How to discover and find your local Businesses is LGBTQ+ 🏳️‍🌈 Friendly - Pride with Local Guides! ✨

Hy Local Guides, :rainbow_flag:

June is just 3 days to come and Pride month is around the corner. We as a Local Guides knows how to find LGBTQ+ :rainbow_flag: friendly businesses on Google Maps - either by searching LGBTQ+ Friendly “category of businesses” near me phrase in search bar or looking in the business’s About section for features being enabled by the businesses.

But how can we know a Coffee Shop we visited is LGBTQ+ :rainbow_flag: Friendly if they didn’t enabled the feature in their profile?

See how @Kumaarsantosh has reviewed a boutique, even though the business did not enable the feature and is LGBTQ+ Friendly.

Including LGBTQ+ :rainbow_flag: friendly keywords are also important when searching in Google Maps for LGBTQ+ friendly businesses, as results also contain businesses that are reviewed by the keywords.

You can also share information on how to enable LGBTQ+ Friendly features to Local Businesses!

Let’s go through some methods I follow to ensure businesses I visit is LGBTQ+ Friendly or not, so that I can add it to my review.

  1. Asking the staff or authority - One of Best practices to confirm your local businesses is LGBTQ+ friendly or not.

  2. Gender Neutral bathrooms (GNB):restroom: - if a business provides a bathroom commonly for all genders and not as different, it is said to be Gender Neutral bathrooms. There’s no requirement of putting a Gender Neutral bathroom sign by a business to call it a GNB. One of the easy methods to find a business is LGBTQ+ Friendly is to find GNB. Note : some businesses provide bathrooms for each gender with availability of GNB.

  3. LGBTQ+ Sign board or posters or Art :rainbow_flag: - some businesses have signs boards or posters or Art on their walls to welcome all customers inclusively.

  4. LGBTQ+ related Menu :fish_cake_with_swirl: /books :books: /games :video_game: - some cafes/coffee shops/community centres have menus, books & games that are related to LGBTQ+ and inclusivity.

  5. Word of Mouth or through Connect :speaking_head: : you can also find local LGBTQ+ friendly businesses by word of mouth from other local guides or through posts & meetup recaps.

It’s always good practice to contribute for Accessibility with LGBTQ+ Friendly to make Google Maps more inclusive.

This series will be helpful for upcoming challenges - “Support local LGBTQ+ Friendly Businesses on Google Maps” starting from June.
