The Zero Stone in Pune - A Historic Landmark

The Zero Stone in Pune is a historic landmark.
It reflects the rich history of Pune and carries a significant legacy.

The Zero Stone monument is on the sidewalk footpath just outside the General Post Office in Pune.

This historical spot is perfect for both locals and tourists. I was there after Durga’s meetup in Pune on 24 November 2024.

We had a heavy brunch at Cream Cravers so decided to take a stroll to this historic landmark that was barely 500 meters away from the food joint.

It is also known as the Zero Milestone and it is here that the city’s distances were originally measured from.

If you ever wonder where all those milestone numbers appear along the roadside, they all start from this place in Pune.

The immense work done by the surveyors deserves appreciation. Almost none of us know about the great work done by these people.

So, plaques are erected near the Zero Stone with their embossed faces and information carved in granite slabs.

The aura of that place amidst the huge banyan trees enhanced the character of the space around the Zero Stone making it a must-visit place when in Pune :+1:

Before Google Maps,

this symbol was used for drivers on highways to indicate the kilometer milestone.

@TusharSuradkar es genial saber que cada ciudad tiene su punto cero, yo también estuve buscando y lo encontré.
Lo cual hice un post en su momento.

Thanks for this insightful look into the center of Pune, @TusharSuradkar ! I can appreciate the history and significance of their work!

This reminds me of Florida’s interesting, yet whimsical, version similar option of a geographical indicator: Southernmost Point of the Continental U.S.A..

This landmark stone is very nicely maintained too. @TusharSuradkar .
Additional information around it is also important to see; I never thought in depth about it.

Cheers!

Thank you, dear @ShailendraOjha Bhai
Yes, good observation :+1: These milestones were the best help to know how far the city is from our location on the road. But slowly they are disappearing.

Yes, I have heard about this place and seen several videos @SP31
We too have such points in India.
I was fortunate to visit the southernmost point in India called ‘Kanyakumari’ last year.

Yes, this was in the news for many days and I passed very close to this place on my way to office and back, but never got a chance to stop by and see it @AjitThite

The Sunday meetup was a nice opportunity.
May be we can go here again during the upcoming heritage food walk in the Camp area.

Rightly said @Ankan_S and I completely agree :handshake:
Now with the advent of Google Maps, people rarely notice such marvels out to their vehicles’s windows.

So einen Nullpunkt kenne ich in Deutschland nicht @TusharSuradkar
An der Seite von Autobahnen und Bundesstraßen, also alle großen Straßen, haben aber Meilensteine womit man die Position benennen kann.
