good quality.

In September I visit Krakow,it was Europian meet up.I liked polish dishes ,especially ZUREK

soup on a bread sourdough, with potatoes, sausage or egg, sometimes served this soup in a bread loaf, which makes it attractive and especially delicious.

I also tasted Bigos - on the basis of cabbage with the addition of vegetables used mushrooms, pieces of sausage or smoked meat. This traditional Polish dish is quite tasty and hearty.oup in a bread loaf, which makes it attractive and especially delicious.

I wrote two posts about dishes.in September 2018.Sorry,if they are not so good.

Hi @helga19 ,

Thanks for sharing your photo. I had the chance to try zurek in September when I attended a Polish wedding and they served this delicious soup at one point in the evening and for breakfast in the morning. I believe it is supposed to keep you sober for longer.

There were also beef stroganoff soup and salmon tartar but my favourite Polish dish remains chlodnik.
