Recap: [In-Person] Cambodia, August 10, Cambodia Mega Edit – Map Data Problem Marathon (Phase II)

After our powerful start in Phase I on August 03, the Cambodia Local Guides community Recap: [In-Person] Cambodia, August 03, Cambodia Google Maps Mega Edit Marathon: Fix the Map, Help the Community . We came back together for Phase II — focused on reviewing, verifying, and documenting problematic Google Maps data in Cambodia. This was not a regular editing session; our mission was to collect hard evidence, track data issues, and prepare reports for Google and relevant authorities.

Location

Main Activities

  1. Review & follow-up from Phase I
  • Shared last week’s report and data findings, with a demo by @viasnaphon and @mosesngeth on how we track and collate problematic locations.

  1. Sharing experience on mapping for new participants
  • @SophatCHY shared step-by-step instructions for adding missing places and editing location details on Google Maps.

  1. Data collection & verification
  • Worked on 308 problematic locations found during this session. We will provide data to the Connect Moderator @Sophia_Cambodia, working with Googler
  • Determined “Active” (still visible and incorrect on the map) vs. “Not Active” (fixed or removed). Some locations still duplicate the work we’re cleaning up.

Results – Week’s Data

Date Active Issues % Active Not Active Issues % Not Active Total Issues Found
10 Aug 2025 117 37.99% 191 62.01% 308
3 Aug 2025 86 24.23% 269 75.77% 355
Total 203 460 663
  • Active = Still incorrect or fake and visible on Google Maps.
  • Not Active = Already removed, fixed, or hidden from public view.

This week saw more active issues compared to last week, meaning we are detecting more current map problems that need immediate attention.

Why This Matters

These sessions are uncovering a high number of fake, misleading, and harmful map entries. Many are spam businesses, non-existent places, or locations with hate speech and disinformation. Detecting and reporting these problems is critical for protecting communities, businesses, and Cambodia’s digital trust.

Next Steps

  • Escalate 117 active cases to Google for review. We are working with Connect Moderator to send all cases to Google for review
  • Continue monitoring high-risk categories like border areas, sensitive landmarks, and fake business networks.
  • Plan Phase III with expanded volunteer participation and a focus on collecting more data.

Thank you to everyone who joined, stayed focused, and contributed to improving Cambodia’s map data quality. Together, we’re making Google Maps more accurate, safer, and more reliable for everyone.

Thanks to everyone who joined and kept the momentum going!
Special thanks to #Sophat, who always drives this forward for our meetings, and to all members who helped organize — especially those who joined in person and those who motivated us even without physically joining.

Participants:
Sophat CHY • Makara YEM • Seng Pheng • Rithyvong EM • Viasna Phon • Brosethy Son • Sokha Cheam • Tuy Engly (Sakura) • Ham Soalroo • JvanSd • JetlyChan • Moses NGETH • Pich Viras • Kem Savanna

Together, we’re making Cambodia’s map cleaner, more accurate, and more reliable. Let’s aim even higher next time! :rocket:

:warning: After-Meet Findings – Possible Hate Speech & Harassment
During our review, we identified several terms that could be linked to hate speech or harassment. Based on Thai-language usage, here are some key keywords to watch for — big applause  to Nget Moses for being especially helpful on this:

Hatred
Hate speech
Harassment
Defamation
Violent expression
Insult
Violation
Discriminatory words
Attacking
Inciting hatred

These keywords can help us spot and address harmful or offensive content when reviewing newly created locations or user-generated entries, ensuring our maps remain respectful, accurate, and safe.

We also don’t forget Sopheap, who is always lending a helping hand to us as a Cambodian local resident, contributing accurate and valuable work to our mapping efforts.

Additionally, we discovered another sensitive issue affecting our Cambodia national map — an inaccurate and potentially harmful entry. We will investigate this further and raise it to Google so it can be fixed for a more accurate national map by Region.

@ViasnaPhon, only a Connect Moderator can merge a post. @TusharSuradkar, @Sophia_Cambodia, and @NareshDarji can help to integrate into my recap Recap: [In-Person] Cambodia, August 10, Cambodia Mega Edit – Map Data Problem Marathon (Phase II)

Thank you so much, @JanVanHaver!
I’m happy to take action and keep building this community. It’s my mission to let more people know about Google Maps and the Local Guides program.
After this meetup, we collected a lot of valuable data, but it’s not public yet. If you have any suggestions, especially after seeing what @ViasnaPhon shared, that would be great. Your input is always valuable to us.

Thank you, I keep working on this community @AbhijeetUniyal

What @ViasnaPhon wrote about all those insulting/harmful entries was striking to me too. Are there any clues (photos, reviews, or likes on those) that could hint you about who posted those things? If you can manage to figure out the profile(s) of the (ab)user(s) we could definitely report them (moderators even have a special section here on Connect to report those).

Or can you figure out certain common features / patterns in those entries?

We are working with @Sophia_Cambodia on this project as well, and we’re currently cleaning and collecting more data. That’s one of the reasons I organized those meet-ups. @ViasnaPhon and more also actively involved in our team, and I really appreciate your support in this effort.

On this case, I will keep you updated. I think we’ll also need to involve Googlers because we’ve already found a lot of concerning entries that require higher-level action.

Have you ever considered getting in touch with the media? My experience is that most journalists have no clue about the local guides program but find it very newsworthy when they find about it (especially at the scale of the spamfighting team currently working in Cambodia)
