Once again, some new categories have been added to the list of about 4000 categories that local guides can use to classify the points of interest they come across or add on Google Maps. Similar to what we have seen before, a number of new restaurants types are added and also some additional car dealers. And there are a few interesting other ones.
When it comes to the restaurants, it seems that the Googlers in charge of the category list have been enjoying quite a bit of German cuisine lately, as all new categories here seem to refer to regions in Germany:
Baden restaurant
Bavarian restaurant
Franconian restaurant
Palatine restaurant
Swabian restaurant
Thuringian restaurant
The only one Iâm not really sure about the exact meaning is Baden restaurant. Perhaps @TorM or @LudwigGermany can help me out with that? Would that be restaurants with specialties from the Baden-Baden region?
The list of car brands that have their dedicated category for dealerships now also contains 3 new ones:
Daihatsu dealer
DS Automobiles dealer
Lancia dealer
And then there are 3 more from other areas of life:
Countertop contractor
Dental implants provider
Recycling drop-off location
Especially that last one, Recycling drop-off location, is a very interesting new one as in the domain of waste management and recycling there is still work to be done (both when it comes to the categories on Maps and also in terms of the actual work of waste management and recycling - just check the Local Guides Clean The World project initiated by @ErmesT ).The usual difficulty, of course, is the correct interpretation of the various related categories. There already was Recycling center as category, so in which cases should that still be used and in which cases the new Recycling drop-off location? I have an interpretation for that myself, but I am intentionally not mentioning it here yet, as I hope to collect your comments, dear fellow local guide, in order to collect input for an upcoming post in the Categories Explained (?) series. So please let me know how you think these categories can best be used in your country/region. One thing I am pretty sure about, though: it is not meant as an incentive to add any single trashcan you come across as point of interest on Maps (trashcans are an element of the environment, not a destination as such - which I consider to be one of the main criteria in deciding whether or not something is mapable).
Should (some of) these new categories not yet be available in your local language, please be patient as the new categories tend to be made available in the other languages, but sometimes only after a while. And just for the sake of being complete: compared to the previous time I checked, no categories seem to have been removed.
Interested in other new categories? Make sure to check out the overview post.
In my hometown, there are places that we can drop off our recycling stuffs. If the things is quite good and still can be sold, here are some stores for second hand stuffs. But if the recycling stuffs has been useless, we can categorize it and drop off in that kind of places. The category including papers, iron, glass, etcâŠetcâŠ
This post is very interesting! I like a lot the Recycling drop-off location new category! I tried it and it is in the Spanish version. It is called âPunto de RecolecciĂłn de Reciclablesâ. I tried in a place near my home! I know several recycling drop-off locations in my city that are now in the map as âRecycling Centerâ, so I am going to change them all with the correct category.
The difference between âRecycling Centerâ and âRecycling Drop-off locationâ is that the first one is a place where process the Reciclables and the second one is a place where common people bring their Reciclables.
Thanks @Marianis for sharing some info about your local situation. Once I have collected info from various people I will get back to it in more detail.
@JanVanHaver thanks for sharing good news. In Bangladesh some popular food dish need to add in google map category list like âFushkaâ âLachhiâ etc. Hopefully Google team should concern about Bengali language food dish & others.
Thanks for the update, @JanVanHaver , great information!
Although, I am not really convinced about the German subcategories.
If I would go to a German restaurant, I would probably just select âGerman restaurantâ.
Are these new categories sub-subcategories to specify a German restaurant even more? What I would think is that only a very small minority of the users would actually know/care about this specification. Honestly, I would even be confused when I would see a Palatine or Swabian restaurant.
So would the hierarchy be like this?
Restaurant > German restaurant > Baden/Bavarian/Franconian/Palatine/Swabian/Thuringian restaurant ?
Hello @JanVanHaver thank you for this informative update on categories. The Recycling drop-off location will indeed be the most useful one of them all and I will go and check some of the known places to me. I already seen one that is/was not on the map.
I have also started to listen your excellent LetsGuide Podcasts | #LGCTM my compliments I think you did a great job.
Wonderful @JanVanHaver , you are a real Maps edit rockstar .
Indeed very detailing and more wide choice of categories. Good point about when to use one compared to another one, sometimes it might be confusing or doubting which one to choice.
@MehadeHasan do you mean specific restaurant categories not based on the region (or the regional specialties) but rather on a specific dish? Do you have restaurants there that serve just 1 type of dish (perhaps in some variations)? Or is it then something like âpizzeriaâ, where you mainly have pizzaâs but also a few other dishes?
Indeed @LudwigGermany I had Googled (what else? ) the term myself already and had not found specific specialties that would be known in other regions/countries. Perhaps it refers to something completely different in a completely different part of the world?
Youâre right @Stphn there is indeed also a more âgeneralâ category âGerman restaurantâ so it is quite confusing/challenging to use these categories correctly (whatever that might mean )
